    2. there are at least two lines in OH ... W001 and mine W015 .. James Wells b: 1792 CT/NH d: 1870 Norwalk, Huron Co., OH who married in Dec 1810 to Persis EARLE (b: 1792 VT d: 1865 Norwalk).  They moved from NY/VT before 1830 into the CT Reserve / Firelands which is now Erie and Huron Cos.  If my memory serves me correct, there is an Ezekiel and a Robert (son Pliny) that are different lines but are not W015. I thought I had traced another line back to W004 but I am away from home until Tuesday, will check then.  If you check on the merge site, there is a reference to the OH Lorain, Erie and Huron Cos as a 'researcher' and the data that I found on every WELLS/WELLES in Ohio I could find up through about 1880. Bonita ----- Original Message ----- From: "Marjorie Bridges" To: [email protected] Subject: [WELLS] Ohio Wells Date: Sun, 16 Aug 2009 07:56:31 -0700 (PDT) Bonita,Were those Ohio Wells from the Ezra Wells line? I could not find them in the Census before 1900. Well, this Mathews family was enumerated as Matthis in 1870 and 1880, the spelling of their surname was the reason that I could not find them. By 1900, they were enumerated as Mathews, later my grandpa's surname was changed to Mathis. So his descendants are Mathis at the present time. I recently found out that Samuel (S. B.) Wells b. 1880, GA was enumerated as living next door to the Mathis/Matthis/Mathews family. This family did general farming and while some of the family members were laborers 1900 and 1910 Census. So I am assumming that my ancestors worked for rhe Wells family. They lived in the dwelling next door to S. B. Wells. My grandpa, Walter Mathews/Mathis b. 1896 had a sister, Laura Mathews b 1895 m. Abraham (Abram) Bowen b. 1895 who was a Laborer on the Wells farm also. They had 4 children which I can't find in the census as of this present day. Their names were: Abram, Jr, Thomas, Edna and Martha. I am also looking for these 4 children and need help. Does anyone know or have heard of this Samuel Wells Family? There was a son or brother Willie, Henry, David; Sister,Irene as I recall from talking with my deceeased aunt. Thanks for reading my post. One of the sons lines came through Cambridge, Washington County, New York. In fact, Capt. Joseph Wells and his brother Edmund brought their families there after the Revolution. I have been working from Edmund 1618 forward and also from my Rachel Wells (1832 - Warren County, NY) back. This is the line that I have been tracing: Edmund to Thomas Wells/Grace Wright(b. 1658) to Thomas Wells (b. 1694)/Elizabeth Merrill to Edmund Wells (b. 1721)/Mary Howell. Thomas & Elizabeth had several children including sons Edmund and Joseph who moved from Hebron, Tolland Connecticut, to Cambridge, Washington, NY. There is a lot of information in the Family Tree section about the various families connected to this line. There is also information in the Barbour Records about these families in Connecticut. These Wells scattered throughout NY after leaving Washington County. Could be a connection to your family. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 1. Re: [WELLS] Which Wells group does Amelia Earhart belong to?
    2. Thanks, Orin. Although I haven't researched Amelia's line in great detail, the information about her Wells line comes from a detailed biography of Amelia, published in 1997. The book, titled ' Amelia: The Centennial Biography of an Aviation Pioneer' by Donald M. Goldstein and Katherine V. Dillon. In the book, they have used family information and other verified family records of Amelia's family, on both her father and mother's side. Amelia's middle name of 'Mary' comes from her grandmother, Mary Wells Patton (John Patton and Harriet Wells' daughter). There are a few pages regarding some of these ancestors. One person who mentioned them was Peter Rhodes [email protected] He too is a descendent of this family and may also not be aware of the connection. Here is some related information posted over 7 years ago. "Mrs. Mary Musser Wells, wife of John Wells, died in Somerset, April 8, 1848, aged 81 years. Adaline Wells, died in or near Maysville, Ky., aged about 20 years, at the home of her uncle Thomas Wells, whilst there on a visit." Obituary, by her cousin: "Died on the 29th day of March last, at the residence of her uncle, Thos. Wells, Sr., in Mason County, Ky., six miles east of Maysville, where she had been on a visit, Miss Adeline Wells, daughter of John Wells, esq., in this borough, aged 19 years and 9 days, whilst her parents, animated with the prospect of her return, and her companions fondly anticipating her renewed friendship and sociability, the appalling intelligence arrived in Somerset that she was no more. In the loss of Adaline, society is bereft of one of its most interesting members. The poor, disconsolate and distressed, always found in her a friend and warm supporter, so far as was in her power to contribute consolation and relief. She was courteous to all, gave offense to none, and by example taught others the beauty of innocent liveliness and Christianity. She always held a deep interest in her Saviour, Jesus Christ, who called her to a happy immortality. Our stay is short, we soon must go, >From grief and sorrow here below; In shouts of triumph, we shall fly And spend a blest eternity. Tho' far from dearest friends we die, Our Saviour pleads for us on high; Let sorrow cost them not a sigh, For like dear Ad'line they must lie." Harriet Wells, dau. of John, married John Patton, Dec. 19, 1820 in Somerset, Pa., by Dr. Kierier. She was the only one of the children of John Wells, who left decendents. John Patton was born in Londonderry, Ireland, May 8, 1794. He edited the first paper in Somerset, Co. Pa. "The Somerset Patriot". They had eight children. One son, John Wells Patton, seven daughters. 3. One small correction. The y-chromosome is NOT passed on the to daughters. Instead a second (half) "X" chromosome is passed on from father to the daughter. It is generally not of much use in DNA testing for genealogical purposes. The X Chromosome in all but the males, as with all autosomnal chromosomes (everything but the mtDNA from the mothers and y-chromosome from the father to the son), consists of two halves Half comes from the father and half from the mother. And the markers on these chromosomes are "diluted" every generation which is why it is so difficult to follow the dna back up the tree unless there is something very unique that shows in later generations and is traceable to a specific ancestor. 3. For surname DNA they must be a biological WELLS male. The number of generations is not a problem as long as he is descended from a male WELLS. You see the Y-chromosome is passed almost unaltered from father to son. It does pass on to the daughter, but she does not pass it on to her children .. Her husband does. -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of [email protected] Sent: Tuesday, August 04, 2009 6:16 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [WELLS] Burrell Wells Susannah Featherstone How close does the descendant have to be and can they be male or female?
