Hi Anne, I read your message about Chater/Cheyes. I could not find these surnames or varinats in Tanguay, Lussier/Drouin, or Jette's book. I they are French names, I am sorry I could not find anything near where these names would be that resembled CHATER/CHEYES. Any suggestions of different spellings/aliases I could look up for you? Hi, Just had a "Christmas in August" mail day--I received a reply from the Diocese of Green Bay and my SAWYER line quite possibly is CHAYER/CHEYES instead! Anyway, one of the family members I am looking for in the Little River Township of Oconto, was married at St. Peter's Catholic? in Oconto. Does this parish still exist and has anyone accessed their records? And the moral of the story is not to give up--as I had almost on this family line. And I was so certain it was Sawyer--but they must have "Americanized" Chayer! On to the Louiselle Index!! Thanks, Anne
Please direct all replies to : jwest@microassist.com ****************************************************** I am searching for information on a possible relative of my grandfather August WEST. I believe that my grandfather was born in 1893 in Germany. My grandfather (WEST) emigrated from Germany to the United States in 1903 at the age of 10. I believe his port of entry to be New York and he entered sometime in the Fall of 1903. My grandfather mentioned that he was accompanyed by an uncle, Edward SHOEN, when he came to the United States. I am looking for the family of Edward SHOEN and any information that they may have on the WEST family.

Looking for information about DUCHARMs in Town of Little Wolf, Waupaca Co. Marriage records for Joseph, Louis & Eliza give parents as Joseph DUCHARM & Millie/Melie MARSHALL/MARCEL/MARCEIL, and birthplaces as Essex Co., NY, which is where the BOZILEs & DESCHENEs were from. My Harriet BOZILE's maiden name was DESCHENE, but is listed on several of her childrens' marriage records as Harriett MARSHALL. Are Joseph & Millie (MARSHALL/MARCEL/MARCEIL) DUCHARM related to Harriett (DESCHENE) (MARSHALL) BOZILE? By the dates, it looks like he may be her brother? But then how does the MARSHALL name fit in for both his wife & his sister? Any help untangling this gratefully appreciated! Happy Hunting! Hi everybody! I'm back! It was a good trip! We didn't stay at Holtwood after all (too urban), but went up to Kelly Lake (Holt Park). Let me recommend it highly! But that added another 1/2 hour to my driving time. The manager's mother is a researcher too, TREVORs, and gave me an outdated phone directory. No TOUCHETTEs, 1 ASHLEY, all the way up into Menominee Co., MI. Thanks to Kathy Barlament & Barb Buboltz for their great help & assistance! Christy Kallies broke her toe & wasn't able to join us. How're you feeling, Christy? We need a map of Oconto Co. which shows where the cemeteries are. Otherwise, you'll go past them on the highway at 55-65mph, with no idea how to get to them! Thank goodness for Kathy! Else I'd never have found some of them! I still don't know where Ann PORTER & Joe TOUCHETTE got married or where Gilbert ASSELIN/ASLIEN/ASHLEY died, but I found a lot of 'collateral' info. Tons of PATENAUDEs (& var.) all over Oconto & Brown Co. And I saw the latest query on the Oconto board for LaFORTUNE -- they're all over the place too! There's even a LaFortune Realty currently in operation. I need at least another week in Green Bay. (And a trip to Marinette) I only got 1hr 10min in the Brown Co. Courthouse records room. That's all they'll allow you if there are other researchers waiting. That *just about* got me thru the indexes for all my surnames. You can go back out & sit and wait for another turn, but by then it was about time to meet Barb for lunch. After that, I spent some time at the Brown Co. library. (Beautiful library!) FYI, the microfilm *is not* in the Local History & Genealogy room, but down in the magazine section. If I'd known that to start with, I would have been down there waiting for the LH&G room to open. As it was, I had to leave earlier than I would have liked to get to Allouez Cemetery for pix of my ancestors' headstones. The ARC in GB wouldn't let me stay over. I promised I wouldn't hurt anything, but.... ;-} Here's another hard part -- the ARC and LH&G room are open the same hours during most of the week! Waupaca Co. is *gorgeous*! And the County Courthouse has plenty of space for those large indexes and books. Everybody at all the courthouses were courteous and helpful. Anybody planning a trip, don't feel at all reluctant to go and ask to see the old records. In Oconto, they hand them to you, point you at a table with microfilm readers, and leave you alone. In Waupaca, they let you into the room, show you where everything is, and leave you alone. In Brown Co., the room is very small, and the clerks are trying to work around you. They're very friendly, but you get the impression you're in their way. Then there's that hour time limit... I'll post my "new" requests for information in another message, since this one is getting kind of long. Looking for info on Frederick Phillip Wagner who died in Oconto Falls in 1899. He was the town blacksmith and after his death his wife Christina turned the family homestead into a boarding house. She was known for her kindness to Indians and hobos, and her wonderful cooking...but NOT for her housekeeping. Frederick's children were: Rudolf, Fred, Louis, Alma, Phillip, Meta, Paul, William, Della Meta was County Clerk and Justice of the Peace in Oconto Falls until her murder July 4, 1957. Her sister Della married Ed Wolfram, Together Ed, Della and Meta were instrumental in the formation of Chute Lake and large property owners around the lake. Any info on this family would be appreciated. Especially interested in what happened to Willian, Paul, or Louis.
