    3. Hello list, With new information just received I've made the jump across the pond. First email I received said: There is a paper in there that lists Richard Watts, Jr. (2x), Richard Esq & Richard Heirs. It seems they owned mills in St Mary's County MD and the Richard who is the father of Charles has a death notice in the Baltimore County, that states he was formerly from St Mary's County. British Roots of Maryland Families lists a Richard Watts of St. Mary's who left a son Richard part of his property. This Richard is the father of Richard who is the father of Charles. The reason the second Richard left St Mary's because the British burned his Mills and that is listed in the Book "Revolutionary Patriots of Calvert & St. Mary's Counties." from the next email I learned : Charles's father Richard inherited the baronial estates in England from his father Richard, and the elder Richard had a brother named William who held the deeds to the property. So I asked where? and received: "in or near Brigham in the Country of Cumberland in Old England the deed of Land and Houses in and near Brigham, brother William Watts has in his possession." Then I asked the last of the W questions, When?: This was in 1771 or 1777, can't remember and its in the envelope to be mailed. Some of the other Watts in Maryland are of Scottish or Welsh origin. So we can't yet tell who belongs to who. Probably your next step on this Richard is back to Merrie Olde England to see if you can find out any more on the Estates of the Sr Late Richard. Richard Sr did say that the deed was in the hands of his brother William and there was a William still in St Mary's County at his death. However, until we get a copy of that Will we won't know for sure cause he could be in England. So here I am. Anyone researching Watts in MD and Cumberland Co England? This line goes thus: Richard d. ca1771 - 1777 (hope to know when snail mail gets here) Richard d. 1807 Baltimore MD Charles d. 1835 Muskingum Co Oh William d. 1887 Mary Ann Watts Gibson d. 1893 Mary Ann Watts Gibson was my gggrandmother. Thank you Chuck Gibson

    1. [WATTS-L] MP Murray Calder has website supporting access to Census records
    2. Gordon A. WATTS
    3. Greetings All. MP Murray Calder now has a new website. Murray was the first MP to respond to the question posed by Global Genealogy about his position on access to Post 1901 Census records, and now is the first (and to my knowledge, only) MP to have pages on a website supporting that access. Murray's Home Page is accessible at http://www.murraycaldermp.com/ If you access the following URL you might see someone familiar to you. http://www.murraycaldermp.com/issues/census/index.htm I will have a link to Murray's website on the Post 1901 Census Project website shortly. 1. [WATTS-L] ATI roundtable discussions.
    2. Gordon A. WATTS
    3. Greetings All. As indicated yesterday I am reporting to you the results of our involvement in the roundtable discussions being held by the Access to Information Act Review Task Force. This Task Force, you will recall, is the body which Industry Minister Brian Tobin indicated was being charged with conducting the "further broad based discussions with all Canadians" relating to public access to Historic Census records. More on that below. It had been my thought, prior to the discussions being held, that I would have to be prepared to "do battle" in order to convince other participants of the importance of public access to these records. I was pleasantly surprized to find that this was not the case. Of the seventeen participants listed on the schedule there were three of us whose primary concern had to do with public access of Historic Census for reasons of Genealogy. Those were myself, Lyn Winters, and Dave MacKenzie from the Ontario Genealogical Society. I was particularly pleased to see as a participant in these discussions, and was honoured to meet Chad Gaffield who was one of the Expert Panel on Access to Historic Census Records, and is now President of the Canadian Historical Association. During our lunch break and later we were able to have an interesting discussion with Mr. Gaffield. The remaining participants were mainly chief librarians or archivists from prestigious institutions, mostly various Universities, or heads of companies that were users of Access to Information. In reading the impressive credentials of the other participants, I felt a little out of place. The Agenda of the discussions was to span a period of five hours, including a break for a working lunch. The issue of public access to Historic Census records was brought up almost immediately, and all told was discussed for almost a full hour. I was able to have my say on the issue and had prepared something to read but ended up not using it. As my forte is being able to put something down on paper, rather than speaking "off the cuff", it was fortunate that Lyn Winters and David MacKenzie were present to more eloquently