Sharon; Thank you for your genealogy research. I am sure it will be helpful to many. This is a genealogy website, not a soapbox for real or imagined social issues and commentary. I, for one, am offended by your attempt to turn your genealogy work into a social issues referendum. Please spare us your political commentary and let us have one place where we can go without having liberal social activism crammed down our throats. Hi, Thank you.. I got quite a few responses.. but I'm still puzzled. Maybe you could help? in the census the family I am interested in, is living in Abington Township, Wayne Co., IN. in the 1840 census. I need to know what town Abington township actually became, as the diocese which might have the record isn't listed by a township.... Ok maybe since you do the mailing list I could list more information John Graves and family moved to abington township in 1839, listed in 1840 census, in Jan of 1850 his daughter Mary Ann Graves marries John Gilpin in Wayne Co., IN... marriage records show this. I have reciently gotten the information that they were married by a Catholic missionary. I can find nothing on John Gilpin prior to his marriage, since there is a good posibility that they were married by a Priest, there should be some recording of the information in the church records... I had thought John Gilpin was quaker, if this was so then he would have had to convert to actually marry her.. Right? wouldn't there be a record of his information? Possibly, where he lived, his parentage? something that might help in finding the next generation? By 1850 census John and Mary are living in Hamilton Co., IN where they lived until death. THank you Nelda Pax et bonum! Nelda L. Percival nee Gilpin
If anyone can help Nelda, please write to her at: nelda_percival@hotmail.com Thanks !! Mike P _____ Hi Mike, I need help.. How would I find out the name of a Catholic Church in Wayne Co., IN... Occassionally I mention this to a list - in case the NEWBIES dont know about it . Random Acts of Geneaological Kindness - RAOGK - > This is a great site if you need an out of town lookup . These are all VOLUNTEERS who will do various kinds of free lookups - { in some instances a reimbursement is necessary } . I do lookups for 3 different states from my personal resources & some from the Library in Missouri . RAOGK can always use more VOLUNTEERS . Even if you only have ONE resource -- maybe a cemetery book or a census book for a particular year for a particular county -- any help would be welcome & much appreciated by those who dont have the same . I have been helped by many of the volunteers in other states - so I am just saying -- if someone from RAOGK blesses you with some kind of " help " why not pass it on and share a RESOURCE that you may have . Everyone does not have the time to go to the Library even every other weekend but a resource ' in home ' can be invaluable to someone who is looking for a clue ' to break through a brick wall ' & wont take tht much time to do a look for someone . I am currently INDEXING 3 old , big books tht I have acquired -- to make it faster to do a " look " . Let me tell you -- now tht is work . This will take me months ! I am acquiring a great appreciation for the people who are uploading so much info on the internet & indexing it . Anyway , thought I would put tht bug in youre ear :) in case the Newbies dont know about RAOGK . RAOGK.org -- pass it on sheri writting my family history & leaving a legacy for my children & grandchildren . KING - TOMPKINS - PETTY - TODD - MOORMAN - LAUDETT - CHESHIRE
I've "rescued" an old photograph of Eliza PORTERFIELD BURBAGE which was taken at the Stigleman & Sons Studio in Richmond, Indiana. The photograph appears to have been taken in the 1880's with Eliza looking to be in her 40's at the time it was taken. In addition to her name someone has written "Doc PORTERFIELD's daughter, also Dode BURGOYNE, Dell THURSTON, Tom DOLOFF (half brother), and Belle SMITH on the back of the photograph. More photographs from Richmond, IN recovered along with this photograph belong to the FOSTER, COLE, and CRUBAUGH Families. I've no idea how they might be related, however, the handwritten notations on all the photographs is made by the same hand. I'm hoping to locate someone from Eliza's family so that this wonderful old photograph can be returned to family. If you are a member of this family or know someone who might be, please contact me. Thanks, Shelley
