I am looking for information about William A. Webb. I believe he was born March 19, 1839 in Wisconsin, but birth place could have been Illinois. His father was from England. I believe he fought on the Union side during the Civil War in Mississippi as units from Wisconsin fought in Mississippi, and shortly after the war he relocated to Mississippi. In 1878 he moved his family to Texas. Children's names include William, Mary, Lilly, George, Henry, Rena, and Dixie. Wife's name was Sarah Jane Terry. Andy Webb Onslow County NC

He married Wealthy Hutchinson, probably in NY circa 1825. His son's biographical sketch indicates that his father (JAMES)removed to NY at a young age. All of James children were born in Jefferson Co NY, then the family moved to WI in 1849. James died between 1871 and 1873. I have tried to connect him to other Webb's in Jefferson Co, NY without success (cannot prove any relationships). I am trying to locate a male Webb descendant, but this may take awhile. Let me recap what I understand of your family, and maybe we can find something to help. This may all repeat what you have done; this is the way I work when putting together a research project. In a message dated 7/26/2005 12:33:53 P.M. Central Daylight Time, [email protected] writes: I am glad that you clarified that for me (speaking of my non-WEBB cousin). However, if I wanted to trace his mother's mother's line it would give me some information that I could use as well. Correct? If I need anymore help I will let you know. I appreciate it. Carol Carol, I may not be understanding this correctly, so forgive me if I'm not, but if you are speaking of your cousin, his mother would have been William Ernest Webb's sister, correct? So his mtDNA would give you William Ernest Webb's MOTHER's mtDNA as well (and her mother's and her mother's and HER mother's and so on). And yes, it will give you information you don't already have about your WEBB family. By testing various relatives like this, I know of one man who has the haplogroup/mitogroup for all 8 of his great-grandparents and is working on getting it for his 16 greatgreat-grandparents. I am hoping to do much the same -- although I have a couple of "hopeless cases" -- a greatgrandfather who left no sons for example. So far I have gotten three DNA samples from my tree, and am working on getting the other possible ones. FTDNA's handy inheritance chart (see link on their home page, lower right) can be used in two ways. 1. The most traditional way, i.e., you are the person at the bottom and the people above you are your direct ancestors. 2. Place a person of interest at the top of the chart on either side. For example, for me, Jane Oliver (Day?) Washington Maynor could be on the top right. She had only one known daughter, Mary Ann "Nancy" Maynor who married Elias Webb (next woman down in the line). However, Mary Ann had several daughters. Originally, we got a descendant of her daughter Lucinda Jane through Lucinda's daughter Carrie Celeste and Carrie's daughter Janie to Janie's son (the donor -- represented by the man at the bottom of the chart) to test. We have also now tested a descendant of Mary Ann's daughter Mary. Perfect match with one rather unusual HVR-2 difference from CRS. There was some questioning (by a heritage society) of the parents of Mary (no primary sources for this family, but limited candidate parentage, and a terrific circumstantial case that Mary was Elias and Mary Ann's daughter -- multiple secondary sources, land transactions from Elias to Mary's husband similar to one to Lucinda's husband at below market price, physical proximity of Mary's family to the other children of Elias and Mary Ann, etc.) While the mtDNA match cannot PROVE Mary is Elias & Mary Ann "Nancy" Maynor's child, it does strengthen the case. If we ever get the other wives of the other candidate couples tested to eliminate them, the case will be just about rock solid. If you print out a number of copies of this chart you can write in the name of the person you want DNA for and trace down each candidate child. For instance, I want mtDNA for Cordelia Brandon Worsham, wife of William Henry Webb, and my gggrandmother. She had several daughters, but few lived to adulthood. I have the descendants of those who did in my WEBB tree, and I tracked down a living woman (and her sister) and now am working on getting the money together to buy the mtDNA kit for this lineage. I also have charts with Cordelia's father at the top left, and each chart is for one of his sons. I'm working on what looks the most likely son to have living descendants I can find right now. I actually have several charts for this son -- one for each of HIS sons! If that comes up bust, I'll take the chart for the next son and go from there. But these charts help me organize my thoughts. Anne
Anne, Thank you so much for the suggestions. I will try tracing back to my second, third, etc. cousins to see if I can find someone who is willing to "test" for me. My "first" cousins were the ones I listed. I am glad that you clarified that for me (speaking of my non-WEBB cousin). However, if I wanted to trace his mother's mother's line it would give me some information that I could use as well. Correct? If I need anymore help I will let you know. I appreciate it. Carol P.S. Anyone out there, if you recognize any of the names in my Webb family, let me know. Thanks!
