    1. [WauShaOcon-L] Census for 1885 & 1995 Waupa County & in what county is Floral Hill Cemetery
    2. Etta M Howard
    3. Hello, Is Floral Hill Cemetery located in Waupac County. My ggrandfather is buried there and I have been hunting for his descendants in Octagamie County on the 1900 census and none was found. My grandfather, his children and his brothers and sisters were living in New London at that time, and should have been on the census. My grandfather also had land in Lincoln and Oneida in 1886. Should I look at the census for all of WI to try and locate the descendants? Are there records of the 1885 & 1995 census for Octagomie County and Waupac County? If there are records for 1885 & 1995, they may help me to pinpoint the time that two of his sons died and when the youngest was born. In the 1890 census none of the children were in the household. Also, can I get a birth certificate if I don't know the exact date of birth, and I am not sure of the county. The family was living in Bovins township at the time of his birth. Please excuse if this is not the proper format for this group. I am new to genealogy--seven months. Thank you. He lived in Lena, owned the Smits Hotel or Maple Valley Hotel, which was sold to Able Netzer in the 1940's. It later burned down and a gas station is on the corner. He died around 1933. He was married to Helen Mathey. They had four children Lilllian, Edna (my mother) Howard and Jack. I think he had brother and sisters that lived in DePere or Oconto. If I could even find something about my grandmother. She had brothers and sisters. But Anton Mathey lived in Lena and owned a store. He had sons Peter and John and daughter Stella who married R.Rosery(spell?) I also was born in Lena in 1931 but only visited every summer and lost track of everyone when my grandmother moved with us. I have many fond memories of Lena and all the friends I made there and wonder about them too. I live in Pittsburgh, PA so don't know how to contact anyone for information. Any help would be appreciated. --part0_903916144_boundary--

    3. I looked in the latest area-wide phone book of the area, and came up with a big list of Webers. There is one extremely close to Stiles that might be of some value to you. Dick L. Weber 5337 Hwy 22 E Lena WI 54139 920-834-5103 The rest of the Webers were kind of spread out on an arc from Suring to Crivitz to Menominee and Stephenson MI. Hope this helps. 2. Chris, I have some very old photos of Stiles, including the church (being built and once it was standing), rectory, cheese factory, "downtown" main street (all mud and sand), and the cheese factory. A great uncle's wife was named originally named Barbara Weber and the family apparently owned the cheese factory in the late 1800's. The only sibling left of Barbara has advanced Alzheimer's and is not able to help with identification. I have many related family photos and photo-postcards of the time, and I think they are of this Weber family. They were abandoned once Barbara died in childbirth at age 41 in the late 1930's. There is one couple pictured who was first photographed around the time of the American Civil War, and successive photos of them over the next approximately 50 years. I can only guess that they were the Weber pioneers. It is such a shame to have these priceless pieces of someone's family history, and not know who might charish them. There were many sons in the family portrates, both casual and professional. Some have first names, and the Weber name is occasionally mentioned, but most have no identification. Any help from you or other folk's? Hope to hear from someone, Rita

    3. Yes, there is a cemetary right in Stiles. It is part of the St. Patricks Catholic Church. Part of my family is buried there. To get to it, just go into Stiles itself on County I from 141. Cross the tracks, and take the road to the right. That is County I. Round the curve to the left, and you will see a little church up on the hill to the right. That is St. Patricks. If you take the driveway up the hill towards the church, just keep going past the church and you will run right into the cemetery. 3. JoAnn, If you have any research that falls in Shawano County, I would suggest trying the LDS family history center in Shawano. They have a very complete card catalog of cemetery records, naturalization records, and some death certificate information. I did some research there about a month ago and was very pleasantly surprised at what they had. I think they cover well beyond Shawano Co, but I can't remember for sure. If you're in the area you might give it a try. -------------------------------------------------------- Winston Gadsby wingadsby@juno.com www.geocities.com/Heartland/Prairie/4678 -------------------------------------------------------- On Thu, 13 Aug 1998 00:52:25 -0700 (PDT) WauShaOcon-D-request@rootsweb.com writes: >Hello, all! > >I enjoy reading your contributions to the list - a little sparse now >that summer is here, but that's to be expected! > >I must have deleted by accident the letter about Oconto cemetery >upkeep >- I'm interested in that for the future. Dear Joanne, Other Oconto cemetery record holders are the Ed? Wilde's. They have a huge old book and will not only help you look up names (and may do it for you,) but will let you use the phone to call possible relatives once they know who you are after. They live on Madison. Jerry Bickel is the sextant for the Catholic ceme. out River Rd. I wouldn't recommend going to his place, but a letter might work. He had a REALLY old small book of burial records. I've seen it, but years ago. I'm told all his information is now in the Wilde's book, but.... I'd love to see it again anyway :) Evidently there is an effort to combine the records in Oconto. I don't have his address at my finger tips, but could likely find it for you it interested. The courthouse in Oconto has most records on micro(fiche) - the little film CARDs. It's quick an easy to use. Staff friendly and helpful, but not a lot of space to work. Tax records and plats are all at Green Bay archives - one heck of a great place! A place to try and stay in Sturgeon Bay is a B & B out by White Dunes park. It is north and east of SB about 10-15 min. I haven't stayed, but checked it out and it looked great. A good sitting area below to spread out your records and papers. Holly

