They emigrated in 1830 from Erie Co., NY, to Delaware Co., Ohio, where they raised 9 children (two of whom were from his previous marriage). 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: audiorij Surnames: Wells, Townsend Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.wells/5515/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I am trying to solve a mystey, my great great great great grandfather, Joseph Townsend, was accidentally shot while hunting my a man named Wells. This occured in Tuscarawas County, Ohio in 1816 and a newspaper article said that Mr. Wells currently lived there and had been a neighbor of Townsend's near Mount Pleasant. Joseph Townsend had lived in Short Creek, Ohio which is near Mount Pleasant. While trying to find the name of Mr. Wells, I ran accross a surveyor John Wells who moved to Short Creek in 1806 and helped plat out New Philadelphia in Tascarawas County Ohio; Somerset County, Pennsylvania Recorder of Deeds, Book 2, page 481; Agreement "Somerset County PA [?] Before me John Wells one of the Commonwealth Justices of the peace in & for said County personally came Isaac Bennett & Richard Nicholson the parties to the foregoing agreement, and acknowledged the same to be their Act and Deed & desired it to be recorded agreeably to law. In Witness whereof I have hereto set my hand & seal the first day of January one thousand eight hundred & one ~ 1801. Brunsman, pg 287 Septermber 21, 1752 New Philadelphia Founder John Kinsley Born ....Knisley returned to Ohio in 1804 with the rest of his family and 33 other pioneers. He hired surveyor John Wells to lay out New Philadelphia in a grid fashion similar to that of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. When Tuscarawas County was organized on March 15, 1808, the town became the county seat. Knisley died at age 82 on December 15, 1834. He is buried at East Fair Street Cemetery. By Charles Augustus Hanna, pg 114 "Harrisville was platted by John Wells, Thomas Gray, Store Hutchinson, and Robert Dutton, Oct. 19, 1814. Plat filed, Jan. 9, 1815." The Western Herald, Steubenville, Ohio, December 20, 1816 Distressing Incident - A truly distressing and melancholy event transpired, on Wednesday last, in the woods between the Laurel and Atkinson forks of the Big Stillwater, near West Chester, Tuscarawa Co., Ohio. The circumstances are these: A Mr. (Joseph)Townsend and a Mr. (John?) Wells went out in company, hunting. They had separated a little distance. Mr. Townsend espying a flock of turkeys, had laid down, apparently with the intention of shooting, imitating the noise of a turkey, in order to draw them closer. Mr. Wells coming up at the same time, also saw the turkeys; and seeing the head of Mr. Townsend just rising above the ground, (who was in the act of firing himself), he unfortunately mistook the movement of his friend's head for the motion of a turkey; whereupon he levelled and fired. The ball pierced the head of Mr. Townsend, who expired before Mr. Wells had time to run to him; which the latter did as quick as possible, in order to pick up his turkey, as he thought-- e! ntirely unconscious of the distracting catastrophe, until his arrival at the fatal spot. What renders the event truly distressing is, that they were related. They had lived neighbors near Mountpleasant. Mr. Wells had removed some time previous, near to where the unhappy scene transpired, and Mr. Townsend had gone out there in order to pay a visit to his friend. I am wondering if John Wells, the surveyor of Somerset Pennsylvania could be the same John Wells that platted these areas in Ohio and may have lived there a few years while doing so.... Since I don't have the means to subscribe to ancestry he did a lot for me. He sent a 'possible' 1920 census for Harold in CA as being in the USN. I don't know if Harold was in the USN but I held on to that census. Now Lydia is a lost cause! Your info of Lydia marrying a Wm. Lennox is totally new to me! I have Canadian records for her, in French, even possible her birth! I show she was 22 when she married Nelson Towner and the record has No in the previous marriage column for both of them. Never could find a marriage record for Harold & Lydia! On a 1925 marriage record for one of Lydia's brothers Harold & Lydia Wells were witnesses living in Detroit! Sure can't find Lydia. I found Lydia married to a William Lennox in Canada, but don't know the date. Possibly before Nelson Towner. Lydia was always a mystery to me. 1. [WELLS] Wells Descendants with the G2a2 Haplogroup subtype
    2. Gretchen Starke
    3. Hi Folks: I am a descendant of Peter Wells who married Nancy Simon in Gasconade County, Missouri on 02 Apr 1823. We have hit a brick wall with Peter. According to census records he was born abt 1800 in Kentucky. My mother was a Wells, [Rowena Hazel Wells, daughter of Henry Nolan Wells and Audora Reynolds; Henry was the son of Edward Felix Wells and Martha Jane Elizabeth Owen; Edward was the son of Peter Wells and Nancy Simon]. So we do not have the Wells surname in our immediate family, however some of my Wells cousins who have been active on this list have had other male relatives contribute to the Y-chromosome study and our branch has come up as belonging to W006 (Descendants of Thomas Wells, born abt 1653 who married Frances mnu). I noticed in looking over the DNA listings that a group of W006 families have “19” on the DYS158, and all those families are in the G Haplogroup subgroup of G2a2. This makes me think we are more closely related to each other than we are to the others in the W006 group. I am hoping that by researching these families somewhere we can find the connection to our Peter. These are the families in this subgroup: W461 Peter Wells/Nancy Simons Kentucky b: Cir 1800 to Austin County, Texas ID 421 W462 William A. Wells/Selma Andres Illinois Cir 1865 to Lewis, Pottawamie County, Iowa ID 436 W313 Nelson Wells/Uriel Jennings Mason Co., Kentucky b: cir 1799 to Grayson Co., Virginia ID 90 W314 Anderson H. Wells/Deborah Jennings Clermont Co., Ohio b: Cir 1800 to Schuyler Co., Illinois ID 193 W316 Charles Artemus Wells/Emma Ozella Harevey Grayson Co., Texas b: 28 Ap 1861 to Waco McLennan Co., Texas ID 273 W020 Zachariah Wells/Abigail Osborne Virginia? b: Cir 1739 to Lee/Wise Co, Virginia ID 548 There were two or three links on the Association web site for researchers with online family trees for descendants of this Thomas Wells. None of those links work, the websites have either been moved or no longer exist. If you belong to any of these families, and can send me a listing of descendants and ancestors of your line, I would be delighted to receive it. Please provide sources. I have not posted my family trees yet but will be happy to share what I have. I am also currently working on the Owen family connection through Martha’s father John B Owen and making some progress there. I have the 2011 version of Family Tree Maker and have membership on ancestry.com as gretchenstarke. As a side note: Family tradition says we have Native American blood. I am wondering if Peter is the son of a Wells that married a native American. My grandfather Henry Nolan Wells was tall with very prominent native American facial characteristics. He also had glaucoma in his later years, and I have been told his father also had glaucoma. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Sincerely, Gretchen Starke
