On a recent trip to the UK I purchased a book - Dating Old Photographs by Robert Pols. According to this book, the tintype process was patented in the mid 1850s by an American, Hamilton L. Smith. It says tintypes were introduced in about 1856 and were used by beach and fairground photographers as late as 1950, but most were produced before the First World War. This little book gives quite a bit of useful information on how to date photographs so I might be able to help if you contact me with more detail.
