(Jackie) Johnson, well-known Dayton pioneer resident, died April 3, following an illness of several months. Funeral services were held at the Christian Church Monday afternoon with Rev. Earle C. Miller of Clarkston, former pastor of the church, officiating. For 41 years Mr. Johnson was maintenance man at the Dayton schools. All the kids who passed through that institution in those years well know “Jackie,” as he was known by all. He has said that his reward throughout those years was the mutual friendship he had with the students from the first grade to the high school seniors. Irvin F. Johnson was born at Mapleton, Kansas, July 29, 1875. As a young man he came west in April, 1890, and March 4, 1897, was married in Walla Walla to Sylva Vinson. In September, 1907, the family moved to Dayton and a year later took the position with the schools which he held until he retired in July, 1949. Besides the wife he is survived by three sons and five daughters, who are: Clarence Johnson, Seattle; Mrs. Herman (Nellie) Johnson, Omak; Cloyce Johnson, Dayton; Mrs. Milton (Zelda) Johnson, Everett; Mrs. Clarence (Lena) Laughery, Omak; Lloyd Johnson, Seattle; Mrs. Henry (Viola) Breiner, Dayton; Mrs. George (Loris) Wale of Walla Walla. Twenty-two grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, a sister, Mrs. Mary Buzzell of Conrad, Montana, and several nephews and nieces, and a host of friends are also survivors. Pallbearers for Mr. Johnson were Herman Johnson, Milton Johnson, Clarence Laughery, Henry Breiner, George Wale, all sons-In-law, and Jack Johnson, a grandson. Flower bearer was another grandson, Warren Johnson. Honorary pallbearers where all grandchildren or husbands of grandchildren, and were Virgil Johnson, Billy Epperson, Abbie Johnson, Jackie Johnson, Bush Ulstad, Sonny Laughery, Jack Dieringer, Neal Hann, Kenneth Johnson, and Lee Flerchinger. ----------------------- The Union-Bulletin, Walla Walla, WA., April 3, 1953, page 5 IRVIN JOHNSON, DAYTON, DIES DAYTON (Special) – Irvin F. (Jackie) Johnson, 77, longtime employee of the city schools here, died Friday in a local hospital. Born in Mapleton, Kan., July 29, 1875, Johnson came west in April 1890. He married Sylvia Vinson March 4, 1897, in Walla Walla, moving here in September of 1907. He started work for the public schools in January of 1908 and was retired in July, 1949, after 41 years of service to the schools and the young people of the community. He was well loved by the school children here. Johnson had been in failing health only the last two months and had been ill only the last few days. He is survived by his wife at the home; three sons and five daughters -- Clarence and Lloyd of Seattle and Cloyce of Dayton; Mrs. Herman (Nellie) Johnson and Mrs. Clarence (Lena) Laughery, Omak; Mrs. Milton (Zelda) Johnson, Everett; Mrs. Henry (Viola) Breiner, Dayton; and Mrs. George (Loris) Wales, Walla Walla; 22 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Mary Buzzell, Conrad, Mont., and several nieces and nephews.
