On page 23 of "Waitsburg, One of a Kind" second column 'I entered Waitsburg April 30, 1866, coming from Walla Walla in an old lumber wagon, with one of the neighbors, who had been there to trade. As we came in sight of the little village, L.C. Bond, who was in the wagon, pointing with his finger said,"Do you see that white house among the trees over yonder? That is the school house, and that white one a little this way is Anderson Cox's house.--and that is the Burg." I stopped at Mr. Cox's. It was to be my home for a season at least. In P.M., I took a stroll to see the Burg. I found, besides a school house, and near by it, next the bridge, a log house 16 x 20, honored with a rough sign "Entertainment". This was the Hotel. It has two rooms, kitchen and dining room. Mr. Cantonwine, proprietor, family consisting of a wife and four children.'...written by Dr. N.J.A.Smith who came to Waitsburg to take charge of the school, at that time only a year old.
