Hi Marsha One suggestion for your WI Research Trip - You may want to consider paying a visit to the University Archives at the University of Wisconsin - Green Bay. The Area Research Center's have a lot of very interesting archived information; the University of Wisconsin at Stevens Point also has an ARC and I believe that thier area includes Waupaca, and Shawano Counties. Green Bay covers Brown & Outagamie among others! I recently attended a genealogy seminar and had an opportunity to a session titled "From Courthouse Basements: Public Records Treasures" by Debra Anderson. Debra is the Director of the ARC at UW-GB. She was a wealth of information and thanks to her have picked up a few new research *tricks* - did you know that part of the county clerk's records includes "Poll Lists". Every April and November of every year, a list was compiled of every person eligible to vote? Definatley helps fill in those missing census years... I can't guarantee to the accuracy of this information but this is what I have: Area Research Center Green Bay - Debra Anderson 414.465.2539 Hours: M, T, Th, Fr 12"30-4:30; W 12:30-5:00, 7:00-9:00 Year round email: andersod@uwgb.edu Area Research Center Stevens Point - William Paul 715.346.2586 Summer Hours: 8:00-12:00 Additional Hours "To Be Determined" email: wpaul@uspmail.uwsp.edu Have a great vacation and happy hunting! Does anyone know the whereabouts of the Wausaukee, Marinette, WI Catholic Cemetery? Also, if anyone knows the name of the Sexton/caretaker of the cemetery, I would be most appreciative.
Ack! I forgot to plan time to go to the Oconto Co. Courthouse! Arrgh! Now where can I fit that in? Hmmm. Maybe before I head down to Green Bay? Maybe my followup day? Maybe head there the first day in? *sigh... Hi everybody! OK, thanks to the help of a number of people on this list, we're going to be staying at the Holtwood Campgrounds (we got a river site!) from July 23-29. Hubby's already agreed that I get to leave after breakfast & don't have to be back til dinner! (Hey, he does it 51 weeks out of the year!) The 23rd, we're pulling in, so probably won't be able to do anything except get set up & oriented. Maybe I can drive to Abrams, where my grandmother grew up, & look around. The 29th, we're pulling out, so that day is out too. So I really only have 5 days, 4 if you figure Sunday, when nothing's open. Maybe I'll hold Sunday open for seeing Uncle Garth & Aunt Jen in Shawano. ;-) They'd kill me if I didn't come by! This is what I'm planning: 1 day for wandering cemeteries Riverside - any Ashley/Asselin's St Benedict's in Suamico Brown Co - Peter & Harriet Ashley Flintville cemeteries, there are 2. Hi, I'm new to the list. Looking for an address or phone# for St. Patricks cemetery. Researching surname HOGAN, lived in Lebanon T, Waupaca Co. Also does anybody know which newspaper to look for an obit for Dennis Hogan died 1887 and Margaret (Leavy) Burns Hogan died 1890 both buried in St. Patricks cemetery??? dave
I just subscribed to this mailing list and would like to know if anyone has information on the surname SCHOENICK. There are many in Shawano County. Thank you for your help. Corinne Schoenick iconium@snet.net
To all fellow researchers in Oconto County, This is my second post to this list. Seeking information on my grandfather Joseph CZEKAJ who farmed just outside of Lena from 1902 until he died in 1922. His wife`s name was Julia SZELI. They had four children: George, Andrew, Rose and Pauline. George was my father. Andrew took over the farm after his father`s death. His wife`s name was Helen and they had two children, Stanley and Marcella. Andrew spelled his surname Checki and moved to Green Bay after selling the farm in the 1960`s. He died in 1987 in green Bay. Am trying to find out if his widow Helen is still alive in Green Bay. Also trying to locate anyone who would have info on Marcella Checki`s husband Louis PAWLAK who died in 1971, as I am also trying to locate Marcella. Anyone having any info on these surnames please contact me. I would appreciate it. Thanks Roy Czekay
Alice, Yes, this is true. Marinette Co was part of Oconto Co. until 1879. The County seat is at 1926 Hall St., Marinette 54143. Earliest births on record - 1874; deaths 1879; marriages - 1878. So, 1863 would probably be Oconto. Oconto County Courthouse, 301 Washington St., Oconto, WI 54153 Telephone: (414) 834-6807. Happy Hunting! Hi everybody! We are planning a camping trip to WI this summer. I'm planning on spending the time (one week) doing research. My main areas are Oconto Co. -- Abrams; Brown Co. -- Suamico; and Waupaca Co. -- Manawa. I know that Suamico & Abrams are not that far from each other, and I have cemeteries to walk in that area, but I do want to get over to Waupaca Co., hopefully to look for local histories (Little Wolf Township particularly) that might mention my ASHLEY/ASSELINs. I'm thinking we'd be better off camping in Oconto & then I could take a day trip over to Waupaca? But if all I've got is 1 day, then I really need to target my research destinations. What do you think? So, my questions are: Would I be better off looking for a campground in Oconto or in Waupaca? How long does it take to drive between the areas? What is my best resource library in Waupaca Co.? And is there one that is particularly good for Town of Little Wolf, or Manawa? Recommendations for campgrounds are also needed! We need one that has swimming and fishing and is family-friendly, since we've got 4 kids, 11 to almost-15. What's your favorite, and why? Oh, we'll be tent camping, so an RV-only is out. We'll need to make reservations this next week, I'd think. Thanks for any help you can give! Happy Hunting!
