Author: LThompsonSmith Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.waugh/832/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Does anyone have any information on these two individuals? Alexander is the son of Rev. John Waugh and Elizabeth Madison. He was born abt. 1706. I have seen a few GEDCOMs with his wife's name as Sarah and a few with her surname as Taliaferro. I can't seem to find any supporting documentation. There appears to be at least three generations of Alexander Waugh Alexander (1674-c.1722) married Catherine Webb Alexander (?1706?-?) married Sarah ??Taliaferro?? Alexander (1734-1793) married Sarah Pearson Binns There is an Alexander who appears to be the overseer for Colonel John Taliaferro (1687 - 1744) of Spotsylvania County at his plantation in what is now the county of Orange. We know that Alexander Waugh (1734 - 1793) and his descendants are from Orange Co., VA 27 Apr 1738 Col. John Taliaferro, Gentleman, of Spotsylvania County, made a lease for 150 aces of land in Orange County for the natural lives of Alexander Waugh, Sarah Waugh, his wife, and Richard Waugh, his son, and thereafter there are many records of Alexander Waugh and his family in the records of Orange and Culpepper Counties. (Register of Overwharton Parish) 20 May 1749 Alexander Waugh, granted 100 acres adjoining land of Francis Conway and Taliaferro. (Virginia State Land Office Patent No. 27, 1748-1749, p. 191) I have always been curious if this land was given to Alexander Waugh - because he was his son-in-law. However the 100 acres granted in 1749 was after John Taliaferro's death (if I have the correct date) Does anyone have any information or a will that would shed some light on Alexander Waugh and whether or not he was married to a Sarah Taliaferro. Thanks in advance. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I was researching the Duduit line filling in my blanks when I ran across her daughter Angeline Waugh, born 1826 - I found that Angeline married a William Brinegar in 1850. What has me on this so strong right now is the fact that Brinegar is my paternal great-grandmother's maiden name! With Angeline being born in Kentucky and my Brinegar line being from Kentucky, I know this is a link between the two sides of my family. But, I cannot connect this William Brinegar in my Brinegar line. I was hoping that I would be lucky enough that someone on this board could shed some light on this for me. Author: waughhouse Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.waugh/461.2.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I think that you will find William Waugh, son of John and Augusteen Duduit Waugh, was named for her father - Guillaume Duduit. Several accounts show Guillaume to be an expert marksman, a scout for the militia, veteran of the war of 1812 and one says that he was a corporal at the storming of the Bastile. Guillaume was said to have great courage and excellent eyesight. (Although my husband and I both have had poor eyesight since childhood, both of our sons have perfect eyesight and our eldest is a superior shot.) You can read more about Guillaume Duduit and the Five Hundred at: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~henryhowesbook/scioto.html - and I have an excellent book by William Sibley, "The French Five Hundred and Other Papers" from The Tribune Press, 1901. The land grant signed to the French Five Hundred by President Thomas Jefferson gave them land just across the river from Kentucky. IF Augusteen and John Waugh are buried together in KY, I would have to see very predominant evidence that the John Waugh of PA could be the same John Waugh. Transportation of bodies some distance for burial was not as common then as now, and I'd be more inclined to think your PA John Waugh might be a younger relation (nephew or cousin) through those yet undiscovered PA ancestors. Until now, sources had directed me to the 1790 birthplace of John Waugh in Washington township in western New York. These same sources claim that his mother was a Native American and this township is very near the location of Seneca Indian tribal lands. In the 1800's, you did not volunteer that you were Native American, which might go a long way toward explaining the brick wall. Something to consider... What is your family connection to this Waugh/Duduit family group? Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: pattheise Surnames: Waugh Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.waugh/461.2.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: John was born about 1790 in Washington, PA, and died in 1861 in Carter County, KY. Someone e-mailed me that both he and Augusteen are buried in Anglin Cemetery in Hopewell, KY. They had nine children, the second of whom was William (born 1815 in Fleming, KY). I THINK John's father's name was William. I came to that conclusion and so did others (independently) who have posted on this web site. Nobody has John's mother's name, however. I found a John Waugh whose age matches up...he shows on the Hamiltonban, PA, 1860 & 1870 census as a retired farmer, living with people w/a different surname. Perhaps he returned to PA from KY after Augusteen died? Someone also e-mailed me that a Mason County, KY, restaurant bar license was held by John M. Waugh, Sr. He also ran the Ohio River ferry. I have no idea how reliable this info is, but it's interesting to read something besides birthdays & death info. The town in Mason Co. was Maysville. Other than that, I have also hit a brick wall on this family line. If you get anything, please e-mail and I'll do the same.
