WATT could definitely be a variation of WATTS. In my case, my last name is WATTS and I am descended from WATT. The "s" was added to our name in the U.S. in the early 19th Century by my Scottish great-great-grandfather Hugh Stuart WATT. Family legend has it that Hugh was trying to distance himself from the Scottish (who, supposedly, were not highly regarded in this country) and added the "s", which was more English. In fact, in my great-grand aunt's diary, she says that Hugh's father "admonished him thus: 'dinna come hame with an "s" on your name." Sounds a bit too conveniently poetic to be real, but my family swears by it. By the way, Don, I noticed your ancestor's names, James and John WATT. I also have those names in my family. But we are pure Scottish all the way. Can you trace any of your roots to James WATT, the Scottish inventor? I am supposedly related to him, and I have been trying to find connections from him to the aforementioned Hugh Stuart WATT. Thanks Andrew Watts New York City, NY
