    1. Re: [WELLS] Missouri Death (some birth/marriage) Records online
    2. Ken Welch
    3. To Peggy in particular, but others who may have Wells ties to Missouri, some of these records are online: http://www.sos.mo.gov/archives/resources/birthdeath/#search1 I've actually solved several unknowns/brick walls because of records I've found here!  a GREAT resource! :) Try the "real" first name first.  If no hits, then leave that part blank.  You'll get a ton of matches to go through, but it has been fruitful for me.  Also, once you get that list of matches, don't forget to click on "images" to the right.  That's where the ACTUAL image will come up. Peggy, there were several William Wells that came up in the search, but I couldn't be sure as I'm not as familiar with your line with other names/etc.  BUT...I will say that I found a "BILL WELLS" that died around 1916 that might be a match. Once you get an image, pay close attention to birth/death dates, places, all the people listed.  Also keep in mind that sometimes people filling out the death certificate may not know the answers, or write down the wrong answer.  This has been the case a few times in my family.  The "informant" was a younger child, and "thought" their father was born in the same town they had lived most of his life, not knowing from where their parents came. I couldn't get a hit for "Monroe" at all.  My guess is that perhaps they didn't stay in Missouri.  I don't think we're connected, but many of those names do copy names of my Wells family that came from KY.  Some of these ended up in Texas.  So...you might check the Texas Death records found on ancestry.com and familysearch.org (libraries usually have access to these websites. Hope this helps! Melanie PS...Peggy....if you want to contact me off the Wells board, my other line is Riggs.  They are Riggs originally from CT 1700's-1810....then New York to 1840....then MD to 1870's...then Texas to present. ------------------------------ Message: 3 Date: Sat, 10 Sep 2011 18:44:51 -0000 From: "gc-gateway@rootsweb.com" <gc-gateway@rootsweb.com> Subject: [WELLS] Monroe WELLS, b. 1908, MO To: <WELLS-L@rootsweb.com> Message-ID: <1315680293.403989@rootsweb.com> Content-Type: text/plain; This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. 1. [WELLS] WELLS Betty Orr
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: Lace_Lynch Surnames: Classification: obituary Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.wells/5532/mb.ashx Message Board Post: CROTON: Betty Orr was born in Cleveland, Ohio (Cuyahoga County) the second-oldest of five girls. Lillian, Betty, Anna Mary, Dorothy and Ruth grew to become the most amazing women: filled with strength, pragmatic wisdom and (most of all) filled with love. Betty attended Otterbein College and it was there that she met a smart, handsome boy named Tom Wells. This was the beginning of an epic partnership that spanned 67 years. Tom and Betty had four children: Judith (Baker), Marilee (Kushner), Timothy and James. She also took endless joy in her grandchildren: Julie, Christopher, Emily, Zarah, Erin, Zachary, and the newest addition to the family, great-grandchild, Tobias. And as the grandchildren grew, she took delight as they had their own adventures, relationships, and families. Betty spent her adult life, together with Tom, in Ohio and northern Virginia. After raising four kids, most people would be ready for a break. Not Betty. She went back to college for a second master's degree and then began a career as a school nurse. There was nothing extraordinary about this in Betty's mind: each phase of life brought new opportunities and interesting experiences. Nothing exemplifies this attitude more than their retirement move to Tom's family farm in Croton, Ohio. This must have been a bold move for a city girl like Betty, but she embraced country life and the sense of community and never looked back. Over the years, the farm evolved into an extended-family compound. It was the members of the Wells Farm, through their love and support, who made it possible for Betty to stay home through the end of her life. Betty leaves dear friends and family from Virginia to California and back to Ohio. Betty was an accomplished watercolor artist and she loved gardening. It's probably more accurate to say that Betty simply loved life. On hikes, she breathed deeply and swung her arms vigorously (she made sure her kids did the same; hands in the pockets was not okay!) It was not just on hikes. This is how Betty lived: breathing deeply of life and cherishing the moment. Betty probably baked 1,000 "welcome" cakes in her lifetime. Returning visitors and family came to expect the sweet scent of fresh baking wafting from the kitchen and a welcome cake on the table. Not a single one of those cakes was necessary because you