Dear Friends, Cousins and Relatives of all descriptions, I'm a history as well as genealogy buff, and I think most of you are also, therefore, I forward the following information as it applies to all of you to one extent or another. Many of you are connected to the Webbs who were one of the leading families within one area of Lawrence County, Kentucky during the middle to late 1800s. Over one hundred and twenty-two years ago a town was named for the Webb clan in that county called "Webbville." Information contained below is taken from the Kentucky Explorer. ________________________ "In 1879 a state gazeteer was published for the entire state of Kentucky. The book included a description of most every community from the smallest to the largest. Agents for the book must have traveled to all parts of Kentucky collecting names and advertisements. The book does not contain any photographs. (Just think of the scenes they could have photographed.) Most every month The Kentucky Explorer reprints portions of this very book, and I noted this one in the June issue. The fact that this town was named after one particular group of KY Webbs, I gained from other genealogical information. In this article it stated that the first Postmaster appointed there was a Webb, also. I don't remember his first name, but it could be the one listed in this article contained in the Gazeteer. ______________________________ WEBBVILLE In the northwestern part of Lawrence County, 20 miles northwest of Louisa, the county seat; three miles south of Willard, its nearest shipping point, on the E. K. Ry; and 220 miles east of Louisville. Tri-weekly stage to Willard and Paintsville. Fare to the former point, 25 cents; to the latter, $2.25. Adams Express. Daily mail. Population, 200. B.F. Webb, Postmaster. BUSINESS DIRECTORY Candill Rev Jeremiah.(Think this might be a misprint, should be (Caudill) Hudgis T W, general store and physician. Johnson Rev John, Baptist Perkins H C, general store Thompson John, livestock. Thornesbury Rev Louis. Webb B F, livestock. Webb G W, saw and flour mill. Webb Levi, livestock. Webb & Pennington, flour mill." _________________________ If you are descended from this group, you will note that JAMES WEBB, JR., b. May 15, 1787, fathered, with the assistance of Mrs. WEBB, one ELIZABETH PENNINGTON, 12 children. You will also note if you compare them to the initials given by the Gazeteer, many conform to the male members initials. Also, the Webb & Pennington Flour Mill doesn't take a whole lot of imagination to connect to this family. Interesting isn't it?
