I am also a Waugh thru my mothers family, going back to John Waugh of Litchfield CT, who was born in 1687 and came to America in 1712. The Waughs are lowlanders and not a clan. They normally wear the Roxburgh District tartan. Mike I disagree about the tartan - but since tartans are just a game, it doesn't matter. There were no tartans in the Waugh region, and most of the Highland ones are fabrications. But they look nice. There were a lot of Waughs around Roxburghshire, but probably more over in Dumfriesshire. The name is a Border one, but probably originates from an older border, between Anglo-Saxon Northumbria and the Celtic kingdoms to the west. At risk of being a bit pedantic, they are not lowlanders...Scotland is divided into 3 parts - central lowlands, Highlands and Southern Uplands/Borders. The Waughs were hillmen from the Borders. But i guess you were meaning that they were not Highlanders, which is correct. And not a clan - technically correct since clan implies highlands.
