Fire at Washington State Penitentiary by Ruth Steele (Transcribed from the Pacific Telephone Magazine, November 1926) Walla Walla had a sensational experience on September 3, (1926) when a fire broke out in the main building of the Washington State Penitentiary. At 5 o'clock in the evening the fire started in one of the ventilators and so quickly spread over the building that the entire institution was threatened. The sounding and resounding of the fire alarm told the people of Walla Walla that a fire of a tragic nature had started. It was not lacking in the usual characteristics of such an event, for the cars that soon gathered numbered nearly a thousand, requiring officers to manage the congested traffic and mounted police to control the surging crowd on foot. The outbreak of the fire first brought forward the question of guarding the prisoners, who were all in the dining room at their evening meal, rather than that of extinguishing the flames. The first impulse was to remove them to the ballpark which is located near the center of the penitentiary grounds and is surrounded on four sides by an 8-foot wall. Here, after being arranged in uniform order, they were easily guarded from the walls and watch towers. As it was not long before darkness began to fall, the Pacific Power and Light Company was summoned to wire the walls temporarily for large floodlights which lighted the whole court. This prevented still further the escape of convicts. The fire, according to early spectators, which seemed to burst out over the whole building at once, was burning so rapidly when the fireman arrived that they soon saw the uselessness in trying to extinguish the flames, so their efforts were turned to saving the adjacent buildings. This, in itself, was a formidable task. The cell block, consisting mostly of frame-work, was soon destroyed, leaving 975 prisoners shelterless. Later it was rumored that the disaster was not accidental but was deliberately planned, and that it was originally intended to be a much more serious affair. Only a break in a fuse, prepared by convicts, prevented a destructive fire in the license plate mill. It was interesting to note the variety of sentiments uttered by the inmates. Some were joyous while others actually seemed sad, probably due to the fact that the prison is the only home some of them know. One old man lamented the loss of several beaded bags he was just finishing and which he intended to sell in order to supply himself with smoking tobacco.

On page 23 of "Waitsburg, One of a Kind" second column 'I entered Waitsburg April 30, 1866, coming from Walla Walla in an old lumber wagon, with one of the neighbors, who had been there to trade. As we came in sight of the little village, L.C. Bond, who was in the wagon, pointing with his finger said,"Do you see that white house among the trees over yonder? That is the school house, and that white one a little this way is Anderson Cox's house.--and that is the Burg." I stopped at Mr. Cox's. It was to be my home for a season at least. In P.M., I took a stroll to see the Burg. I found, besides a school house, and near by it, next the bridge, a log house 16 x 20, honored with a rough sign "Entertainment". This was the Hotel. It has two rooms, kitchen and dining room. Mr. Cantonwine, proprietor, family consisting of a wife and four children.'...written by Dr. N.J.A.Smith who came to Waitsburg to take charge of the school, at that time only a year old. He lived along Splatter Creek, on the way to a small community that was called either Jockey or Clear Springs In Greene Co. TN. Jim had the only car back than an was so-to speak the taxi for families in the area. I was 5 or 6 when I took my first ride with him to Greeneville, TN. Also, he took families that were sick to the doctor (nearest) office in Limestone, Wash. Co. TN. Families in the area were without lights, autos, only horses & wagons, raised tobacco crop (money crop), home garden veggies, fruits, raise own beef cattle, milk cattle and chickens & hogs for eggs, milk, poultry and meat. That was real depression era time. When we left Splatter Creek for a small community called Chuckey we lost track of Jim & Lizzie. I suppose they are buried in a cemetery in or near Walla Walla. My paternal aunt Sarah always believed she was born in Walla Walla in 1898, but said she never could find a birth certificate. I asked for a lookup from the county health dept. several years ago when I was a new researcher. The clerk there told me there was a record, so I sent for it. It didn't come and didn't come, so I talked to the clerk on several occasions. She told me she was overwhelmed and working the jobs of 3 people. She also said those records are in a box in a warehouse somewhere away from her office. I guess I bugged her way too much, because after my last call she finally sent me an abstract or index for the record. Now that I've been doing this for some time, I realize that the wait really wasn't that long and that I should have refrained a lot longer than I did from calling this poor woman. The abstract doesn't tell me much although it has a street address for the birth. I have come to believe that the birth was somewhere else, possibly in another state altog! ether - NY. Sarah applied for her SSN in 1940, for which she had to have a birth record. I wonder if she got a delayed birth certificate then based on what she was told, also if it then would have pertinent information. If it is an actual real time birth certificate, that would help too since I would have them placed for that day in time at least. I would like to get the complete record but don't know how to go about doing that. Does anyone have any idea? It took me 50 years to find this aunt and she was gone by that time. My father was long gone too. This family was very fractured and the children evidently strewn all over the country. I didn't even know 6 of the children existed until I started research about 5 years ago. Their mother gave false information whenever possible, both to her children and to official records, but the original birth certificate would at least have to be right as to place. I have had a very hard time tracking this family's movements. When I did connect with Sarah's family, her life story was completely different from my father's life story and those stories are mutually exclusive. We still don't know whose version is true, if either, or possibly bits of each. The address of birth on the record I did get is 222 Boyer Ave., Walla Walla. I would also be interested to know what was at that address in 1898. If anyone can help with that also, I would be most pleased. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Loreen Wells
