I am so thrilled I want to shout to the world. i have searched for years and finally found my grandfather's brothers. They were in the same County (McLennan Co. Texas) as he was all alone. How could I have been so stupid as not to have remembered that family usually move together. There in the same county were his three brothers. Also there was a Alfred Webb born in Georgia in 1829, that had been there before 1860, could this be the son of Coleman Buchanan Webb and who is he? Alfred first son was named Coleman B. If Jack Webb is still on the list would he email me? Mell
Does anyone have any info on the above? Mell
Ian and Helen... have either of you thought about a contribution to the DNA Project? Or have you contributed already?

Hello COUSIN... Maybe we've exchanged information before. It's been a long time since I've spent any time on my genealogy... How many lines can there be that were in Deer Isle in the early to mid 1700s? We must at least share my 6th GGFather. He had two different families. One in Weymouth, MA and one in Maine. He died in Deer Isle, ME and is buried in the family plot in Weymouth, MA. I am a descendent of his son, Samuel Webb, born in Weymouth. Samuel Webb, b. 12/14/1696, London, England. d. 2/15/1785, Deer Isle, ME. M1. 9/15/1721, Hingham, MA to Susan Randall Children: Samuel Webb, Thomas Webb (died young), Thomas Webb (All born in Weymouth, MA) M2. 7/23/1726, Hingham, MA to Bethia Farrow Spear Children: David Webb, Susanna Webb, Seth Webb, John Webb, Eli Webb, Eliah Adams Webb, Elizabeth Webb, James Webb, Josiah Webb, Elizabeth Webb, Ezekial Webb (First one or two born in Weymouth, MA - rest in Maine) There is another COUSIN living in the area of Portland, Maine with whom I've corresponded several years ago. He may look at this list from time to time. To all members of the Webb family. I am searching for a lost relative, Mrs. Margaret Webb, b. abt 1919, probably married to Jack Webb. They owned a property in Detroit, MI until few years ago. Tom Chilton, I may be a cousin. I believe that my James Webb of Shelby County, KY. was the father of Richard Daron Webb that settled in Illinois in 1833. James Webb died 1813 in Shelby County from wounds received in War of 1812. Richard was the 7th child and moved to Illinois with his mother Jane Claxton Webb and other family members. I would love to share and trade any information on this family. We think we might have come from the Julius Webb family in Botetourt County, Va. I don't have much on my James but I do know that James and Jane is our family. My line is: James & Jane Claxton, James & Mary Puttoff Webb, Allen TaylorWebb, Leonidas Webb, Stella Webb Dixon, Dorothy Dixon Watson, Darlene Watson Ellis (me). I live on Webb Road in Simpsonville, Shelby County where James Webb settled in about 1795. I have a 2nd cousin that is my next door neighbor who is a Webb.
I attended the 110th Confederate Memorial Day service today at Camp Chase in Columbus, Ohio. It takes place the first Sunday in June. The closest date to the birthday of Jefferson Davis. There are 2260 confederate soldiers buried there. It is a very neat well kept cemetery in an older part of the city. There is only one Webb buried there. To my knowledge he is not one of my Webbs. I do have a non Webb relative buried there though. John Webb was a member of the 63rd Virginia Regiment. Sadly, he died shortly after the war had already ended. There was a reenactment group of soldiers representing Virginia at the ceremonies and they paid tribute to one of their own. They sprinkled earth that had come from Virginia over the grave. The container of earth was said to be a "Dixie Cup". They had an extra cup of Virginia soil and I spread it over John Webbs grave. If any one would like a picture of this Webb or any one else that is buried there I would be happy to oblige. As an extra bonus if you will send me some soil from his home state I will sprinkle it over his grave. The list of soldiers is on the Web. Do a search for Camp Chase, Columbus, OH. This is interesting. But what most people don't realize about arms is that only the eldest son may use the arms of his father, and only after the father is dead. The other children usually alter the arms of their father in some way. So, for example, the arms of the Webbs of Ashwick in Marshfield, Gloucestershire, England are discribed in the 1682 Visitation to Gloucester as "per fes Gules and Argent a cross flory between four martlets counterchanged." This means: gules - red argent - silver or white fes - military belt or girdle of honour; represents readiness to serve the public cross flory - one who has conquered martlet - a footless swallow, symbol of the fourth son (mark of difference); may signify one who has to subsist by virtue and merit, not inheritance counterchanged - when a charge superimposed over a color and a metal has its tincture reversed The changed version of the arms usually has some resembalance to the original arms of the father. That is one of the ways one can connect family. Kathryn ----- Original Message ----- From: "Moira L. Hello again, everyone -- I've followed the discussion regarding the source of the Webb family name with great interest, and look forward to reading more about it via the DNA newsletter. In the interim, I thought you might enjoy the following info. These notes come from a small poster with the following write-up, also showing the heraldic emblem described at the end. There is no manufacturer shown on the poster, nor any source for the information. Note: this is not the known family crest for David Webb and family theirs being a very different heraldry (art to be found on this disk) and designated "Webb of Woodville". The Webb of Woodville crest features a phoenix, but I don't know all the proper heraldic terminology to describe it. (I've scanned it into the computer, but have only a black and white version, so don't know what the colors were.) There is apparently some possibility that the crest was authorized as early as the Crusades, but that has not been confirmed. So -- acorrding to the poster -- The surname WEBB is occupational in origin being derived from the Old English webba, "weaver". Once everyone was known by a single name but this led to confusion and so an extra name was adopted. Thus, a man named John who was a weaver might be known as John (the) Webb", the additional name eventually becoming hereditary as a surname Early records mention Alger le Webba of Oxfordshire in 1130, Adam le Webbe of Essex, and zElyas le Webbe of Buckinghamshire appear in the Hundred Rolls of 1273. George Webb (1581-1642) was Bishop of Limerick, and the publisher of many theological and educational works. Among early emigrants from England to America was Richard Webb who is recorded in Massachusetts in 1632. James Watson Webb (1802 1884) was an American journalist and diplomat. The arms illustrated may be described heraldically as: Gules, a cross between four falcons or; Crest: an eagles head argent issuing out of a ducal coronet or. Writers of the past have attributed symbolism to the tinctures and charges of heraldry thus, gules (red) is said to denote Magnanimity and or (gold) Generosity. The falcon signifies one eager or hot in the pursuit of an object much desired. Moira L. Mefein [email protected] Why Wait? Move to EarthLink.
