Karen, If you look at the Scottish Clans, you'll see many variations of the clan name within each clan. Basically, since so many were illiterate, name spelling was done by shipmasters, tax collectors and census enumerators. Frequently, the written name stuck. E.g., even in the 1800's names changed. My father was Neal (I'm a Jr.) named for his grandfather Neal McLaurin. But, early records spell his grandfather's name Neill McLaren. I have no doubt that the Scottish Wats (Watts, Wattis) have the same history. Regarding your story, I seem to remember that one tied to a specific Watts line, but not being mine, I kind of lost interest in it. Certainly, early Scottish Watt migrants might have wanted to fit in with all the English in early Colonial America. However, after the Jacobite Revolution in 1745/6, the number of Scottish migrants rose enormously. Between 1750 1nd 1775 an estimated 12,000 moved to North Carolina alone. As for the English Watts, I need to do more research. Anyone have some English Watts name history? Greetings All. My name is Gordon Allen WATTS and I live in Port Coquitlam, British Columbia, Canada. It has been some time since I have seen as much activity on this list as there was on the last digest. Since it has been some time since I posted my interests I thought I would throw them into the current mix as well. My WATTS line however, unlike most postings here, are not in the States but back in England. In the chart below, my grandfather Fred was born in Axford, Ramsbury Parish, Wiltshire, England, as was his father Philip, and so far as I have been able to find his grandfather William as well. My great-uncle Frank went to South Africa in the early 1900s. My great-aunt Elizabeth AMY came to Canada and lived in Brandon, Manitoba until her death. My grandparents came to Canada (Riondel, BC) in 1912 and lived there their entire life in Canada. Other than my immediate family, unless there is a connection prior to the early 1800s in Wiltshire, England, I have no known WATTS connections in North America. Hi folks, I am looking for information on Samuel Watts, born in late 1700's, unknown location. One of his sons, Anthony Banaugh Watts, born early 1800's, unknown location, settled in the Kansas City, Missouri, area. I have a good bit of information on Anthony's family, though there are still a lot of holes, but I have no idea of Samuel's origins. David C. Rains
Might as well jump in: I am looking for the family of JOHN WATT (no "s" used in my family), b. in TN 23 Nov 1869, d. in TX 18 Jan 1918. Was supposedly orphaned young, maybe about 10 yrs old; had a brother (or half-brother) named "BERT" who was blind. Know little or nothing of his family or early years/location. Was in NE TX (Bowie Cnty) by the late 1880s; married my grandmother, RUTH MARY BARLOW, there on 6 Jan 1891. Have inferred that JOHN WATT's father's name was probably JAMES, but not proven (this inference is based on a peculiarity in the naming pattern of JOHN WATT's own children--to long to explain here). Anybody recognize anything. Thanks. Bob Strong Robert W. Hi, I am trying to make the connection with my great grandfather Roland Watts from Morganton North Carolina and his ancestor Fate Lane. I know from past stories in the family that this is my direct line, I have just not been able to make the connection. Any help would be appreciated. Cornelius Lane arrived in the United States in 1790. He married Mary Deal. They resided in Brindletown NC, (right outside of Morganton NC) One of their sons was Lafayette Lane, Lafayette had 8 wives reportedly. One of these wives was Delthra Watts. I am particularly looking for information on Delthra Watts. Thanks, Donna Karns Florida

My Watts line starts with Elijah Watts. I believe that he was born in Orange Co., VA. He had a daughter Sarah who was born about 1790 also in Orange Co. Sarah married Kinzea Stone and they had quite a few children. Elijah Thomas Agnes James Fanny Sarah Edward Nancy Mildred John Catherine Kinzea Jr. I do have more information on the children if anyone is interested please e-mail me. Also you can check http://users.cyberzone.net/~firesong to see the genealogy online. The sources are included. If Elijah is my brick wall. I'll admit that I haven't been searching much on this direction because I have been concentrating on another line. I am always looking for more information. Thank You Nancy
