Author: debraanderson15 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.wells/5154.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hi Orin. Yes, I am familiar with DNA testing and anxious to find a representative for my Wells line. I have about 11 on going projects to date, and, if used correctly, they are an important tool in my research. I also understand, from experience, that it is important to make sure that a representative is a "documented" representative of a family. Just had a 'long time' (understood no questions asked) assumed member of my extended Evans family take a DNA test. Not a match, at least not a match within 400 years or more. So we took another look at his 'genealogy'. The 'genealogy' was wrong two generations back (the early 1900's)! Think of it.... he put in years of research on the wrong family because he made a guess as to who his grandfather was when he first started this over 30 years ago. >>We have tested on descendant of this family through William Wells Jr. in our Wells DNA project I disagree. Please tell me why you state this. Please ask Robert why he states this. Just one piece of documentation; any record at all that ties his group to Wm Wells d.1833 would be very much appreciated. >>namely Ransom, John, George Thomas, Robert, Henry or Jesse -Ransom is my ancestor. He is a documented son of Wm Wells d.1833. He had one son; only two grandsons. Still looking for a male descendant. My Gus Wells was one of his g.sons. Gus had a couple of sons, but they "go missing" in OK/TX (state line area). Hoping the release of the 1940 census helps. Oklahoma records tough. -Wm Wells d.1833 had a son Jack. Always referred to as either Jack or Jacky (in the records = beginning when he was age about 16). Never listed as John that I know of. (I know that Jack is sometimes another given name for John, like Polly is for Mary) Also noting that Jack Wells (s/o Wm d.1833) should not be confused with the John Wells of Giles who was f/o Levis S. The records make this very clear. -George is not the same as Thomas. They were two different men. Have no idea what became of George. He goes missing late 1840's. Thomas (s/o Wm d.1833) may be the Thomas who marr to Frannie Yancy Graves... still working on that puzzle. The records located to date all fit (so far), and it really helps that Wm Wells had something to do with the John Graves Estate, but want more to prove that this is the Thomas that I am looking for. -Robert (s/o Wm d.1833) was the only Robert in Giles during this time period of a certain age. There was a Robert in Maury (s/o David), but he is accounted for and living in Maury, and not (really) of an age to be Administrator of an Estate in 1825. I have quite a bit on this Robert s/o David. David Wells of Maury is ancestor of my dau-in-law, and the Wells DNA participant of this line is a first cousin of her mother. -Not sure Henry was a son of Wm Wells d.1843, and not sure why you list him. No record of a Henry Wells. A Henry was referred to as "brother Henry" in a family letter. But that does not mean that he was Henry Wells, or a s/o Wm Wells. He could have been a brother-in-law. If Henry was a son of Wm Wells d.1833, he is not in Giles TN. &, also noting that Wm H Wells could have been referred to as 'Henry' ( his middle name was Henry and a name the family used). -Jesse had two sons. Neither had issue. >>We need to find a descendent of one of the other sons of William Wells Yes. On another note, I also believe that you have a documented descendant of David Wells of Maury CO TN. & Wishing we could prove who the David (d.1843 Maury TN) was the son of. We know who his 2nd wife was...... but only a best guess as to who his first wife was. I thought it interesting that the two Wells families of = the earlier group in NC and my elder Wm Wells d.1833 Giles were all from the same area (county) of VA during the same time period; one group migrating on to NC, and the other to Giles TN. Perhaps only a coincidence, so many Wells about, but it makes it more 'convenient' when pulling those VA records! Hope all is well with you, & thanks for your response. Always good to hear your input. Debra Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: ORWells Surnames: Wells, Westmoreland Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.wells/5154.