    3. IMPORTANT - DO NOT DO AS THE MESSAGE BELOW ADVISES - THIS IS A HOAX! This hoax has been circulating for sometime and has fooled many people into destroying certain essential files on their computers. Do not fall for this! Read the material below that I copied from an antivirus site - TREND. If you have already done as this Hoax has advised - you must regain your files that you deleted before you O/S will work properly. Eugene _______________________________________ VIRUS WARNING AND HOAX WARNING I just received a hoax warning about the so called virus SULFNBK.EXE. This warning is a hoax, do not do as the message tells you but delete the message and go back to the person who sent the message and make them aware of this hoax. You can damage the efficiency of your computer if you do as the message tells you. The following is information from www.housecall.antivirus.com Eugene Hoax Name: SULFNBK Hoax Description: This hoax warns against a virus contained in a file called SULFNBK.EXE, that arrives hidden in an email message. SULFNBK.EXE is a Windows System file that is installed in the Windows Command folder when the Windows Operating System is installed. Therefore, the presence of this file does not necessarily mean a system is infected. SULFNBK.EXE is a utility used to restore long file names on the Start menu, when it is replaced with MS-DOS-compatible (short) file names in 8.3 format. For example, the Accessories folder on the Start menu may be displayed as "Access~1" if the SULFNBK utility is not installed. This file is not destructive or malicious, but it can be infected with a virus and could be mass mailed. The virus PE_MAGISTR.A. is capable of using the SULFNBK.EXE file to propagate. If you receive an email with the attachment SULFNBK.EXE there is a possibility that the file is infected. Trend Micro recommends that you scan your system with HouseCall, Trend Micro's free online virus scanner. If you receive an email without an attachment Trend Micro requests that email users delete the message. English translation: Subject: EMERGENCY - VIRUS!! FORWARD TO ANYBODY YOU HAVE SENT EMAIL OR RECEIVED FROM THEM! I found this on my computer, as did several other people I know........please check yours. BB URGENT. A VIRUS could be in your computer files now, dormant but will become active on June 1. FOLLOW DIRECTIONS BELOW TO CHECK IF YOU HAVE IT AND TO REMOVE IT NOW. It was brought to my attention yesterday that a virus is in circulation via email. I looked for it and to my surprise I found it on mine. ..please follow the directions and remove it from yours TODAY!!!!!!! No Virus software can detect it. It will become active on June 1, 2001. It might be too late by then. It wipes out all files and folders on the hard drive. This virus travels thru E-mail and migrates to the 'C:\windows\command' folder. To find it and get rid of it off of your computer, do the following. Go to the "START" button. Go to "FIND" or "SEARCH" Go to "FILES & FOLDERS" Make sure the find box is searching the "C:" drive. Type in; SULFNBK.EXE Begin search. If it finds it, highlight it. Go to 'File' and delete it. Close the find Dialog box Open the Recycle Bin Find the file and delete it from the Recycle bin You should be safe. The bad part is: You need to contact everyone you have sent ANY E-mail to in the past few months. Many major companies have found this virus on their computers. Please help your friends !!!!!!!! DO NOT RELY ON YOUR ANTI-VIRUS SOFTWARE. McAFEE and NORTON CANNOT DETECT IT BECAUSE IT DOES NOT BECOME A VIRUS UNTIL JUNE 1ST. WHATEVER YOU DO, DO NOT OPEN THE FILE!!! -----Original Message----- From: Claire Loyd <cloyd01@bellsouth.net> To: WEBB-L@rootsweb.com <WEBB-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Friday, January 11, 2002 9:53 AM Subject: [WEBB] (no subject) >Dear All, > >So sorry - Bad news: I received a virus through my email, and chances >are you have it too, since you're in my address book.