I was not allowed to peruse the books, but the parish secretary Rosanne Zoeller looked in the books for my names. When she found one, THEN I could look. She made a copy for me too of the record. Unfortunately she's not real good at deciphering the old script, which may cause a miss or too. I lucked out and was able to determine the name she was trying to read. It was my jackpot too! She's very nice though and even led me to the cemetery record book held by the Wilde's, which led to a 99 year old lady who turned out to be related! This led to... well, you know! St, Joe's is on the NE end of town on Madison St. I don't know their hours, but I ran into her at St Pete's school organizing Bingo, so you may try there if no one is around. HOpe this helps! If you need more, I might be able to dig up a real address for you. Holly

    3. Hello Sandra, Kathy, and Marsha, and all- Thanks much for your help - Sandra, I'm glad you knew about the Cofrin ARC closing from Sun 17th-30th; a researcher friend I was planning to meet there didn't know that I guess - so I'll plan to be there first week of Sept. And thanks Sandra and Marsha for the hours open of various places and how the systems work - I was wondering more about the Oconto Falls Library rather than the Farnsworth, because in the US Library Directory, the Oconto Falls Library states that History is a special interest - so they must have some sort of collection. I will be contacting Pierre's while in Green Bay, - my very special cousin Quentin in DePere - he has Pierre Auto, Marsha - his father Gabe, (deceased) was a genealogist who went to Belgium, and met relatives- he started a kind of exchange visit tradition. Yes, indeed, Nelson was a close relative -My mother was Grace Pierre, daughter of Jules and Marie, who were the Postmaster (and Asst. Postmaster) of Brussels for over 40 years.) Nelson was the son of Frank, Jules' brother. For all who might be doing related lines, I have, (and will do look-ups in- HISTORICAL AND GENEALOGICAL INFORMATION ON OUR BELGIAN ANCESTORS by Joseph J. Pierre and Mary A. Pierre, 2nd ed. 1976 The History contains an account of the 1850's Immigration to Wisconsin - many families individuals and details of life are recounted.( One of my future projects will be to index this book.) The genealogy sections (including charts and lots of pictures) are on: 1. Pierre and DeKeyser 2. Leroy and Mott 3. LeGrave and Meunier 4. Reince and Gerard 5. Pierre and LeGrave 6. Pierre Pedigree to 1734 If anyone would like information, I'd be glad to furnish it if I can - but it will probably have to wait until my return (Sept. 5th) If you e-mail me, I will post your request on my bulletin board so I don't lose you! Marsha, you are posted already, and I'll try to copy some stuff for you. I'll probably still pester you for information once again before I leave! Kathy, I did understand that you are willing to do cleaning and photos - NOT repair!! I have some graves in mind - I have not been able to get good photos of.. The grounds and graves of Evergreen are beautifully kept from what I've seen - this trip I'll also go to the Cath. Cemetery. Sorry to make this a group letter, and not mail each of you individually- Sam, my Maine Coon cat has taken to bringing me chipmunks for pet-presents - I now have two scared little guys chirping to be free, but I can't coax them out! And gotta find those airline tickets! Best regards to all, Joann

    1. [WauShaOcon-L] ADVICE NEEDED RE: RESEARCH TRIP
    2. Joan Levin
    3. Hello, all! I enjoy reading your contributions to the list - a little sparse now that summer is here, but that's to be expected! I must have deleted by accident the letter about Oconto cemetery upkeep - I'm interested in that for the future. Had only a little time in Evergreen Cemetery, Oconto and the monuments needed care. Another thought on that: I know Mr. Peter Stark holds the cemetery records - would the person willing to do monument care be willing to do lookups in the cemetery records? Would the person involved please contact me? Maybe I could speak to her while I'm in the area, BECAUSE... Next week I am leaving Maine for a Wittkopf family reunion in Oshkosh, WI, have a Werth family member coming too!- am really excited, haven't seen my dear family for some years, and there are a few families I have met only on the phone or e-mail coming! (We have been corresponding, having met through Genealogy postings.)Then I will be embarking on a solo research trip in the Counties of: Oconto, Brown, Door, Kewaunee and Manitowoc. Now I need advice---please those of you living in these areas advise me as to: (1) Lodging: I have relatives I am staying with here and there, but need to know of places that are low to medium cost within driving distance of the towns/villages of Oconto/Oconto Falls, Brussels/Rosiere, Algoma/Casco/Sturgeon Bay, mentioned. I don't mind staying in out-of-way places - somewhere I can sit at the end of a day and go over my notes and record stuff, a place that's safe to take my daily walk, that has a restaurant or deli nearby...preferably off the highway. Just need a room with a shower. For Door Co., private house near Brussels would be ideal - also in Kewaunee Co., Algoma or nearby. Two Rivers? (2) Use of Time and Resources: I need to know how to divide my time best between libraries and Court Houses. Especially since I know that the UW Green Bay Cofrin Library has many records available. Is it better to check in there first? I am after Declaration of Intent records, a few Probate records, (Brown and Manitowoc Cos) a marriage and divorce(could be Brown, Kewaunee or Door)-and obits and newspaper articles from all counties. Which Library has more genealogy records - Oconto or Oconto Falls? (3) Can you give me an idea of the cost of records? I know the death certificates have been $7.00 - how about Declaration of Intent and Probate? If you are doing the lookups is it the copy machine charge only? Please all you "veterans" - give me your tips! I'm a first time research-tripper, and really excited about all the possibilities! I'm also taking my back-pack- want to walk a few trails my ancestors used to tred along some river banks - hope they are still accessible! Am meeting a few researcher friends met on Genweb along the way - doesn't it sound great???? I'll be waiting anxiously for your advice! JoAnn Researching: Wittkopf, Werth, Ellman(n), Lemke, Pierre, Novak, Wizner, Wiesner, Wicpalek, Fencl, Homulka...