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Debra, I do not know for sure what Prudence's maiden name was but one researcher claimed (no documentation offered) it was Westmoreland. We have tested on descendant of this family through William Wells Jr. in our Wells DNA project. Unfortunately, he did not match any of the other Wells we have tested. We do not know if this is because this is a unique Wells family we just haven't seen before or since or if something happened down the branch tested. We need to find a descendent of one of the other sons of William Wells & Sarah Westmoreland - namely Ransom, John, George Thomas, Robert, Henry or Jesse. The descendent has to be a male who still carries the Wells surname. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: debraanderson15 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.wells/5154/mb.ashx Message Board Post: William Wells, Revolutionary War Pensioner, was b.1753 Prince George CO VA d.1833 Giles CO TN. He marr Sarah Westmoreland Nov 1785 in Brunswick CO VA (Bath parish). He is found listed on the Dinwiddie CO VA Personal Tax Lists for several years next to the Westmoreland (alpha list but he was next to Thomas several years and consistently listed next to/near the Westmoreland brothers-in-law on these lists). These Dinwiddie tax lists prove two of his sons coming of tithable age 16 (Jack & Ransom). This 'group' removed to TN on/about 1807, first to Davidson CO, then a couple of years later in Giles CO, TN. There are many records in Giles that prove the various families including the Wells and Westmoreland connections. There were several Wm 'H' Wells in Giles CO TN, and a real puzzle to understand who belonged to which family. -One of the Wm H Wells born 1823 was s/o Ransom Wells (Ransom was s/o Rev War soldier Wm Wells b.1753 d.1833 in Giles). This Wm H b.1823 marr. 1st Amanda'Marcella' Harwell, & marr 2nd Martha McCormack. This Wm H Wells b.1823 named his 1st son (by his first wife) Wm H. Rees Wells; This Wm H Rees Wells (s/o Wm H. b.1823) was born 1846 and most often referred to as Wm H Wells. -One Wm H Wells was b.1827 and the s/o Peyton Wells of Lincoln CO TN. This Wm H Wells b.1827 marr to Ursula Nave and lived in Giles CO whilst most of his siblings (not all siblings) lived in adjacent Lincoln CO. Many have confused the Wm H Wells b.1823 with the Wm H Wells b.1827, but the records, and there are many, prove which one "belongs where". It is believed that the elder Wm Wells b.1753 d.1833 in Giles CO TN had a son William. But what became of him? I believe that he died 1825 in Giles CO TN; that his brother Robert (this Rbt. a known son of Wm Wells b.1753 d.1833) was appointed Administrator of his Estate, and Prudence was his relict. It should be noted that there is another record in early Giles CO that ties this Wm H Wells to Thomas Wells, yet another known s/o Wm Wells b.1753 d.1833. NOTE: 2 Mar 1825 Ordered that letters of administration on the Estate of William H Wells decd. be granted to Prudence W Wells and Robert Wells, whereupon they were qualified & gave bond & security as the law directs. & next record The administrators of the Estate of William H Wells deceased returned an Inventory of sd estate which is ordered to be recorded. & next record Ordered that an order of sale issue to the administrators of the Estate of William H Wells decd. commanding them to Expose to sale the property contained in the Inventory of sd. Estate, by them this day returned I that they make report thereof to next term of this court. p.284 (366 of records). Giles County, Tennessee, County Court Minutes, VOL H, 1823-1825. Original published: [Tennessee] : WPA, [19--?]. 1 v. Source located FHL Salt Lake City, UT & p.353 (462 of records) same source NOTE: 22 Aug 1825 Giles CO TN The commissioners who were appointed to allot to Prudence Wells widow of William H Wells, decd. one years provision out of the Estate of sd. Wm H. Wells made return thereof which is ordered to be recorded My question for this board... Does anyone know of a Prudence who marr to Wm H Wells (in Brunswick or Dinwiddie COs VA, or in Giles CO TN)? Who was she? What became of her? There were like 10 kids. The George Washington Wells born in 5/5/05 seems to be on the prison census for 1930, he was in the 1920 census as 15 and the one in prison was 25 and both are white, so I think that may be him. It seems that all the Wells siblings have birth certificates from Wilkes County, New Castle, but I am not sure where New Castle NC is.
