William and All, I haven't done any research on my Webb family in North Carolina. My line moved from Northumberland County Virginia about 1785 to southside Virginia, then to Kentucky then to Illinois. I was aware that Sarah Webb had married John Wilkins, and that her birth record as well as that of her siblings had been filed with her Widow's Pension Application. Then when I got the record of the distribution of the estate of William Webb, listing the same children, I knew this was the same family. And the birth dates all coincided with the children still being minor children when William died. I had read an earlier post of yours where you stated you hadn't done much work in Northumberland Co. I thought you would be interested to know that you can probably take your Webb line back to 1647. That is the approximate year of Samuel Webb's birth. Again I don't know if he was born in England or in the Colonies. I hadn't traced William and Winefred Webb's children because I had determined it wasn't my line. But I kept my notes. I will look again to see if I have anything else that might be of help or interest. Two additional records for John: Nld. Record Book 9, p. 46- 10 Aug. 1772 Possesed John Webb, orphan of William Webb, deceased, with his estate in the hands of John Shearman Woodcock. p. 451- 16 July 1774 - John Webb possessed with amount of cash due to his sister Frances Webb, in the hands of William Angell's exors. These records don't mean that John was still living in Northumberland Co. but he was still working on the final settlement of his father's estate. I will check my notes again to see if I have anything else. Have you looked for military service records for John? Working records from this Parish and County to find the parents of my line above. William Webb batized 17 Sep 1699 son of Jn. Webb. working on John Webb ca 1664 wife believed to be Sarah Cocke? Dennis Lane shared these records back several years ago, when so many questions were in place, found in Tyler's Quarterly in VA. Later DNA results gave us new leads. Cynthia McDaniel wrote a letter last summer to me (Thelma Webb Green) stating similar records) giving dates of all the children, that Dennis had listed. Interesting to see postings at this time from Dian and William. Several working on close connections, everyone's information is needed. All are in touch direct, have not visited with William Webb as yet. Good to see records of Webb and Winifred, couple questions on this one, we can work that out with help. Hello Dian, I have read your posting with great interest. I have been researching this line of Webb's for about a year and half now. Not so much in Northumberland Co., VA but in Surry-Stokes Co., NC. I am about 98% sure that the John Webb b. 1747 (son of William and Winnefred MNU)is my 4th G-Grandfather. Sister Sarah (b. 1751) married John Wilkins (b. 1741) in Northumberland Co. in March 1770. There are some reports that John, William, Sarah and husband John migrated to Surry Co., NC as early as 1773. The earliest land record that I have been able to locate for John and brother William is 3 April 1780 for both men. John purchased 400 acres on Beaver Island Creek and William purchased 640 acres at the mouth of Mountain Branch Creek. There may be earlier records that I have not located yet. The land they owned was in the NE corner of Surry Co., not far from the Rockingham Co. line and Virginia line. Brother-in-law John Wilkins also owned land in this area close to John and William. I do not know at this time if John Webb was married when he made the move from Northumberland Co., VA to Surry Co., NC. It is known Sarah was married and brother William was not. William married Martha Floyd on 17 February 1780. What is not known is where but it has to be in this area of NC or across the border into VA. The marriage date is documented in a PARR Family Bible that was known to have existed in 1951. The PARR's resided in Henry and Patrick Co., VA. Two daughters of William and Martha Floyd-Webb married 2 PARR brothers. John Webb may have married in Northumberland, shortly before his move to Surry, or shortly after his arrival in Surry. I'm just not sure at this time. I am working some leads that his wife may have been named Ruth. I am also working some leads that he married a 2nd time in Dec 1804 to a Susannah PARR in Patrick Co., VA. Susannah PARR was a much younger woman than John Webb, if this marriage record is indeed John Webb b. 1747. John Wilkins is a documented veteran of the Rev. War. I am currently looking into the possibility of John Webb being a war veteran. John Wilkins stated in his pension application that he could not remember the year but in the month of March, he first volunteered as a private in the company of Capt. Charles McAnally and Lieut. William Meredith. It is interesting that the land records I possess for John Webb mentions both of these men as owning land that adjoined the land of John Webb. John Webb gave Power of Attorney to brother William on 21 March 1780, approximately 2 weeks before his purchase of the 400 acres on Beaver Island Creek. There were numerous battles fought in SC and NC during 1780 and 1781. I am looking into the possibility of John Webb enlisting with John Wilkins, leaving brother William at home to tend to the land. William's first child was born in Surry Co., NC in Nov. 1780. The NC Tax Records that I have looked through so far show William but not John Webb. There is, however, a Ruth Webb in 1782 Surry along with brother William. The War was not officially over until 11 April 1783, when Congress proclaimed an