    3. He seems to be quite well known. I remember finding several mentions and paragraphs about him several years ago when I was searching for New England Samuel Webbs to find my correct Samuel Webb ancestors. I'm sure you could find a reference in documents during that era to him. Sure were a lot of Samuel Webbs. 3. Oh, you Southern Webbs! There is a lot of Webb history in New England; we've just never successfully connected it with the Southern Webbs where most of the family research is being done. But if you are ever in Connecticut or Vermont it is worth a visit. General Samuel Blatchley Webb lived in Wethersfield, CT (just outside Hartford). His house there is maintained as an historic site because: he was an aide to General Washington and so was the host in Wethersfield, in that house, to a meeting between Washington and General Lafayette at which the plan was developed for the southern campaign of the Revolution and eventual victory. It is a fascinating place to tour - and it has a good library attached with, among other things, a good genealogy book done in the 1800s on the Connecticut Webbs, funded, I think, by the Webb who married Cornelius Vanderbilt's daughter and built the Webb estate on the shores of Lake Champlain in Sherburne, Vermont, also open as a fascinating museum of American crafts.. Try as I might, I couldn't get the Wethersfield Webb House staff to copy it for me - but it is there for research on the whole Richard Webb line. Last year for Christmas my sons gave me a copy of Samuel Blatchley Webb's collected correspondence. One of the treasures: an anguished letter from Washington after Webb had been captured by the British, explaining that Washington would negotiate the release of his officers only in the order in which they had been captured and that he could not, for honor's sake, make an exception for his friend. -----Original Message----- From: webb-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:webb-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Ian Sent: Monday, January 15, 2007 11:54 PM To: webb@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [WEBB] My answer- in part He seems to be quite well known.