verbalize our concerns. I fully intend to submit a written submission to the Task Force to support what was stated during this roundtable discussion. In the end run, the opinion of those present was unanimous in that public access to Historic Census should be allowed after 92 years, as permitted by the Privacy Act and its Regulations. While the overall discussions were interesting, and hopefully productive, perhaps the more interesting conversation was that held outside of the roundtable discussions. While they did not take part in the discussions themselves, there were three members of the Task Force present as observers. During the lunch break, and after the roundtable discussions finished, those of us whose primary interest was in regaining public access to Historic Census, were advised that perhaps the ATI Act Review Task Force was no the best route to take to achieve that goal. We were advised that there would be likely little said about this issue in the final Report of the Task Force. We were further advised that a review of the Privacy Act formed no part of the mandate of the Task Force. The members of the Task Force had not been advised that a review, with subsequent recommendations, relating to public access to Historic Census, was included in their mandate. This was reinforced by a conversation Lyn Winters had with Mary Anne Stevens of the Task Force on Wednesday the 28th of March. Ms. Stevens maintained that the reason the four of us had been invited to participate in the discussions was that the Task Force was interested in getting comments from a wide cross section of people using the Access Act. She said the group represented on Monday was a cross section of users including Librarians, Archivists, Lawyers, Genealogists, and Historians. Their purpose was to seek our views on the ATIA and its administration, NOT the specific issue of access to Historical Census records. On Monday evening, following the end of the roundtable discussions, I wrote an email to Industry Minister Brian Tobin detailing much of what I have stated above. I asked for a personal response to the concerns and questions raised. I do not expect I will hold my breath waiting for his response. I have in mind some other things that I will seek through Access to Information, including any or all documents support the claim of the Minister that "further broad-based discussion by all Canadians" would be included in the mandate of the ATI Act Review Task Force. It would appear that someone, somewhere, is not telling the whole truth. Happy Hunting. Gordon A. 1. [WATTS-L] My trip to Ottawa.
    2. Gordon A. WATTS
    3. Greetings All. As they say in the movies, "I'M BACK!!!" I arrived home from Ottawa late last night after more than five hours in the air. Not much energy expended just sitting there, but bery tiring. I detail here a few of the highlights of the trip, but will save my report of the roundtable discussions of the ATI Act Review Task Force, held Monday, until tomorrow when I have caught up on my sleep. A number of things happened while in Ottawa, some planned, and some not. I arrived in Ottawa Friday evening and made contact with Lyn Winters. Saturday he and his lovely wife Jan picked me up at my hotel, gave me a tour around the city and took me back to their home in Kanata, and later to dinner at a nice restaurant. After that, back to my hotel. Tuesday I visited the National Library of Canada where I deposited two copies of my submission to the Expert Panel on Acccess to Historic Census Records. On a whim I decided to see if I could possibly meet with Mr. Ian Wilson, the National Archivist of Canada. He was unavailable at the time but I was able to get an appointment for later in the afternoon. On my return we met and discussed the Census situation for about 40 minutes. I found Mr. Wilson very much a gentleman, and I was pleased that because of previous email correspondence with him, that he was aware of who I was. Wednesday was a busy day. I met with Senator Lorna Milne, at her gracious invitation, for lunch in the Parliamentary Restuarant. This is not a place that the general public get to frequent. Patrons must be parliamentarians or their guests. It was a very elegant place with linen table cloths. I was told Wednesdays was the best day for people watching and eating. Caucus meetings are held Wednesday mornings and on those days there is a buffet lunch. I had a very enjoyable lunch with the Senator. She is a very gracious and elegant lady. She had also arranged for me to have my own private tour of four rooms of the East Block (where the Senator's offices are) that had been restored to their original 1910 state. One of these rooms had been the office of Sir John A. McDonald. Following lunch, I met with MP Murray Calder and presented to him the second batch of petitions for the House of Commons. After that meeting I accompanied him to the House of Commons where he got me into the Visitor's Gallery without