    1. [WEBB] Late 16th Century English names (1580s or so to 1600)
    2. I am researching a medieval era novel and I ran across the following, which I thought might be interesting to the list. Eli is probably from Old French Elie<Elias not Hebrew Eli Ellis is probably a late survivor of Middle English Elis<Elias but possibly a transferred surname. One case it is listed as "Ellis (Halius)..." which tends to confirm the identity with Elias. Harman If English it is Old French Herman(t) but at least one instance is probably from the Low Countries. Harry not a pet form, but the English vernacular form of Old French Henri; rarely found in documents however. Lewis Two instances are Welsh. Commonly and early used as an equivalent of Llywelyn. Margaret: Two of the three non-standard spellings are Welsh -- Margarete and Margareta. Frequency of Names (listed in descending order of frequency) by Talan Gwynek as on Brian M. Scott's website.
