Hi all, Am still trying to find someone who might have an uncle, aunt or grandparent in the Lena area that has some recollection of the surname Czekaj, circa 1902-1960. My grandfather, Joseph Czekaj homesteaded a farm a short distance from Lena in 1902. At that time the name may have been spelled Checki. He had 4 children, George, Andrew, Rose and Pauline. Joseph died in 1922 and his son Andrew and his wife Helen (nee Mikuli) took over the farm. They remained there until approx. 1965, when they sold it and moved to Green Bay. They had two children, Stanley and Marcella. Thanks to anyone who may be able to help me in my research. Roy Czekay Home Page: http://members.aol.com/rczekay
Well, I got the dreaded flu that's been going around this area and was unable to make it to Shawano (or anywhere else) today. I should be able to make it there next Thursday, so I will keep those e-mails I've already received, and those of you who didn't have a chance to e-mail me yet, you have another week. Sorry about the delay. christy Kallies -----BEGIN GEEK CODE BLOCK----- Version 1.1 GO d- s+:+ a-C++ U--- P L W++ N+ K- w+ M- PS+ PE Y+ PGP- t 5 X++ R+ tv+ b+++ DI D- G e+ h---- r+++ x++++ ------END GEEK CODE BLOCK------
I'm going to the Family History Center again on Thursday. Those who I couldn't get to last time, didn't get enough for last time, or would like more information based on what I got them last time, please let me know what you'd like me to look up. If you'd like me to look up something for you, be aware that the information there is best for Shawano County with only limited information about the surrounding counties. All of the obituaries from Shawano County are there with an index, so those are easily looked up. Please include all relevant information in your request. My great grandfather Willard EVANS (b.19 June 1869, d.Nov 1947) was the town clerk of Belle Plain from April 1906-1932. I would assume that because he was a public official there would be more information than usual on him. The problem is that I have no idea where to start looking. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Thank you for your help in advance!! Tom Evans Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com

Hi, I think we need to all give a big THANK YOU to Rita for all her effort. With the start of the addition of the 1880 Census she has increased the value of the Oconto Web site for all of us. This is a tremendous effort, and this is the latest of many improvements in the last 3 months. Also, want to say thank you to all that have contributed. All this effort makes the site more valuable for all of us. Every little bit helps. Gloria

Randy, You gave this list (thank you!)---- > Here is a listing from "Guide to the Chuch Vital Stats in Wisconsin" (WPA in > 1942). > These are only the Lutheran churches in Oconto County. Were these WPA volumes filmed by the LDS, and available through Family History Centers?? I plan on searching the AGLL, too..it might be worth it to me to purchase the First American film, as three branches of my family were amongst the founding members....so if there is any "trick" to locating them, I'd appreciate your help. Well, Gloria! We run into each other all over -I'll look for you next in the British West Indies list!!!! My Oconto families are: >From Kreis Randow, Pommern: ELLMANN, WERTH, and WITTKOPF (My father's sister Margaret (b. 15 Oct. 1900- d. 26 July, 1929) married Arthur Matravers; she died in childbirth ( twins, also died.) I know you have Matravers family. Will send you Kenneth Couillard's Obit privately, unless someone else wants it,too...his parents Couillard/Wittkopf were from Oconto, but Keith was born in Appleton, tragically killed in a car accident a few weeks after his wedding in 1992). Belgian Family in Oconto: Alphonse PIERRE, m. Lucy Brazeau, had mill and feed store somewhere by Pecor street in French Town. Would like to exchange information on any of the above names.... Thanks, everyone! Joan (Wittkopf) Levin Ellsworth, Maine
Joan, Was the German Luthern Church in Oconto or Pensaukee. I have my father's baptism certificate in Gernman, year 1907. His confirmation is from Emmanual Luthern, definitely Oconto, 1922. I know later the members ofthis family belonged and belong to Firste Luthern. Where do your German ties come in. Yes, it is me. Gloria Olson
Hi, all.. Thanks to those who are posting the names and addresses of the Churches. It's so helpful. I have a further question about church history in Oconto that I hope you can help me with, too. The story in my family is that all the immigrant branches of the family who settled in Oconto belonged to the First American Lutheran Church. However, there was a rift in the Church membership when the pastor forbade them to belong to the Oddfellows. I have no idea what year this was, or why the Oddfellows were "anathema". Many left the First American, and my grandfather was one who helped build the German Lutheran Church,( which no longer exists,) and his family went there until it closed. (Why did it close?) When the German Lutheran Church closed its doors, many members did not want to go back to the First American, so the pastor then advised them to go to the Presbyterian Church: ( I had always wondered how that came about.) Can anyone help me out with dates to go along with these events? Is there a book with the church histories? What happened to the records from the German Lutheran Church...were they given to the Presbyterian Church, to the First American Lutheran Church, or a Lutheran Archive? I'd appreciate any information on this....I'd like to include it in the family history. Thanks, Joann Ellsworth, Maine
I am seeking the addresses and phone numbers for the following Oconto County Churches that were still in existance in 1942 for posting on the County Site. If you live in the area of any of them, would you write to me, please. if they still exist, where, or who now has the records. Hello, I would like to post a list of Oconto County Churches, their addresses, and phone numbers on the Oconto County GenWeb Site for visitors to use for research contacts. Would someone consider compiling such a list and submitting it to the site for full personal credit? I am presently transcribing the 1880 Oconto County Census for free access posting on the site. It is a big job and I hate to stop and do this church page, but there are so many requests for the information. If someone is interested (even in just a particular area of the county), please contact me. The site is: http://www.rootsweb.com/~wioconto/ Your help would be wonderful.