D. Patnode: Are a bunch of Patenoude/Patanoude records for births deaths marriages at Oconto County Courthouse in Oconto, Wisconsin. Same records are available at UWGB special archives. Since you have UWM in your address, I would assume your at Milwaukee, maybe you can get the archives there to get you copies. Also, there are several headstones for Patenoude etc. at the Oconto St. Peters and St. Josephs Cemetery. Check with Marsha (email her off the Oconto Gen web page) for anything she saw when she was up here with me. She wrote down some things she spotted and I did also, will email them when I find them, lots of paper! Katbarla@itol.com

Good Monday morning to you all. I am researching the PATNODE (and variant spellings) family in WI and am seeking any information on the following family: Archie PATNOUDE, b. Mar 1864 in Canada working as a day laborer and living in Oconto, Oconto, WI in 1900 and 1920 per the censuses for those years. Married c. 1894 Louise ?, b. Feb 1875 in Canada and also living in Oconto, Oconto, WI, in 1900 and 1920 per those censuses. According to the 1900 census the parents of both Archie and Louise were born in Canada. Children of Archie and Louise were: Lucinda b. Nov 1895 in WI. Sinea (sp?) b. Sep 1897 in WI. Nelson b. Jul 1899 in WI. Samuel b. c. 1902, probably in Oconto, Oconto, WI. Irvin (possibly also Ervin) b. c. 1903, probably in Oconto, Oconto, WI. Edmond b. c. 1905, probably in Oconto, Oconto, WI. Elizabeth b. c. 1907, probably in Oconto, Oconto, WI. Lucian b. c. 1909, probably in Oconto, Oconto, WI. Vernica b. c. 1912, probably in Oconto, Oconto, WI. Melvin b. c. 1916, probably in Oconto, Oconto, WI. The above information on Lucinda, Sinea (sp?), and Nelson comes from the 1900 census. The information on the remaining children comes from the 1920 census. I am assuming these latter children were probably born in Oconto, Oconto, WI, because both the 1900 and 1920 censuses shows their parents living in that locale at those times. Any additional information would be greatly appreciate if anybody has any they would be willing to share. This surname has over a dozen variant spellings including: PATENAUDE, PATNAUDE, PATNOUDE, PATENOUDE, PATENODE, PATNODE, PATNOD, PATNOED, PATNOE, PATENOE, PATNO, PATNUDE, PATNOTE, PATNOTTE, and PEDNU. I am aware of individuals living in Oconto County at present with one or more of these spellings. I have not yet contacted any of them hoping that I may be able to obtain information more quickly and easily via the listserv. Again, any additional information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Hi! With this message I am trying to get help in my quest for Belgian descendants in your area. I am living in Belgium, and am doing research on the emigrants from a specific area in Belgium, the Waasland, to the United States and Canada between 1830 and 1950. If you would like to know more about this project, I invite you to my web site at http://www.ping.be/picavet/ In the frame of this research, I have already visited Wisconsin on two occasions, in 1995 and 1996. Places I am "familiar" with are Milwaukee, Green Bay, Aurora, Ashland, and Superior. This is not a coincidence: most of my people initially settled there. Most of them emigrated between 1850 and 1910. According to the 1990 Census, Wisconsin had one of the largest concentrations of Belgian descendants in the United States. ---------------------------- Belgian ancestry reported as: State Population First Second Single -------- -------- ----- ------ ------ Michigan 9,295,297 37,442 22,824 18,966 Wisconsin 4,891,769 36,822 25,681 19,133 Most of them can be found in Brown 194,594 16,696 11,407 8,310 Kewaunee 18,878 4,825 1,431 3,251 Door 25,690 2,864 1,248 1,844 Milwaukee 959,275 1,389 1,381 597 Outagamie 140,510 1,303 1,500 543 Oconto 30,226 1,081 736 719 Dane 367,085 761 662 293 Manitowoc 80,421 721 702 342 Marinette 40,548 666 654 340 Waukesha 304,715 639 690 225 (pls let me know if you are interested in this information for other counties) Since it will be difficult to know for anyone not familiar with the families from my area, if a specific family is fitting in my project or not, I am actually looking for any Belgian family in your area. In return, I will also assist any Belgian descendant to trace his roots in Belgium. With this in mind, I have set up my web site, which is containing complete guidelines for anyone starting to trace his Belgian roots. Moreover, I recently started a mailing list especially for these same researchers: BELGIUM-ROOTS-L, also hosted by RootsWeb. It would be nice to hearing from you.
