Their source for this information came from the Newsletter of the Wisconsin Heritage Tourism Program "Visitors and residents of of Shawano and Menominee Counties have the opportunity to learn about Wisconsin history through new interpretive signs. Each of the 13 signs highlights a local event or site important in the development of the area. The 24" x 36" aluminum signs were purchased through grants from the Wisconsin Sesquicentennial Commission and the Shawano Community Foundation. The signs feature interpretive text, a reproduction of a historic photograph or drawing of the site, and logo of the From The Piners to the Present Heritage Area. "The 13 signs will be installed during the spring and summer of 1999.l The sign sites are: 1. Bethany Indian Mission School, Wittenberg - a mission school founded in 1885 2. Caroline Gristmill and Dam, Caroline - rebuilt in 1878 to serve teh needs of the developing agriculture society. 3. Eland Junction Railroad Depot, Eland - rebuilt in 1913 following a fire, this depot planed an important role in the opening of the northwoods for lumbering and commerce. 4. Homme Home for the Aging, Wittenberg - founded by Rev. E. J. Homme in 1881 to serve the needs of homeless children and the elderly from across Wisconsin. 5. Keshena Falls, Keshena - an important gathering site for the Menominee people. 6. Lyndhurst Train Wreck - located along the Mountain Bay State Recreation Trail the site marks a 1912 derailment. 7. Lutheran Indian Mission, near Gresham - this building served as the first mission to the Stockbridge-Munsee Band. 8. Menominee Tribal Enterprise Lumber Mill - a standing mill that serves as the foundation of the tribe's sustained yield forestry program. 9. Shawano Sawmill, Shawano - located in the Shawano County Heritage Park to mark the site where the first sawmill was built in 1843. 10. Stockbridge-Munee Mohican Historical Village, near Bowler - site features an authentic reproduction of Stockbridge-Munsee Mohican village life. 11. Theodore Buettner Flour Mill, Caroline - restored mill built in 1878. 12. Tigerton Historic Park, Tigerton - collection of four original buildings dating back to the early days of European settlement. 13.
