    1. Re: [WEBB] (Webb) Book
    2. Irene, I'm not sure the www.familysearch.com entry gave a date. There are a LOT of books there on WEBB or which include WEBB. You might want to look through their library catalog -- search by the surname WEBB. Also, keep in mind many people go out and do research intending to write a book and the book never gets written either. Or a few copies are printed for the most immediate family members and the local historical society and library and they gradually get lost, destroyed or forgotten. Don't give up! If you use search engines like Google, run the same searches again every three months or so -- what wasn't on the Net last month might be there this month! Write the historical societies, genealogical societies, public and college universities in every area in which known family members are known to have resided. What you seek might be in a file folder in their cabinet. And keep asking and posting. Anne

    1. Re: [WEBB] (Webb) Book
    2. Does anyone know when this Webb book was written? My NC family seems to be somewhat disconnected from the lines you see on the Net. My Uncle, born in 1920, remembers someone coming to his home when he was a child, so say between 1925 and maybe 35, writing a book about "our branch of the Webbs". He remembers seeing the book, but unfortunately this is all he can remember. Another cousin remembers her dad telling the oft-told story about the four brothers coming from England - seems to be in every family. Anyway, does anyone know if the book was written early in the 20th century? Irene Webb Dorsey

    3. I am posting below a portion of a message that was posted September 5, 2000. Whoever this person is has a definite link to my Webb line, and I have some information that should benefit both of us (and perhaps others.) If you have any idea who posted this, please contact me right away and let me know. Supposedly, this was some lady in GA. Thanks for taking the time to read this. Hopefully, we can put these two lines together. There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that they are the same. 1. [WEBB] Passports Through AL
    2. I'm no expert, but I'll try to offer what I understand. I hope someone else will offer a more expert explanation as well. Alabama was not a state until December 14, 1819. Prior to that, Alabama had been part of the Mississippi Territory since 1798, until 1817 when Mississippi became a state and Alabama was the ALabama Territory. This land was previously held by France, Spain, and England at various points. In the passport period, the southern portion of what we now know as Alabama was still claimed by Spain as part of West Florida. Moreover, the Creek Indians inhabited these lands. There was also some dispute over what belonged to the Louisiana territories. To get from GA to say New Orleans, one had to have a passport through this "foreign land," just as one must have a passport today to travel to most other nations. My impression is that the passports were issued essentially with a "wink and a nod" toward the Spanish claims and the Creek Indian treaties. It appears to me that, in reality, the settlers who had moved into GA and TN were infiltrating these precincts and homesteading them. You might wish to read about the War of 1812, the Creek Indian wars, the Louisiana Purchase, etc. However, this is a "quick and dirty" summary of the land disputes and the reasons passports were issued. Anne

    3. Thanks for sharing the information Carter. Unfortunately, your William and mine appear to be different. Our family history suggests that William Julius I Webb came from Virginia to Tennessee, Indian Territory. It is said that he owned a large plantation and several slaves. His son (and my GrGr Grandfather, Isaiah (or Isiah as it is sometimes spelled) Thomas Webb was born 13 Jan, 1815 in Bedford Co., TN; at the age of 4, they moved to Gibson Co., TN. William Julius I's elder son Jerry and other son Isaiah Thomas both left home because they did not get along with the slaves and the cruelty associated with it. Isaiah Thomas married Mary Moore on 6 Jun, 1836. Mary was born in Giles Co., TN on 6 March, 1818. They had 12 children and moved to Missouri about 1853. Conflicting stories suggest that either Jerry or William Julius I came to Missouri with Isaiah Thomas. Isaiah Thomas and Mary are both buried in the Davis Cemetery near Grovespring, Wright Co., MO. 3. Mickey According to Edith Wilson Hutton, she did some research on my wife's Webb family in Anderson Co TN for her book, "A Promise of Good Things, Longfield Baptist Church 1831-1981". William Webb was married twice. First to Martha ? and second to Lucinda Ann Reeves, widow of Benjamin Dabney. William donated the land, helped in the construction and later became minister of the Longfield Baptist Church. William died, 23 April 1877, two miles North of Coal Creek (now Lake City), Anderson Co TN. Ms Hutton could find no record of any children by William. He mentions his second wife's grandchildren in his will. Joseph was married to Charlotte Adkins and they had William, Margaret, George Nancy, Richard, Charlotte, Sarah, Martha, Joseph & John. George is my wife's ancestor and he married Elizabeth ? and they had John, William, George, Elias, James, Noah, Nancy, Jane & Delancey. Hope this helps. I have come to the conclusion that Alford being there Your Turner could've been his mother's last name and his father last name is Webb. Call me Crazy. I will be adding all of my info to my website if you'd care to look at it although I am in the middle of rearranging things so I haven't got much on there now. (These Turners could be my Turners too, I have no clue because I am at a brick wall I did get one more name down from my list tho' from the SSDI (aka - social security death index if you know last residence this is very help but i do have his ssn.).Again, Please keep in contact. www.strictlygenealogyimages.org Regards, Paige Roberts -----Original Message----- From: Renedee28@aol.com <Renedee28@aol.com> To: WEBB-L@rootsweb.com <WEBB-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Tuesday, January 01, 2002 6:40 AM Subject: Re: Fw: [WEBB] Wealthy Webb >Emily, I have been long looking for a Webb/Turner connection going back to >18th century, when John Turner Webb was born to Robert Webb. 3. Is anyone familiar with the Webb genealogy: Captain Greene Webb by William Webb or the Webb genealogy by Steward J. Adger? 3. Hello Irene, (Please call me Paige) My webb come thru my Roberts line from Madison Co., GA. and my Turners come thru my Roberts also. I don't know why these Turners are such a pain to find. I have had absolutely no luck with these people. Except my Roberts which I have searched all the way back to the Mayflower being (Gainor Roberts - on the Mayflower). My webb's however is Benjamin Webb from Ga. (not Benjamin Franklin Webb) I will get together with you however, and see what we can come up with. Let's all keep in touch with what we find. If any one needs any additional info, I am connected to Ancestry.Com and would be glad to look anything up for anyone. As far as Turners go (Irene) They are impossible people to find (WHY!) I have been searching on the same man for the past two years. It was like they were wiped away from existance. I know tho' my turners name is James Andrew Alford (hismotherslastname) Turner from Walterboro SC. I have come to the conclusion that Alford being there Your Turner could've been his mother's last name and his father last name is Webb. Call me Crazy. I will be adding all of my info to my website if you'd care to look at it although I am in the middle of rearranging things so I haven't got much on there now.
