Thomas Waugh & unknown wife's name migrated from Scotland and by about 1800 were living in Anacaster Twp in Wentworth County, Ontario. This was a rather large family, my wife's line running through their son Thomas Jr (b. 1801) who married Julia Emery in about 1819. They also had a large family with her line running through son James Waugh (b. 1820) who married Lydia Stenabaugh in about 1848. All of these families were in the Anacaster Twp and surrounding areas of Wentworth County. My wife's line continues through their son James Brennan Waugh (b. 1849 near Copetown) who marries Aseneth Barbary in 1874 in Copetown, Beverly Twp, in Wentworth County. This is where we are stuck. Aseneth is Mohawk, possibly even full-blood Mohawk. She names her parents in the marriage registration as R. Barbary and Jane (no last name), stating she was born in about 1852 in Westminster but doesn't say which county (there are two, one in Middlesex County and one in Prescott County). At the time of her 1874 marriage, she gives Copetown as her residence but so far, I've not been able to find her there, at least not in the 1871 census (yet). I have, however, found a William Richard Barbary (who goes by "Richard") married to Jane Rikely. The ages line up so it seems this is most likely the couple but so far, I cannot find them in the 1851 or 1861 census. I did find them in the 1871 census living in Hastings County, Sidney Twp. He's French Canadian (Catholic) and she, after some tracking, turns out to be of German ethnic origins (Methodist), her Rikely family firmly established in South Fredericksburg Twp, Lennox County, so clearly neither of these people are Native Americans. This leads me to now wonder if they might have adopted (or somehow acquired) Aseneth from a reservation or maybe a school, changing her "indian" name to Aseneth Barbary. Aseneth and James Brennan Waugh had 4 children, three of which survived to adulthood. Their only daughter, Lydia Jane, is my wife's ancestor. Aseneth died in Brantford where they had lived ever since they married. She died in 1881 of consumption and was buried there in Greenwood Cemetery. James moved with his children to Chicago sometime in the 1890s and also remarried to a woman named Dora (last name unknown) but had no children with her. James B. Waugh died in Chicago in 1900 and was buried back home in Brantford with Aseneth. James' brother Franklin ("Frank") committed suicide in Brantford in 1911. He was married to Rose Ellen Franklin and had 3 children, Frank (b. 1882), Percy and Pearl (Percy and Pearl were twins, b. abt 1887 in Brantford). Pearl married Alexander "Alac" James Allan in abt 1913. Percy married Minnie Whitney Jones in 1916. Both marriages were in the Brantford area. We aren't sure who Frank married but we believe he was still living in Ontario ! in 1956 when my wife's aunt and uncle made a trip from southern California, visiting with a "Pearl" and another relative "Frank" (per an old postcard) before leaving Ontario and driving across Canada to visit some other relatives by the last name of Crow/Crowe in Alberta (exact town location unknown). If anyone is related to this Waugh family and can help with any info, especially regarding Aseneth and her Native American origins (tribe, parents names, DOB, etc), we would very much like to hear from you. Many thanks.