end to hostilities. It is the Power of Attorney given to William in March 1780 and the Ruth Webb in 1782 Surry (possibly John's wife??) with William that makes me wonder if John Webb went to War and did not return until close to the end. I have searched the 1786 and 1790 census for this area and can find everyone I look for except John Webb. Yet he is still mentioned in the land records of this area as late as 23 Nov 1795. William Webb had a son named John Webb that was b. 1782. I feel certain this 1795 land record is still the John Webb, brother to William. William Webb sold the 400 acres on Beaver Island Creek that belonged to John Webb (under Power of Attorney) on 1 Mar 1792. The 1787 Tax Records for Virginia show a John and George Webb in Halifax Co., VA. George is mentioned but the tax is being charged to John. There is also a deed record in 1844 listing a Susannah Webb of Halifax Co., VA selling land on both sides of Snow Creek, waters of Crooked Creek. Snow Creek in Stokes Co. was the area that William Webb owned land in. I'm wondering if this could be the Susannah PARR that married John Webb b. 1747 as she was a much younger woman than John. Could she have been selling off the last of their assets?? I currently have numerous "loose ends". I'm working several theories: John Webb was married first to a Ruth, that he fought in the War, leaving brother William in charge of his land in his absence. He returned, keeping his land in Surry, then Stokes, and made a move to Halifax Co., VA. Somewhere along the way, Ruth died and he remarried to Susannah PARR. I have very strong evidence that John Webb had children named George, Sally (Sarah), Ruth (Rhoda) and John (my 3rd Great). I still have considerable work to do on this. I would very much like to visit with you and exchange information. This is just the tip of the iceberg as to what I have. I'm afraid I haven't done any research in those areas, but I have done research in Northumberland Co. VA. I still have a brick wall in Northumberland Co. The parents of my proven ancestors Thomas Webb ca. 1725-1783 and his wife Elizabeth (possibly Taylor) ca. 1725-1785. In trying to breakdown this brick a professional researcher from the area and I decided to do things "backwards". We started with the oldest record books and worked our way forward. One of the difficulties of researching the Webb surname in Northumberland and surrounding counties is that there were several different families lines, who may or may not turn out to be related. Of course there do appear to be some intermarriages. By the time you get to the Mid 1770s there are several families who have sons named Thomas, John and William. Sorting these sons into the correct family can be quite a challenge. So we started with the first records and worked our way down abstracting as many records pertaining to Webb families as possible. I think I have the early lines pretty well straightened out. There are still a few missing pieces. There are still a number of wives who haven't been identified. Then things also get confused because one family's land lay across the county line in both Northumbereland and Lancaster Counites. There are also Webbs born in Richmond County who married into families in Northumberland Co. and stayed there. My brick was as I said earlier is Thomas Webb born about 1725. In a deed dated 14 Aug. 1759, Thomas Webb is purchasing 144 acres, and the deed states that Thomas Webb is a resident of St. Stephen's parish Northumberland Co. If Thomas was born in another county, he had lived in Northumberland Co. long enough to be considered a resident. He lived on this 144 acres until his death in 1783. He did leave a will. His wife Elizabeth lived until 1785, and she made a nuncupative will. The land went to their son William, the other three sons relocated to Mecklenburg/Charlotte Co. VA. Since Thomas purchased his land, we can't trace that back. We haven't found a record of earlier land ownership. I am descended from their son Lazarus and his wife Leannah. Leannah is believed to be the daughter of John Webb and Leannah Basye. The sons of John and Leannah moved to Brunswick and Mecklenburg Co. as well. Now - on to John and William Webb of Surry-Stokes Co. NC, sons of William Webb and Winnefred (unknown). William Webb died ca. Aug, 1762, there is a record of the administration of his estate 11 Aug. 1762. There is also additional court records: Nld. Co. Record Book 6 p. 162 - 13 Sept. 1762 -Division of estate of William - to the guardian of his children (all minors), son William Webb son Samuel Webb son John Webb dau. Sarah Webb dau. Frances Webb This fits with the Wicomicco Parish record for the births of William's children. William is believed to have been the William Webb born 23 Sept. 1719, (St. Stephen's Parish Register) son of William and Elizabeth Webb. This William is believed to be the son of Samuel and Esther (unknown)Webb. William was born 26 Nov. 1693, (St. Stephen's Parish Register). Samuel Webb was adjudged to be 13 years old, 9 may 1660. Esther Webb administered his estate in 1702. Esther died Nov. 1712, and made a nuncupative will naming her sons. Many assume that since Samuel was named as a "headright" of William Wildy in 1662, that he was born in England. I'm not convinced. Many people "cheated" when they filed for land granted by headright. Samuel could have been imported from Maryland, or another Virginia location. William Wildy lived on land adjoining Thomas Webb who died ca. 1658. I do not believe Samuel is Thomas' son. But is he a nephew? I think it is possible that many of the early Webb families were related before arriving in Northumberland Co. Is anyone else on the list researching the Webb families living in the Northern Neck of Virginia before 1800? Dian