Dear Carol, Your cousin whose mother was the WEBB will not work as the WEBB Y-DNA did not get passed to her. Therefore his Y-DNA is whatever surname his father was. You didn't indicate whether he was first cousin or another degree, but ANY living male WEBB with no known non-paternity events in his lineage should work. That is if William Ernest has no living male descendants, and his brothers have none, go back a benerations to Jesse Ernest Webb -- male WEBB descendants of his brothers will work, you only have to trace down the lines. If he had no brothers, did William Jason? Can you trace them forward through time? If not, how about William Henry Webb? Of course it's better for you if you can get a donor fewer generations back, but sometimes we have to take the donor we can find who will agree to do it, no? If you need some help with figuring this out or tracing it, I'll be happy to help as I can. I suggest you try to start with a diagram (organizational type tree) of this family, from William Webb (NC>IN) on down. For me, this kind of "overall picture" of the family tree is visually simple and hand for keeping track of the possibilities. You can number the boxes and put the actual name and date and location information in a key below the chart. It's the PICTURE I find useful. No need to put daughters on it unless you want trace those lines to see if you can find a contact who might have information. Anne In a message dated 7/26/2005 11:43:09 A.M. Deb Mills Dear Deb, I am unaware of any comprehensive listing of the WEBB lineages -- wouldn't that be a godsend to have? That being said, the WEBB Surname DNA Project has identified, off the top of my head, around 20 distinct WEBB lineages/groups many of which have records back to 1680-1710. We are trying to build as comprehensive a list of lineages as possible. We have a participant from the Christopher Webb line, another from the Samuel Webb line, and participants from the Richard WEBB line (or should I say from two Richard WEBB lines). DNA testing for WEBB lines comes in two types: 1. Y-DNA testing, which requires a male WEBB carrying the name with no known adoptions, test tube babies, or other known non-paternity event along the male lineage from the oldest known WEBB to the donor. 2. mtDNA testing which tests the following lineage: Donor<mother<mother's mother<mother's mother's mother< her mother < HER mother etc back through the women. The WEBB Project accepts mtDNA tests for any maternal lineage which has a WEBB wife or daughter along that lineage. Donors for mtDNA may be male or female. Your sister's son will not provide WEBB lineage unless his father is a WEBB. You didn't give your lineage from your James Webb, but if you are WEBB by birth, a brother or brother's son would work. I had to have my mother's father's brother's grandson take the test for my WEBB lineage, as mother was an only child, and her uncles and first cousin WEBBs were all deceased. If you aren't sure where you can find a male WEBB to test your line, write me your lineage and I will make some suggestions. Anne Webb Nelson Administrator WEBB Surname DNA Project

I have a question on the DNA test. First of all, if I or my brother were to take it even though we do not carry the Webb surname wouldn't the test still pick up the female lineage of the family? This is my understanding. If so, then would it not make sense to take the MDNA for the maternal lines that are documented in this long family line? I appreciate your input on this. Thank you, Mary Wyatt Dear Mary You and your brother (assuming you have the same mother) will have the same mtDNA and it will follow your mother's maternal line, that is: You/Your brother< your mother < your mother's mother < your mother's mother's mother < her mother < HER mother and so on back through time. It won't get at the WEBB DNA. What I think you may thinking about is the REST of DNA which is passed down to children -- and gives you your great grandmother' s nose and your great great grandfather's hair, etc. This is not what is tested for genealogy. And what is tested in DNA HAS to be on the two lines Male or Female. If you can get your mother's brothers son or grandson to give DNA he will have Arthur's Y-DNA (if she had a brother or brothers). In your case, I'd also try to track down a male descendent of Wm J (1874, GA - ) or Jack or Thomas (the other boys shown in Arthur's household) to test. Let me know if you have any other questions.