I've "rescued" a group of three photographs which all belong to the FOSTER Family of Indiana. The first is a photograph of Martha FOSTER CRUBAUGH and Mary FOSTER COLE which was taken at the M.H. Watts Studio in Richmond, Indiana. The second surnames appear to have been added to later using a different pen so I'm assuming that those are the girls married names. The first photograph appears to have been taken in the 1880's with the two girls looking to be in their early to late teens at the time. The second photograph has no studio or location noted but appears to be another photograph of the girl identified as Mary FOSTER COLE. This photograph appears to have been taken in the 1890's with Mary looking to be slightly older than the previous photograph, maybe 15 years of age. The third photograph is one of Mary FOSTER COLE, taken at the Watt Studio in Richmond, IN, probably in the early 1900's with Mary likely in her 20's at the time. I'm hoping to locate someone from this FOSTER Family so that these wonderful old photographs can be returned to the care of family. These photographs were recovered along with another photograph from Richmond, IN belonging to the PORTERFIELD - BURBAGE Family. I've no idea what the connection might be, however, the handwriting on all the photographs is clearly made by the same hand. If you are a member of this family or know someone who might be, please contact me. Thanks, Shelley
Hi Listers, I am trying to find the death dates of Nathaniel R. Blue & his wife Sarah. They are buried in Bryan or Bryan's Chapel cemetery. Thanks Linda Blue Dietz jdietz2@woh.rr.com
Many of you may know that the High Street Bridge is one of the favored access routes to downtown Muncie. It connects Wheeling Avenue from the north end of town to High Street, bringing you to all the east/west streets through town...namely Jackson, which runs right past the Muncie Public Library. If you aren't familiar with Muncie, this might not mean much to you. Either way, if you plan on coming into town from the north, via Wheeling Avenue, you might want to consider taking Walnut (south) instead of Wheeling. However, if you really prefer the Wheeling route, you'd want to turn right at the bridge construction, take White River Blvd. west to Jackson Street and turn east (left). Not so bad. For those interested, I've enclosed a link for the article in yesterdays Muncie Star Press. http://www.thestarpress.com/articles/2/033358-9502-004.html For those of you who haven't discovered it, a great map is provided on the GenFest 2005 site. A direct link (below) will give you a great view of the area. http://www.munpl.org/Main_Pages/Library_Hours.htm PLEASE NOTE: Muncie Public Library has several branches, as the map above shows. GenFest 2005 is being held at the main building, Carnegie Library and the Local History and Genealogy Center downtown on Jackson. It's actually the easiest one to find. ******** Also, I am almost done with a list of other interesting places to go in Delaware and all the surrounding counties. As soon as I finish that, Lynne King, the miracle working webmaster for MPL will post it. I'd like to take this chance to thank Lynne for all her help. Shirley Pearson a.k.a. Hi, I've been cleaning out my Internet favorites and keep finding Wayne Co., Indiana sites that I've saved. Please tell me if I am giving all of you things that you already have, but some of these seemed difficult finds for me. This map fascinates me. It is an 1884 interactive map of Richmond, Indiana. You can zoom in and see the buildings, houses, and actual streets in detail complete with little horses and buggys! http://memory.loc.gov/cgi-bin/map_item.pl?data=/gmd409/g4094/g4094r/pm002010.sid&style=gmd&itemLink=D?gmd:15:./temp/%7Eammem_Y28r::& title=The+city+of+Richmond,+Indiana+1884.+ If you have trouble opening this, please email me. It should work fine. Sincerely, Susan E. Davis
Hi, Here is a link to the collection of online books at Morrisson Reeves library. There are several about the history of the area. Caution: the search feature doesn't find very many of the names; you have to look on each page. http://gates.mrl.lib.in.us:8080/index.html Sincerely, Susan E. Davis
Hi, Everyone may know of this, but I was surprised. This is a link to an old Wayne County, Indiana History book on line that has hundreds of names & many short biographies. Many of these names do not come up on a search, at least they didn't for me, but they are in the text. There are other digitized Wayne Co. books here, too: http://gates.mrl.lib.in.us:8080/cgi-bin/docviewer.exe?CISOROOT=/fulltext& CISOPTR=840 Sincerely, Susan E. Davis

County Seat history pg92 It is recorded that it was the opinion of WILLIAM STEELE - a burly citizen of Salisbury - its chief politician , a legislature , a colonel , a " new light " preacher & a cabinet maker - that Salisbury was destined to become another Moscow . I think the " New Light " thing were the ones who broke off from the traditional Quaker s -- does anyone know about this ?
I didnt know if this could be a typo in the book ? pg 169 There was a house at old Newport - two stories with a one story kitchen This was the WILLIAM [ Billy ] HOUGH home during anti-slavery times . Levi COFFIN spoke of it as a " noted stopping off place on the UG. For those interested in this see book " The unnamed Anti-slavery Heroes of Old Newport " by Dr. O. N. HUFF . [ 1905 ]
