Union Bulletin, Walla Walla, WA, Monday, Oct 23 1989, P. 5 Lawrence Tharp Lawrence D. Tharp, 91, of 616 S. Second Ave. died Oct 21, 1989 at the Veterans Administration Medical Center. The funeral will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at Herring Funeral Home Chapel, 315 W. Alder St. The Rev. Don Gibbard of the Central Christian Church will officiate. burial will follow in the Elks Rest section at Mountain View Cemetery, 2120 S. Second Ave., with a ritualistic service conducted by BPOE No. 287. Memorial contributions may be made to the Tall Elks or Shriners Hospital for Crippled Children through the funeral home. Tharp was born March 5, 1898, in Athena to Beverly D. and Eura Madole Tharp. He attended schools in Athena and graduated from Pendleton High School. He joined the U. S. Marine Corps during World War I and re enlisted during World War II. On Sept. 20, 1940 he married Wanna F. Dickerson in Reno, Nev. Upon his return from the service, the couple made their home on Second Avenue in Walla Walla for more than 40 years. Tharp went to work for Snyder's Bakery as a salesman and retired in 1963. Mrs. Tharp died in 1967. Tharp, whose hobbies included bowling and flying, was one of the first pilots to fly an open cockpit lane in the Walla Walla Valley more than 65 years ago. He was a member of the Central Christian Church, Retreads of World War I and World War II and the Washington State Generals, a 50 year member of BPOE NO. 287 and a former member of the VFW. Tharp is survived by a sister, Lulu A. O'Conner of Walla Walla; a niece, Marie E. Miller of College Place; and numerous other nieces and nephews.