knew you were welcome in Betty's home. Those of us who knew and loved Betty are better people for having her in our lives. We will still breath deep and swing our arms because that's what she taught us, but perhaps not with the same energy because the world lost a little of its joyfulness when Betty left us. A service to celebrate the life of Betty Wells will be held at Croton United Methodist Church (75 North High Street, Croton, Ohio 43013) at 3 pm on September 12, 2011. In lieu of flowers and in recogition of the importance of the church in Betty's life, donations may be made to Croton United Methodist Church. Crouse-Kauber-Sammons Funeral Home of Johnstown, Ohio is assisting the family. An online memorial can be located at www.cksammons.com. 1. [WELLS] Any connections or suggestions? My brick wall
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: BarbaraMunson60 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.wells/5531/mb.ashx Message Board Post: This is lengthy, but this brick wall has been driving me crazy for years. If you connect to this family, please contact me. If you don't connect, but have suggestions or tips on where I should turn next, please contact me. My grandfather was Howard Rufus Wells, born June 25, 1886 in Cannons Crossing, Sussex County, Delaware. His marriage license lists his father as Charles Wells and his mother as Mary A. Lippincott - she was the daughter of Elwood Lippincott and Lydia Austin. Charles and Mary had at least 3 children besides my grandfather: Elwood L. Wells - Born c. 1878 in New Jersey. He appears in the 1880 census with his mother in her parents' home. Edward P. Wells - Born 1884 in New Jersey. Married Sarah Elizabeth Borden (per his son's obituary); died August 1912 in Medford, NJ. His only child, Edward John Wells, died 1988 in Salem, NJ. Harvey M. Wells - Born March 28, 1890 in Georgetown, Sussex Co., Delaware. He married Iva Buckson, had children Helen Beatrice (died as a baby) and Mary Iva Wells (married Frank Tomlin, died 1982). He died in Millville, Cumberland Co., NJ in 1956, after having been lame for much of his adult life. In the 1880 census, Mary Lippincott Wells is in her parents' house in Burlington Co., NJ with her son, Elwood; she's listed as married, but her husband isn't in the household. Also in the household are children Anna Maud Smith, age 5, and Fanny Hewitt, age 1. Looking at the actual image, it seems like next to Anna Maude Smith it says HER DAUGHTER, which would mean Mary's since she's listed just below Mary. In the 1895 NJ census, I found the 4 Wells brothers in Mount Laurel, Burlington County. Also in the household are Mary Bates, age 20-60; Mary Gill, age 20-60; Harry Gill, age 20-60; Warren Gill, age 5-20; Lizzie Gill, age 5-20; John Smith, age 20-60; William Smith, age 20-60; Maud Smith, age 5-20. By the 1900 census, Mary's a widow, and she states that she is the mother of 10 children, 8 still living. Other than the 4 Wells boys listed, the only other sibling name I've ever heard was Maud. For years I worked on the assumption that these children were all Wells, but now I'm thinking that Mary had been married to a Smith before Charles Wells, that the Anna Maud Smith in the 1880 census is Mary's daughter, and that the Smith children in the 1895 census were the missing siblings. I've searched the census records for the people in the 1895 census, but the only ones I've found were the Gills. By 1900 Harry's a widow and listed as the father of Warren and Lizzie. Because Mary Gill is dead by 1900, she could be one of the Smith/Wells siblings (and one of Mary Lippincott Wells' 2 dead children.) My great-grandfather, Charles Wells, has not been found anywhere in the records - census, obituaries, marriage, birth or death records, etc. I also haven't been able to find evidence that Mary Lippincott was married before she married Charles. In a weird side note, Millville's city directory listed Mary as the widow of Thomas Wells, but he died before the family ever moved to Millville so I'm discounting it. I figure my grandfather listed his dad as Charles, and he should know better than the Millville directory. ANY help on this would be greatly appreciated. My dad did participate in the Wells DNA project, and it seems as though we're not related to anyone within the past 23 generations. I run across all the time where two different researchers will find a death or birth of a person with the same name and in the same location and approximately the same time and ASSUME it is the same person. It is most prevalent when two guys with the same name descended from two different sets of parents end up marrying the same woman ... and many have the same death. They have just confused two people in their research. My advice is to do research on both until you can knock one out of the running.
