Dan and everyone, It is about a day late to inform us about these addresses being so available. .Doesn't everyone think it might be a good idea for the List managers to post a few dos and don'ts before the fact. I would have appreciated an alert about this. Guess I figured that my address is in phone books and other public areas--- if I considered it at all. Thanks for the warning though. Maybe a little protocol about these lists would be a help to all of us. It has been a message to take note from even TV news warning people not to do this , even their kids , no its not really the list owners responsibility to do this , this comes from self preservation and common good sense when you all want something from some one who posts it for the list to ask for always give private data in private. Also it is a common practice for those who advertise to ask people to ask for it in private so the whole list dont have to read * me too* or * I want a copy* etc: I have many lists , I dont read all the messages on them , but this is one of the first times I have seen a thread of personal address's going by in 5 years. I post lots of warnings and advice , but its always after the facts because it has to happen before we can do any thing about it. Its not a great disaster because of web based search engines people can get a lot of your address's, but this way you stand right out in a crowd . Not to likely any thing will happen, but there has been lots of problems on the news and this is the same way kids and other folks have been a target . Remember the new telling us to be sure what the kids are doing and who they are giving information too ? Here you are world wide based, you have no idea who will use your address's for what! There was a story on the net some time back Nancy might remember it , a lady got her computer trashed and all her data stolen by intruders , when I was warned about this going on I came right away . If you want some rules you will have to think safe, and follow what you think is safe Its fine to offer some thing on the list , its recommended to ask for it in private. For instance **I have a book Beatrice Webb any one who is related may ask for lookups , please ask in private to Dan wb@wvi.com ** This is a typical post , yes I do have this book. //////// Many of us have our names and address's posted on lists and websites , many have their family and their newborns posted there too , its not a recommended practice , but lots of people do it . I am not going to say you cant post your address , I am just saying it may not be safe.