having to wait in line. During the afternoon sitting he presented our first batch of petitions containing almost 1200 signatures, and re-presented his Bill C-312 to the House for first reading and printing. This Bill is identical to Bill S-12 of Senator Milne. It was something special to be in the gallery of the House when something that I have been involved with was presented. Now we must hope that his Bill is drawn in the lottery to be placed on the order of precedence in order to be debated. While meeting with Senator Milne, she advised me that her Bill S-12, on Tuesday, had received second reading and was referred to Committee. She also advised that she had added my name to her list of witnesses to testify before the Committee so I may be going to Ottawa again at some point, possibly in April. All in all, an interesting and in some ways exciting five days. More on the roundtable discussions tomorrow. Happy Hunting. Gordon A. 2. Posting this for Norma ---------- Forwarded Message ---------- Subject: Watt Line Date: Mon, 19 Mar 2001 20:56:37 -0800 From: "Norma Chapin" <[email protected]> To: [email protected] I am researching The Andrew Watt line. I know that he died in Kircudbright, Scotland in about 1849. He was married to a Hannah McKean who died the same year he did. He had a grandson named Wiliam Watt that was living with them during the 1841 census. William's mother was Martha Watt his father's last name was Dalrymple. Later in life he went by this name even though his mother and mother were not married. He was boarding with Sarah Dunbar in the 1881 census and was listed a a pauper fromerly a labourer he died of generic debility and old age. Also another granddaughter of Andrew's lived in Manchester or Preston, Lancshire, England and was born in about 1816 o there abouts. She married a John Moss Brandreth. One of their sons John Moss Brandreth is said to have gone to Australia and there found his grandfather James Watt. We had been told that James died in New Orleans, Louisana, U. S. A. In 1999 a Janelle, who was living in Australia contacted me with some information on the Andrew Watt line. I was neglectful and didn't write her back. Her E-Mail address was: [email protected] when I tried to write to her the other day the E-Mail came back. Does anyone know anything about her. I would like to contact her again. He also speaks of others and matters attending at Court Butler and Barber Counties. Watts 1901-1960 Several of these children settled in the Purdue Hill area while John F. Watts and Ned W. Watts settled at Jones Mill, present day Frisco City. Then about 1905-1910, several of the children moved to Escambia Co., FL settling near Century. As can be seen from the above, Ned #1 was born 1814 which fits between Moses and Lucy Watts. The first born child is named Permelia J. (Jane) fondly called Amelia and later "Dovie." The second child, Margaret, appears to be named after Elvira's sister. They never name a child after Jamima Hodges, although the second born son is named Laird, while the first born son is named Thomas J. I have not learned yet what the "J" represents (i.e., Jacob, John, James, etc.) I first find Ned & Elvira Fleming Watts living in Conecuh County near Laird B. Fleming where they are enumerated in 1840 Census. In 1850 however, they are living in Coffee County near at least one Fleming relative. Also nearby is Murdock McCloud and spouse Lucinda Phelps of GA. When Ned and Elvira move to Monroe County where they are found 1860-1900, Murcock McCloud and Lucinda Phelps move too and live a couple doors from Ned and Elvira. Elvira's father, Laird, died about 1850 or so in Milton, FL where one of his sons lived. Several of the Fleming children moved to TX early on and daughter Jane married Wilson G. Buchanan who had moved to Natitoches, LA in 1835. Ned does not appear to have any WATTS kin living near him. While others of the Thomas-Hannah Rust Boggess WATTS line are present in Butler and later Monroe Co., and others later on, NONE appear to be connected to Ned. It has been really difficult to try to connect him without any siblings or other family living in the vicinity. At any rate, would appreciate any guidance you might offer. More importantly, is there an Estate record for Jacob and one for Milly as well in Clay County, AL????? Look forward to hearing from anyone who might shed some light. Would love to break down the brick wall.

    3. All the messages seem to be about later Watts in Canada and other places. Does any one know anything about Frederick Watts B 1719 or 1721 in Glamorgan Wales. He married a Jean or Jane Murray in 1749 in Wales. They immigrated to America about 1760. He was a Brig. Gen in the Rev. War. They had a son David B. 1764, and daughters Margaret Catherine Elizabeth, Jane Margery Mary and Sarah. They lived in Wheatsfield Twp. Pa. that was Cumberland and then became Perry. I know nothing of their parents or siblings. Any help would be appreciated. Dorothea
