Some information on this publication, based on a search of the library catalog for the State Historical Society of Wisconsin (SHSW): - ------------------------------------------------------------- I believe the correct title of the publication is "Commemorative biographical record of the upper Wisconsin counties of Waupaca, Portage, Wood, Marathon, Lincoln, Oneida, Vilas, Langlade and Shawano, containing biographical sketches of prominent and representative citizens, and of many of the early settled families." It contains 1110 pages. It was microfilmed by the SHSW in 1996. It was apparently again microfilmed as part of the "Old Northwest" series in about 1972 (this may actually be the same filming, just made part of this well-known series of county histories). The Wisconsin State Genealogical Society published a 97 page index (compiled by Mrs. Bailey W. Sturges) to the names in this publication in 1980. The book was reprinted, in two volumes, just last year by Brookhaven Press (LaCrosse WI); one might be able to borrow a copy of the reprint via interlibrary loan. Rollie
Hi, Our county historical society indexed our 1881 county history and is selling it for $65.00 with the new index and everything intact. The book you are looking at is multi-counties - so that probably will drive the price up. Check out some other sources before you up that bid, Marcia. Just my thoughts! Thanks! Depends what you are looking for. This is one of a series done on prominent individuals in Wisconsin Counties written in the 1880's. Most are men of wealth but there are a few short pieces on women (unmarried in education mostly). Many of these people were born "out east" and came to WI as young men. Some had family money to invest in large amounts of land for real estate or massive farming efforts. Educated, many started as managers in various businesses such as banks and lumber companies. From there they usually started their own businesses and grew to success. Many went on to politics after making a comfortable business income. It often has references to places of birth and Civil War Enlistment and Battles. If the family was notable "out east" then it gives parents and male siblings of accomplishment, wives and marriages are often mentioned briefly as are daughters and a bit more on sons of prominence. I have found the biographies interesting from a land and industrial developement standpoint (factories, canals, cities, politics) but not particularly useful to genealogical efforts. Rita Hi listers! Hello Sandy, You may want to try looking at the following address for this cemetery. http://www.rootsweb.com/~wioconto/cemetery.htm It is a list of all that have been found so far, along with the map location and as many contact addresses for records as have been found. There is also the address of the Oconto County Cemetery Association Secretary who may be able to help. If you come across any additional information that is not on that page, please send it to the County Site Host so it can be posted for others to use. This is a difficult page to find information for so any help is greatly appreciated! What are the surnames you are looking for? You may also wish to see if that cemetery has been documented by the Wisconsin Genealogical Society. The cemeteries that have been documented are at the following address along with instructions on how to order the list of gravestone inscriptions. There are two listed for Chase in Oconto County. The fee is minimal, the lists are accurate. http://www.rootsweb.com/~wsgs/cem9.htm#Oconto Hope this helps, Rita - Oconto County Site Host Greetings, Can anyone tell me if there is a cemetery in the very small place of Chase in Oconto County. It is in the very southern part I think. If there is no cemetery, where would they have gone to bury people there then. Thanks for any help, Sandy Perdue

Actually, just for your info. Iola is about an hour and 15 minute drive southeast of Wausua. Iola is actually closer to Stevens Point. I suppose that is relatively close but at that time it would have been quite a hike. Tory At 03:15 PM 7/6/99 -0500, D. I'm looking for descendents of George and Johann Niemuth early settlers of Zittau, WI. If you have information you want to share contact at jwoll@vbe.com.
Mattoon is in the Town of Hutchins, Shawano County, Wisoconsin.
The first Norwegians(mostly from Telemark) came to Waupaca County in the 1850's. Thor Helgeson, an itinerant teacher, wrote a book called "Fra Indianernes Lande" about this area. It was translated by Malcolm Rosholt. I have a copy and would be happy to do look-ups. It has an index. It was printed by Krause Publications in Iola and copyrighted by the Iola Historical Association. (No copies available) Betty Strand etty Strand
