    1. Re: [WELLES] Family Tree DNA Testing
    2. Lady Bonita via (USA)
    3. I will say since I moved my 23andme autosomal test to FTDNA "Family Finder" I have found two cousins: both are desc from the sister of two of my direct gr-grandparents ancestors .... They have stipulated many more are 3rd cousin to 5th cousin but cannot find a connection. I suspect since both of use have an 'illegitimate' birth that the same guy may be the culprit. Unfortunately, I cannot get my Y-DNA guys to do an 'upgrade' so not going to find anything there. Very disheartening since the Y-would prove more promising for me. Course, since we already have 42 markers from Ancestry.com ... I guess they would have to do the Y-67 marker. Additionally, FTDNA seems to be swamped. My DAVIES (Welsh) line ... I convinced an aging desc of my grandmother's biological brother (she was adopted after father died). He submitted the test over two months agao for the Y67 and todate FTDNA has only provided results for 28 markers so no matches. Bonita \\\|/// \\ ~ ~ // ( @ @ ) ----oOOo-(_)-oOOo---- Just Lurking ... 1. [WELLES] Special sale and adopting a participant's Test Results
    2. Orin Wells via
    3. *End of Summer Sale *Family Tree DNA is conducting a special sale *until September 3rd* for anyone who has been waiting for whatever reason to get a test. If you have an FTDNA account you will want to order from within that account because your DNA sample is presumable already in their hands. Otherwise just go to: familytreedna.com and order the tests. The offers are as follows: 37 marker test @ $129 ($20 less than through the Wells project) 67 marker test @ $199 111 marker test @ 279 There is no change in the $99 charge for the Family Finder test (the autosomal DNA test) The 37 marker test plus the Family Finder test is $228. Yes, that is the sum of the 37 marker test special price and the usual Family Finder test. The transfer is still $19 I have seen no evidence that upgrade from the transfer to the 37 marker test is changed from $39. I have seen no motivating reason to go beyond the 37 marker test for most people IF they are among the 90% who match with other Wells cousins. It is the folks who are "orphans" who might find the higher numbers of markers useful or if you are trying to get some subtle marker differences to narrow down to a particular branch of a family. But that requires someone else in the project to also take the test with more markers. Order here: https://www.familytreedna.com/products.aspx *Adopting A Test* If you are a relative or sponsor of someone who took a DNA test for the Wells project or if you were the one who rustled up several cousins to get tested but they never had the interest you had or the person has died consider adopting their DNA test so we can move it to Family Tree DNA with the project. To do so you will want to create a new account with the order in that person's name but with your contact information. Just follow the instructions I have sent earlier OR ask me. *Ancestry PDF Files.* I have downloaded all but 86 of the files from Ancestry now for those in the Wells project. If you took y-DNA or mtDNA tests at ancestry you may have until the end of September to get the PDF file before they shut the access down. The ones I have are for the folks who tested at BYU, SMGF (transferred to Relative Genetics) or at Relative Genetics. These were transferred when Ancestry acquired Relative Genetics. The remaining accounts have had their original password changed from Welcome or Welcome1 to something different. If you changed your password on one of these accounts, please send me the new password and I will get the file for you. It is a bit tedious if you have not done it a couple hundred times as I have. I will be contacting those whose files I have not been able to get in the next few days. Anyone who actually tested at dna.Ancestry.com and joined our project after the Relative Genetics transfer have accounts I know nothing about. We need you to download your PDF files before they are lost. I will be trying to identify you folks and contact you about this but please save me time and reach out to me first. *Wells Project At Family Tree DNA* We are starting to define groupings at family Tree DNA that reflect what we have been doing since the original project was launched 14 years ago. Each test will be placed in a sub-group matching the assigned Family code (W001, W002 etc.) so someone can look at the tables on Family Tree DNA and find out what family they are assigned to. Those we can not place with one or more cousin will be left "unassigned". We need more of you to initiate the transfers. There are several base-line families for which it appears we still do not have anyone who has opened a transfer account. The urgency of getting the PDF files has relaxed because Ancestry will give us to the end of September to get the files, but we need to do so as soon as possible. There is no particular deadline for the transfer at Family Tree DNA but if you don't want to have to enter your own data, you need to get me your PDF file and set up the transfer file before we initiate the mass data upload. That will probably take place early October once it seems we have as many transfers set up as we are going to get. DO NOT try to enter your data markers despite what the box on the left center of your account says you need to do. This will certainly result in manual entry errors. It is just human nature. And there seems to be no way to fix this once it happens. So leave the data entry part to me. *Don't Want To Give Up Your Credit Card on line?* I have had two of our participants send me the $19 to handle the transfer payments and set up their accounts for them. I am good with doing that for you. Please send the payment to Orin Wells PO Box 5427 Kent, WA 98064 *Help us With The Adoptions* There are some tests where we know the participant is deceased. We had people in their 80s participate in 2000 when we first started this project and others who are no longer with us and we have nobody in their family willing to continue the genealogy work for them. We want to adopt as many of these tests as we can to bring them to Family Tree DNA. If we have to priortize we will make certain there are representative samples from each of the major base-line families. If you would like to contribute to this effort, please send contributions for that effort. I already had one person send $50. There are two ways to do this. You can send the contribution to: Wells Family Research Association PO Box 5437 Kernt, WA 98064 Or if you DO want to use a credit card, go to the Wells project at Family Tree DNA and contribute to the Fund at the bottom of the page. Currently there is no money in that account, so anything that comes in we will know is for this project OR if we get a lot of contributions we will start a fund to again seek samples in England so those of us who are still stumped as to where our ancestors originated in the British Isles came from. I think if we can entice English genealogists to give up their DNA where it is less expensive or free for them we may make some headway. Those of you who got the free tests during phase 1 of this project. It is a way to "pay it forward". -- Orin Wells 253-630-5296

