    3. Hi Stacie, The social security death index shows the following: SYDNEY WATTS born 14 Feb 1910 died Apr 1968 SSN 234-16-5887 issued West Virginia. There is an Etta Watts on the index that had SSN issued in Virginia and that was also her last resident, her death date was May 1973. This may not be who you are looking for but she is the only one that is close with the May 1973 date of death. Go to the following site http://ssdi.genealogy.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/ssdi.cgi type in name or SSN and you will get what I found then you can send for a copy of the social security number application which may have the parents listed. You can go to advanced search and type in more information if needed. Hope this helps. After Daniel had died Betsy gave power of Attorney to her daughter Mary Manly Littlefield. It states Daniel as having 4 grandchildren..2 Littlefield (my grandmother and her sister) and 2 male "''Watts" It states whereabouts for them "'unknown" They could not be children of William, as he married Lila O'Neil very young and died after his 2 children were born...Lila remarried but did not have more children. This all took place about 1913 in Brockton Massachusetts.... I would really like to find these two..Watts boys..I think their names were John and George....but I am not 100% sure.. Thanks all Pam

    1. Re: [WATTS-L] WATTS > Ohio
    2. Neal
    3. Stacie, The first rule for one starting out in genealogy is to talk to the living. So your starting place is with David. Gather his vital data, sibling data, parents data and grandparents data. (birth date, birthplace, middle names, property owned, medical history - anything which might help later generations - family stories, legends anything that might lead to the past) If his parents are alive, then talk to them. Aunts, Uncles, etc. are also sources of initial information. If you are doing this as a surprise for him, you'll have to bypass David and go directly to the others. Your second step, is to start documenting what you're learning. Either get some standard genealogy sheets, or preferably, get a good genealogy program for your PC. I like Family Tree Maker, but there are other excellent products. NOTE: Not everything you are told by the living will be true. People's memories are not perfect and they often use nicknames that people used. E.g., My father's name was Neal, but everyone called him "Pat", a nickname bestowed on him by a barber when he was a kid. This means you will have to start gathering source data from Census records, old Bibles, marriage licenses, etc. AGAIN, not everything you gather will be true. E.g., Census records could have been given by the youngest kid or the next door neighbor, or the enumerator could have been a poor speller. Take a look at the on line lessons at http://www.familytreemaker.com/university.html These will help you get started. Specifically regarding the Watts lines in America, there are numerous Watts lines migrating from England, Scotland, Ireland and the Caribbean. Some lines have Native American blood. Some have arrived relatively recently, but one is older than either the Plymouth Colony or Jamestown. He was a sailor who married a Native American. He was either was stranded or jumped ship before any colonies were established. Good hunting (genealogy wise), Neal

    1. [WATTS-L] Motion M-160 passed as amended
    2. Gordon A. WATTS
    3. Greetings All. Voting on Jason Kenney's Motion M-160 has just been completed in the House of Commons. The motion as proposed read: "That, in the opinion of this House, the government should take all necessary steps to release the 1911 census records once they have been deposited in the National Archives in 2003." Unfortunately, during the final hour of debate on this motion, MP Mac Harb, ostensibly in support of allowing access to Historic Census, proposed an amendment that watered down the main motion considerably. That motion of amendment changed the word "take" to "consider taking". The government could "consider taking" action re: census records until the cows come home and it would not do diddly to satisfy our concerns. The amendment, on a recorded vote, passed 144 to 102 (one might wonder where the other 55 MPs were). The subsequent amended main motion was "carried on division" (meaning there was no recorded vote). The motion passing without a recorded vote is disappointing in that I had intended using a recorded vote to update the MPs Scoreboard.. The fact that the vote was not recorded makes that very difficult. I felt that MPs voting in favour of M-160 would also vote in favour of a Bill to allow access to historic census. A point of interest is that both Stockwell Day and Joe Clark were in the House and both voted against the amendment. I do not recall seeing leaders of the Liberals, Bloc, or NDP. They may have been there but I did not see them, nor do I recall hearing their names called on the vote of the amendment. The Liberals were out in force, and the only two Liberals that voted against the amendment were MPs Murray Calder and John Bryden. Industry Minister John Manley was conspicuous by his absence. Happy Hunting. Gordon A.
