As I'm sure most of you already know, Amelia Earhart, the famous pioneer aviatrix of the 1930's who went missing in her attempted flight to circumnavigate the globe in 1937, was a Wells ancestor. Although she's never been far from the news headlines since her earliest days as an aviatrix pioneer, she's most recently in the headlines again now due to an expedition aimed at matching DNA from a living relative of Amelia's to some objects found on a tiny island not far from Howland Island, which is the area most experts believe Amelia disappeared in. One of Amelia's grandmothers was Mary Wells Patton , born in Somerset, PA on 28 Sept 1821, died 19 May 1893. Mary was the daughter of John Patton (1793-1836) and his wife, Harriet Wells (1800-1890). Harriet WELLS was born bet 9 Apr 1800 and 8 Apr 1801 in Somerset, Somerset County, PA. She died on 9 Apr 1890 in Somerset, Somerset County, PA and is buried in Ankeny Square Burial Ground, Somerset, Somerset County, Pennsylvania. John PATTON was born bet 22 July 1793 and 21 July 1794. He died on 21 Jul 1836 in Somerset, Somerset County, PA and is buried in Ankeny Square Burial Ground, Somerset, Somerset County, Pennsylvania. John PATTON and Harriet WELLS were married. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Orin or Bonita, do either of you know if Amelia's Wells ancestry has been linked to one of the Wells family groups? Just curious. Thanks :)
Hi Bonita, Just seen your note re Grenada Wells but have no idea how to proceed from here. My wife, nee Maureen Wells, is Grenadian and her cousin Syd Wells, also Grenadian, took part in an early genes test when he was living in Alaska. How can I follow this up to see if it is him and whether he connects to any other Wells line that you are working on? I am not aware of any other Wells in Grenada that would have taken part. Thanks for any help you may be able to give us. Alan Wilson. London, England.

I am told my grandfather and his relatives lived on his farm. He raised Strawberries, I know for sure and other crops. My grandfather, Walter Mathews (Mathis) was born in the area of Teachey, Rose Hill. Before he married he started using Mathis as his surname, don't know why. Later he went to work for John L. Roper Lumber Company in NC. His mother, Laura b. 1875, her sisters, Rhody and Matilda (aunt Matt) resided in the area until they died. My grandfather, Walter Mathews (Mathis)b. 1896 married Lottie Estelle Mclamb b. 1899 from Sampson County and they moved back to Duplin County where the first child was born. Then they moved to Wayne County. But its my understanding that he always went back to visit. Walter's mother died when he and his sister, Hattie b. 1895 were about 4 or 5 years old and their Aunts: Rhody and Matt raised both of them. Has anyone heard of this Wells Farm. Oram: I am wondering if there is any information yet as to any connections to H.P. Wells, whose name could be Hickman/;Hickson/Hixon Pendleton Wells. He was a probate judge in Marysville, Marshall County, KS around 1880. I am pretty sure that he is the father of my John Thomas Wells, b. 1870. However, the son of H.P. Wells listed in the 1880 census is listed as Thomas Wells. The reason I believe this is the correct family is as follows: 1. My father's name is George Pennelton Wells 2. I found connections from H.P. Wells married to Martha Scott through an online descendant listing indicating that H.P. Wells is Hickman Pendleton Wells. 3. The oldest son of H. P. Wells is named Pendleton Wells. Consequently, I truly believe that this is the correct connections to my father. My question is whether or not anyone has yet connected to this Wells family. Off the top of my head, they lived in 1870 in Marysville and in the 1860 census they were in Linn County, Kansas. Someone provided me a bio for Judge H.P. Wells, which states he was born in Adams County, MS in 1829. The bio did not name his parents; however, it did state that his mother was a Hickson of South Carolina (not sure if that is mentioned because there is some special distinction or not). The bio mentioned a sister (without name) and that he and his sister were orphaned when H.P. was 3 years old. It gave no information on who took care of him and his sister. H.P. Wells died and is buried in Marysville, KS, where is wife is also buried. The son Pendleton Wells married, had one daughter and lived in (off the top of my head) Ottawa County, KS. The census records indicate that H.P.'s mother was born South Carolina, and his father from West Virginia. I also have not found the parents of H.P. I have no clue as to the first name of his father, nor the first name of his mother. Can you find any connections to any of this in the records you have for Wells yet? Thanks for any assistance you can give. Denise (formerly in Indiana and now sunny Southern Florida

Maybe I'm trying to make this harder than it is. Let me clarify by saying I'm talking about the tree in Ancestry.com. It grows by starting with myself and then adding my parents. I'm in the process of starting all over (because of the duplications!) from a tree I began which now has about 1400 individuals in it! My new tree now has about 189 names, but I've been watching the list as I've entered the data and the duplications didn't start until I got to my two Wells brothers, Jasper Mashburn & Erastus Posey Wells (my great-grandfathers). So...should I have begun with just one of my parents, adding all the data when I got to my two great-grandfathers as brothers on let's say my father's side. Then when I added my mother's side and I got to her grandfather, would I pull him from the tree, rather than typing it in myself? Does Ancestry let you do that? I haven't had any problems in my FamilyTreeMaker software with the duplications, and it does have the capability to merge families . I appreciate your time and willingness to help me in this. No guarantee that this is reliable: http://www.archive.org/stream/narragansetthist01prov/narragansetthist01prov_djvu.txt The reference is about 2/3 of the page down - search for ' Wells Caleb ' . Josuha is listed on the next line with his birth date. -Tina Wells -----Original Message----- >From: "LadyBonita (USA)" <[email protected]> >Sent: Jul 23, 2009 3:04 AM >To: [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], [email protected] >Subject: [WELLS] Wells DNA Merge Database Status -- problem with Joshua Wells > >Yes, I am still alive and still working on the Wells DNA Merge Database. I have done EXTENSIVE work on Joshua Wells & his wife Sylvia (Clarke). Perhaps my website will help you. Most of my info has documentation. I get weary over all the conflicting info out there on this family. Conflicting info, that is, from people who just grab what they find, from any source, & post it as true. DOCUMENTATION is the key. Thank you so much for letting me know they did exist on a 1920 Census. Their son Robert was my grandfather. I can't find anything about his sister Beverly. She was born after 1910 and died before 1920. She was 4 when she got an oil lamp for Christmas. She spilled some of the oil on herself and then she knocked the lamp off the night table. She was set on fire. She died in the hospital. I'm wondering if she may have been their first child. Thank you for responding to my post. I get frustrated sometimes when I have information but it's not complete. Thanks again. Crystal Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
