Author: kinchaser12 Surnames: Wells Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.wells/5526/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Found this while searching my family in the Estherville, Ia. Newspapers. Mr. Wells is NOT mine. Neither of these gentlemen are mine, but I figured Mr. Wells' family would never be able to find this newspaper mention. Vindicator And Republican (Estherville, Emmet Co., Iowa) January 13, 1938 (Front Page) J.M. WOLDEN HAS INTERESTING OLD LAND DOCUMENT J. M. Wolden has in his possession a patent for 160s acres of Wisconsin land issued by President Zachary Taylor to Milton Wells who had been a member of a Texas cavalry. Dated 1847 it was evidently for services in the Mexican border war. Mr. Wolden does not remember how he came to have the certificate which is in almost perfect condition after these 90 years with the ink still clear and legible. He [sic] may have come to him while he was justice of peace in High Lake township. The Milton Wells recipent of the grant is not a relative. Hope this can help someone. Author: W420WELLS Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.wells/5522.3/mb.ashx Message Board Post: There are documented examples of the French name Dupuis which means either the place of the well or at the well being changed in such manner. As an example in North America the British displaced French settlers in Acadia present day Nova Scotia. (see poem Evangeline by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow). Many of those refugees who eventually re-settled in the Eastern part of North America Anglicized their names. In the Baltimore area in particular, displaced Dupuis from Acadia became Wells, Atwell, Newell, etc. in order to fit in with the prevailing population. Those dumped in the swamps of Louisiana kept their French names as there weren't many other 'civilized' people there at the time to have to contend with. The same thing happened to Quebec residents who migrated to the US when times were bad in Canada. They had to appear 'English' to get jobs and fit in with society. So much for melting pot. In early North America such folks were commonly referred to as 'White N---ers' Yes, the dreaded "N" word. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. No, you don't want to make this family Atwell. It has been Wells for centuries. John already knows he is in W003 as he was one of the first members of the old BYU special test group. I have been very fortunate in my Wells family research efforts of late. I hired several British genealogists and made a two week trip to England myself and have made some incredible discoveries. Not only have I been able to trace my Wells branch to Willesborough, Kent, as far back as 1519, I have discovered that our real last name is not WELLS. A 1538 baptismal record lists one of my ancestor's name as "Atwell," but by his death date the family hasd changed its name to WELLS. Has anyone else encountered this? I have the 1930 census that shows Ervin as his son but I do not think Ervin was his 'biological' son! Lydia was married to a Nelson Towner in 1915. I have not been able to find a marriage record for Harold & Lydia. If I've done the math correctly, using info from the 1930 census, Harold is age 37, married at age 29 = marriage year about 1922. Also if he had been married just 8 years and Ervin is listed as 12 yrs. old, I am really thinking that Ervin is not his biological son. Neither of the obits I have for Harold & Lydia has a date of marriage for them. >From the WW I draft registration for Nelson Towner he is still married. I have a possible 1920 census for a 'Harry' Wells in the USN in CA and he is listed as age 27 & single. I believe several years ago I had made a connection with your mother but having computer problems & moving to where I had to change my e-mail provider I lost contact with her.
