DNA has shown that the descendents of Christopher Webb do not match other WEBB lines -- which pretty well blows the "four brothers" theory into the water. If it were just the one line, I'd suspect an NPE (non-paternity event). However, it appears that none of the "four brothers" has matching DNA at this point. Which leads me to believe that the entire story of the "Northern" and "Southern" Webbs being one big family is a construction of someone's earlier, mistaken, beliefs. And I have it on good authority (a former Mayflower Society genealogist with many years of research into the subject) that there is no evidence Sir Alexander Webb ever left England, and, indeed, died there. While I admire Jim's work in putting up this site, I feel the DNA evidence does not support the legends of the WEBB family represented herein. Moreover, I believe a careful examination of the DNA evidence would show that this represents more than one DNA lineage -- for instance, the "Bell Buckle WEBBs" (James & Mary Edmondson Webb) match neither Giles nor Christopher Webb. There are even lineages which are shown to be I haplogroup combined with R1b lineages in this site. James, to his credit, put this up before the DNA study began, and I'm sure it represented the best possible research under the circumstances. While I would personally love to be able to claim a relationship with Shakespeare, I do not see the solid evidence (remember that just because someone wrote it in a book does NOT make that "evidence") and I see much to suggest that few, if any, of our WEBB lines are sufficiently documented to make any claims to a particular UK lineage. I hope that as more UK WEBBs participate in our DNA study, we can start nailing down the origins of some of these lineages.
