    1. [WEBB] GOOGLE searches
    2. You can combine clues ( surnames or places) in what you put into Google search and not have to use the 2 step method. I have put in Tillett Fairfax and gotten not only the family connection of the two surnames but informaiton on Tilletts in Fairfax County ( needed both). Try a maiden and last name and it will give you all the sites with both in them. You even can use 3, as in Chapman Brown Utah for the line of a Chapman daughter who we know married a Mr Brown and went to Utah. Works for me! Catherine

    1. Re: [WEBB] 1847 Rogers Bros. and other old silver
    2. CJ, Nancy and all... I know this doesn't sound like genealogy BUT IT IS! ;-) Family siverware can be one of the most durable and enjoyable heirlooms and give a person a feeling of connection to the family. I KNOW! My 3rd great grandfather, Samuel Blain Wilson gave his daughters and granddaughters siver for their weddings. It was made of melted money, hence the name "Coin Silver." Ours is all a fiddle-back pattern. My brother has Aunt Bettie's, I have my grandmother's, ( engraved in matching script " Bettie" and "Minnie".).. and to my absolute joy when I was found by a double -second -cousin online ( from a posting, ) she has her great grandmother's just like it with EMMA on it! Oh my YES, get it all out and use it. Sterling will last more than a lifetime, and good plate porobably will last longer than many of us will live. It does get a wonderful patina with use. My daughters and grandchildren all have grown up using this silverware, and know the stories behind it and the other pieces, including a 'sugar shell', which the bowl is shaped like a seashell. I also use our family china, which is not that old, ( maybe 90 years) and Mama's wedding crystal ( 1935) n Holidays. I only ever broke one piece, and it was a punch cup...which I dropped onto the punch BOWL, and I was so relieved the bowl survived, I hardly cared about breaking the cup! If the people we love the most can't use our best things, WHO are we saving it for?! Catherine

    2. Fran, I think that might have been me. I have a copy of PART of this which is stamped GA DEPT of ARCHIVES and I have seen it listed in their online catalog. I also have seen the listing on the LDS site library catalog personally. I want to get a complete copy myself. I would greatly appreciate having the contact with the author, if you have her address. Or she can write me at 1801 Pine Village, Houston, TX, 770801, call me at (713) 468-2291 or email me here, whatever makes her comfortable. I had heard she was deceased, but you know how rumors are! She might be surprised to hear it, no? I have a few questions I'd love to ask her! I am just SURE there's a connection between the families she concentrated on and all my Webbs, but darned if I can figure it out! I think the key lies in the land transactions and wills where it is distributed "to my sons." She did a lot of work, and it's amazing book. But I can't figure it out from the little piece I have. I'm hoping she might know something she didn't put it in that will help me figure it all out. Thanks! Anne Webb Nelson Anne

    2. Dear C. J. Williams-- Well the bad news is that at best your spoons are no older than 1862 and may be quite recent, and they are silverplate rather than sterling. 1847 Rogers is/was a silverplate manufacturer. The company began in 1847 as Rogers Brothers in Hartford, CT. IN 1862, they joined Meriden Britannia Company and began using the trademark "1847 Rogers." They are now a division of Libbey Tableware. The trademark was still in use as late as the 1950s. My IMPRESSION is that the trademark is no longer used, but I am not sure. Here are some interesting online articles. http://www.libbey.com/Libbey/LibbeyTableware.nsf/About/AboutUs <A HREF="http://www.knoxnews.com/kns/lifestyles_columnists/article/0,1406,KNS_337_853129,00.html"> http://www.knoxnews.com/kns/lifestyles_columnists/article/0,1406,KNS_337_853129 ,00.html</A>. http://www.silverseason.com/1847girl.htm Google will give you a number of sites to look at if you put in "1847 Rogers." Some include pictures of the patterns, such as the following. <A HREF="http://www.nancysilver.com/patterns/finder/finder_sp_pat.htm">http://www.nancysilver.com/patterns/finder/finder_sp_pat.htm</A> This site gives the original issue date and current status. Regrettably, it does not list the date the pattern was discontinued. You might call or email one of the dealers or a local dealer and find out once you have identified your pattern. Identifying the pattern might help determine the age, as some patterns were only produced for a limited number of years. Be sure to ask your mother when and where she got them. http://shop.store.yahoo.com/silvercollecting/18rogbrossil.html This might be a good place to start some research. It lists reproductions of catalogs. The good news is that, if they have been passed down in the family, they are still a treasure! Anne

I can't hook up either, but pretty sure mine came out of NC. Where I'm really stuck is there is no proof of the father of my Elias. Have it narrowed down to two almost equally good candidates, one long shot and a wild card (like his father died and the two good candidates are uncles one of whom raised him). I keep hoping for a miracle. Perhaps I will find it one of these days -- or maybe you will <G> Anne

    2. Marsha -- Google is a web search engine. The URL for it is www.google.com. It isn't specifically for genealogical use, but I have found it to be unbelievably helpful! You just put in the surname you are looking for. Unless it's unusual, this will generally get you a lot of results. That is where the "Search within results" option comes in. You find THAT by scrolling down to the bottom of the page (it's on the lower right) click on that, and you get another page in which to add a term. The search engine then goes through ONLY the already selected sites, and excludes sites which don't ALSO include this term. By repeating this step (up to a string of 10 words) you can winnow out most (NOT ALL) irrelevant sites and end up with a workable number to look at. If you enter all the terms on the original page, you get sites which have ANY of those words! NOT what you want LOL! Also, enclosing a pair of words in " " will look for sites with that PHRASE. Example "Onslow Co., NC" will look for sites with that phrase, not just sites with Onslow or just Co., or just NC. You have to be careful, however, because people don't always put the whole phrase on their website. "Civil War" however, is a good phrase if you are researching that era. It takes awhile, but eventually you will figure out for your research what are the best terms to try. I always try several combinations, and I repeat the searches every three-four months, because people are adding to webpages and adding webpages to the Net every day. Good luck! Anne

    3. C.J. Starting about 1950 my grandmother started giving the girls in the family a piece of Gorham silverware for each birthday, and an English Bone China cup and saucer for Chrismas. I cherish these, and I USE them. Almost no polishing of the silver if it is used. Grandma died in 1963. A few years ago I added to the silverware to make a set of four. At todays prices I almost had to "morgage the farm". :-) When I have a few of the "girls" over, we use the sterling and each gets to choose which cup and saucer they would like that day. Let mom enjoy her silverware. It won't break. 1. [WEBB] 1847 Rogers Bros.
    2. 1847 Rogers Bros. is one of the names that the International Silver Company used to market it silverplate flatware. There is no silver value to silverplate, only its intrinsic value as eating utensils. There were several other names used by International for their silverplate, which included the name of "Rogers," such as Rogers Bros. Any flatware which has the name "Sterling" stamped on it is likely 92.5% pure silver. The exception being some very old flatware circa 1800-1900 which may vary in silver content from 80% to 90%, and referred to as "Coin Silver" since its silver content was the same as US dimes, quarters, halves and dollars produced from early US History through 1964, which had a 90% silver content.