    3. Please forgive me if this was posted yesterday to this list. I tried to send it to all the Wells Lists last night in a list out of my email account and I only saw one copy of it show up in my email account. I think Roots Web may have decided it was maybe spam. When we started out with the Wells DNA Project 14 years ago we had a phase III that was to include the female descendants of Wells families as well as males who did not carry the Wells surname. I was pretty sure from discussions with the scientists involved that they would eventually get here even thought they still have work to do. I want to encourage all of you who have been standing by hoping this would come to pass to now step up and get your DNA tested. Whether you choose to do it at Ancestry or FamilyTreeDNA may not be important. Both are offering a similarly priced product and analysis tools to help those who are tested to find possible matches with cousins. Those of you who have found your Wells cousins should consider this to help you find cousins with information on other branches of your family. Those of you who discovered you did not match a Wells family should take this test to see if you can find the cousins who might be able to help you find out why you didn't match a Wells. All you men who took the y-chromosome tests should consider this test because, again, of the potential to help you find information on the rest of your ancestors. At Ancestry they have a special price sale running until Wednesday Midnight Eastern Daylight Time. The cost until then is $79 = $20 off the regular $99 price. So those of you on the West Coast that is only until 9 PM The special price will go back to $99 after the deadline. The time is short because I wrestled with this due to what Ancestry has done with the y-chromosome testing for the second time. I honestly can't guarantee they will not do it in time with this product as well. IO When we started out with the Wells DNA Project 14 years ago we had a phase III that was to include the female descendants of Wells families as well as males who did not carry the Wells surname. I want to encourage all of you who have been standing by hoping this would come to pass to now step up and get your DNA tested. Go here to order it: http://dna.ancestry.com/ Click on thj "Get AncestryDNA" button in the middle of the screen. To order the FamilyFinder product at FamilyTree DNA ($99) - go here: https://www.familytreedna.com/landing/atdna-landing.aspx If you already have a family tree DNA account, log in to the account before you order this test. As with any DNA test there is no guarantee of success. What you are looking for are matches to cousins you never knew about with the hope that they will have family knowledge and/or genealogies that will help you fill in your family tree. We will have additional discussions on what to do once you have your results and discover the testing company says you match 500 other people. How do you boil it down to those who are REALLY likely to be cousins? If you find few leads at first, what we can hope for is hundreds of thousands of others will take the tests and more matches will show up including that key cousin you have been waiting for. I can't tell you for sure whether it would be better at Ancestry or Family Tree DNA. They both have benefits. One to Ancestry is they have a lot of genealogical family trees and information that may be of help IF you have an Ancestry subscription. I don't know which has the more data sets to compare against. They don't reveal this sort of information. I would also lean toward AncestryDNA because you can transfer your test results over to FamilyTreeDNA (an additional charge of $69). You then you would have your data on both systems to be matched. Ancestry, as far as I know, has no provision to transfer a FamilyFinder test to AncestryDNA. Family Tree DNA is in the process of making it possible to upload gedcom files so that they will have family trees that can be linked to these tests and give researchers a better insight into whether there is a likely genealogical match. But it is going to take a while before they have enough genealogies on line to make it very helpful. -- Orin Wells 253-630-5296

    3. *Where should you get your DNA tested?* As most of you know Ancestry has discontinued the y-Chromosome and mtDNA testing. So the only viable option for us is now to test at Family Tree DNA. Any of you who have been sitting on the sidelines trying to decide whether to be tested or not, if you decide you will want to select the 37 marker test at Ftdna.com. More markers? You can, but IMHO we know enough from the 37 markers to be able to match you to your ancestral Wells family. The cost is $149 through the Wells project, so ask me for eht link before you do that. Remember though that you MUST test a male in your family who still carries the Wells y-chromosome. Females and any non-Wells males who had a Wells female ancestor will not work. If confused on this, email me. *The Wells DNA Project* I have been invited to become a co-manager of the Wells DNA Project at Family Tree DNA joining Cynthia Wells and Lincoln Mulkey. Through this merger we will potentially expand the Wells project to about 700 tests. This puts them all in one place where they can be searched for matches making the possibility of finding (more) cousins greater and leading to more genealogy which is what all of us are after in the final analysis. *The Wells Project Transfer* Anyone who was involved in the Wells DNA project should have received an email from me regarding the details on the transfer. If you did not and you have been tested whether in our project or independently through Ancestry.com let me know and I will send you the details. If you ARE in the project and did not receive the message then you may have changed email addresses and I do not know the current address. Please email me on this. There wer 161 people for whom the email address I have did not work. So I will have to reach out to them by telephone or other means to let them know what to do. This is going to take time. *Get your results from DNA.Ancestry.com before they are lost. *If you or a relative were tested under any of the projects or were just independently tested at Relative Genetics or Ancestry and have your results at Ancestry you need to log in to you account and down load the PDF file with your results before Ancestry removes these from their site on Sept. 5th. If you don't know how to do this, email and and I will send you the instructions for that. The bad news here is that their DNA data pages have been broken since at least Friday with only a rare opening. So you may have to keep trying to log in each day until they fix whatever they have broken. I have emailed my contact with this information and have so far received no response. If I have no response in another day I will elevate this up the Ancestry food chain. -- Orin Wells 253-630-5296
