    1. 1911 Wayne History - Absalom WILLIAMS - James NOBLE
    2. Early History page 68 Town of Salisbury Fifth Term : JAMES NOBLE , Judge . Nothing of interest done . Robert Harvey , afterwards of Hendricks & ABSALOM WILLIAMS of Wayne County were the last survivors of the grand jury . Town of Salisbury The second term of the court .having criminal & civil jurisdiction was held at Salisbury 6-15-1813 - James Scott judge . Four criminal & five civil cases were on the dockett though for some reason it was not shown that any buisness was transacted . JAMES NOBLE 's name was on the docket . In November 1810 the northern part of Dearborn was formed into two new counties - Franklin & Wayne . By this record it appears first court was held 2-25-1811 . JAMES NOBLE [ afterward one of the first U. S. senators from Indiana ] appeared as prosecuting attourney . So I see from this entry that Franklin & Wayne were formed from the northern part of Dearborn . I thought Franklin county was formed first . After War 0f 1812 Joseph Cox studied law with JAMES NOBLE , then one of the U. S. senators from Indiana

Please hit your delete button. For listers who live and research in Indiana, there is a golden opportunity to increase our access to public records and to expand on a patron-friendly atmosphere that exists at the Indiana State Archives. For several years Dr Alan January, State Archivist, has been Co-Director of the Indiana Commission on Public Records (ICPR) with Connie Hume and Judge John Newman. The ICPR is the agency which creates and/or distributes state forms and documents. The State Archives has been part of this agency for a number of years. Governor-Elect Mitch Daniels will select his candidate for ICPR Director. As a long-time volunteer at the State Archives, I feel comfortable suggesting to you that you consider an email to Governor-Elect Mitch Daniel's website on behalf of Alan January's candidacy. That website is: http:///www.mygovmitch.com/nominate.asp Besides including your personal information, you will need to include the following: Dr Alan January 5638 N Delaware St Indianapolis IN 46220-3018 317-253-4071 ajanx2@excite.com Under Dr. January's leadership the volunteer program has grown from a handful to more than 40 volunteers working to make Indiana records available to Hoosier researchers. Several databases have been made available on-line, and I believe several more would be on-line quickly under Dr January's leadership. Researchers could request copies of documents the existence of which is currently unknown to them. The State Archives has vast collections to pique the interest of many. I sincerely believe much progress would be made if Dr January were Director of the ICPR In a day when access to many vital records is being legislated away, let's take a positive step toward disclosure of public records to which we can have access. Now I'll just have to find it and start again. Susan wrote: > I'm wondering if there are other people who are researching > ancestors from this area who came to Indiana. .... Wheeler married Robert Anderson Howard in Wythe Co. in 1854. By 1856 they were in Richmond, Indiana. Robert was the Wayne County Surveyor for about 30 years, a job which his grandson held for another eight years. Doing research on this family, I found the link below to the catalog and newspaper index at the local library. As I remember from a couple of years ago, you can order up to 10 articles. Since I had found many more than that, I went out there and spent three hours copying the articles from microfilm - and much more time at the courthouse, etc. I even located a cousin still living there! Just a couple of days ago I found another Wheeler stopping there briefly on the way to Indianapolis. I have distant Hurst relatives all over Indiana. In addition, my Ashworth family from SW VA tended to move to Preble County, OH, which is just over the line from Richmond. http://mrl.lib.in.us/online.html Bill Hurst To Post a message, send it to: ncnr@yahoogroups.com To Unsubscribe, send a blank message to: ncnr-unsubscribe@yahoogroups.com. 1. Clinch Mountain area of Virgina migration to Richmond, Indiana
    2. I've been reading a biography about The Musical Carter family who came from near the Clinch Mountain area of Southwest Virginia. The Carters were very famous country singers in the 1920s until now, really. They were also directly related to June Carter who married Johnny Cash. In this book, Will you Miss me When I'm Gone? The Carter Family & their legacy in American music by Mark Zwonitzer with Charles Hirshberg, Richmond, Indiana is mentioned. In one passage the authors write, "So in 1911 Pleasant (A.P. Carter the originator of the music group) followed his father's path to Richmond, Indiana to take a temporary job as a carpenter on the railroad. More than twenty years earlier, a Bay's inlaw named John Smith had married an Indiana girl, moved up north, and found work on the railroad. Since that time, the Smiths had provided a pipeline from Clinch Mountain to Richmond, Indiana. Young men from the Valley were always going to Richmond for high-paying work on the railroad." Another place I read that there was a "mass exodus from Clinch Mountain, Poor Valley, and Rich Valley, VA to Richmond, Indiana in the early 1900s". This Clinch Mountain area where the Carters and Smiths lived is close to Maces Springs, "Copper Creek", and Gate City, in Scott Co., VA near the Border of Washington Co., VA and Benhams and near Bristol, VA/TN. Wise County Virgina is also very close to this area. My grandfather Elbert Homer Ramey and his brother Melvin Oliver Ramey Smith were two of these men who left this area around that time and came to Richmond, Indiana. I'm wondering if there are other people who are researching ancestors from this area who came to Indiana. Several of the Carters (who are directly related to the musical Carters) lived in Liberty, in Union County, IN and in Richmond, Indiana. Some of the other names that I have found are Ramey, McMurry, Smith, Taylor, McClain, Addington, Bays, and more. Many of these people are related to one another. I would like to share information with anyone who has family who migrated to this area from these places. Sincerely, Susan Davis

    3. I would like to know where Martin Lundy and his wife Pearl Smeltzer (not sure about the t) were born or where they came from. Their farm joined ours on Road 1 just north of Hagerstown in 1930 and likely before. I don't know when they moved there. Our farm belonged to Replogle before Mose Keever inherated it. My mother came from Grayson Co., Va. and there are a lot of Lundys recorded there. There are Smeltzers in nearby countys. I am trying to see if we are related. Patience