Dian

For anyone interested in Webb Reunions in the month of August. The First is August, 6 2006 and it will be held in Jefferson, Georgia. This is a Reunion that has being going on since the early or mid 1920's. In honor or Abner A. and his wife Nellie Mattox Webb. Abner was the son of Elijah W. Webb which was the son of Claiborne Webb. The Hartley's, The Doster's, The Sheridan's, The Dobb's, The Elder's, The Beatty's, The Hulsey's and of course the Webb's are just a few of the descendants of this Family. The Second Reunion is August 20, 2006 And it is held in Jasper, Tenn. And it is better known as The Nonie Webb Reunion, and it is dedicated to all the Webb's of the United States and beyond. Nonie always puts on a great Reunion. The Third Reunion is August 27, 2006 and it will be held in Elbert County Georgia at The Old Antioch Baptist Church. This is a real Old Timey Reunion and it is dedicated to all of the descendants of the Claiborne, Austin, Pleasant and the other Webb's of that era. Infact the one in Jefferson, Georgia is a spin off of this Reunion I am told. For any information to all or any of these Reunions, please e-mail off of the list (thurmondg@aol.com) and I will try and help you out as much as possible with any info. Everyone that is or claims to be kin to any of these Webb's are more than welcome to come and are encouraged to do so. Please bring a covered dish or some refreshments if you can. Also bring any Old Pictures and of those Old Timey Stories to tell about them Webb's. Thanks, Thurmond
His land was on Autry's Creek, also called Otter's Creek in southern Edgecombe Co near the Pitt Co line. Deed Book 6, page 221 December 17, 1791 John Webb from John Brasher 100 acres south of Autry's Creek. Beginning at a gum at the mouth of Hogpen Branch, then up branch to George Vickers line (dec.) corner tree, west to Autry Creek, down various curves of said Creek to first station. Amount paid: 8 silver dollars John Webb's first purchase of land was on January 20, 1791, and although it does not mention the creek by name, it was also on Autry's Creek. Deed Book 6, page 219 January 20, 1791 Begin at a tree standing near Long Pond, then east 363 poles to Arther Lee 's line near Water Branch, down said branch near the creek, up the western prong of the branch to a pine near the new road, then along a new cut l ine to the first station. Amount paid: 120 pounds (John Webb bought most of the land that was a land grant to Simon Lee and much of Simon's father, Arthur Lee's, land. ) John Webb is "not" listed on the 1790 Edgecombe County Census, although Richard Webb and his son, known in Edgecombe County as "Long John" Webb because of his height, are on the 1790 Edgecombe County Census. It is generally believed that Richard Webb and Long John Webb are related to John Webb, Sr. 1763-1842 but there is no documentation to support that. Richard's line "definitely" has Indian heritage and it is said to come from Long John Webb's wife, Martha Annie Lester, who is said to be as much as one-half Indian. Some of their descendants are very dark. Others in John Webb, Sr.'s 1763-1842 line also have been said to have Indian heritage, especially the daughter of John Webb, Jr. whose name was Easter Webb. Easter never married but had 5 children, and she was said to be dark. Some of the later census reports also list some of the Webbs as mulatto. But, the area around Autry's Creek claims many families who say they have Indian blood in their families. According the the laws at that time, I would say that these families settled in the area around Otter's Creek because they were of Indian heritage and settled close together because of this . Early laws said that Indians could not marry whites, but of course, this went on all the time. While it was not uncommon for first cousins to marry each other in those days, these families have what "I" would say is a more than average rate of marrying first cousins, and this practice continued. I have seen Otter's Creek and it still is not a desirable location. The section I saw has cypress knees growing in the water. Not just a few, but a lot. The section I saw was only good for getting water. It will not hold a boat at that place. It is definitely swamp land at that location. Gates County was in the Great Dismal Swamp and bordered Virginia Nansemond Indian lands and many of the Otter Creek families came from Gates County. It is especially noteworthy that the Nansemond Indian lands adjoined the State of North Carolina and Gates County. That part of North Carolina was claimed by Virginia until 1728 when William Byrd and his party of surveyors settled the boundary line dispute and about a 50 mile wide area of land was reclaimed by North Carolina. Not all families coming from Gates County had Indian heritage, but Otter's Creek was apparently was a gathering place for them to settle here in Edgecombe County. Or cheap land. John Webb's wife was Theresa Duke, and while it is said that her father was John Duke, there is no documentation supporting that. However, a Thomas Duke settled in Gates County before 1698 and it is from this Duke line that Theresa Duke most likedly descended. Thomas Duke's land in Gates County (Dismal Swamp) was described as "a Water Oak a Line Tree of Thomas Dukes Land in the main Desart." It is my belief that the word desart, is what it sounds like "desert." A word that describes what is the Great Dismal Swamp.
