Dear Listers, I was delighted to read all the Watts family history being discussed for a change!! I thank all of you who joined me in posting their families and brickwalls! John H. Watts, Jr., I know you must have a pretty large database by now. If I remember correctly, you pretty much took all the post that went to "Lori's Watts Newsletter" and the "Watts Crossings" and added them to your database. I know I sent you stuff on my Watts line several years ago and, recently updated you. I wish I could help you on your line but, I don't have any info. Sorry... But, I really do appreciate your efforts and your support!! I do have he right John, don't I??? BTW... I really miss the Watts Newsletters!!! Mika, I saw that you had a Mary Virginia Watts who married John Augustus Lester in MO. I have interest in the Lester line that was in IL and MO. Do you have any other info on John A. Lester??? If so, please email me. Bob Strong, thanks for the bit of humor on WATT and WATTS! You didn't miss my post on James and John's children... Some is posted below and I'll send more soon. I'm pasting two more generation's of my Watts line below. These are children of James Watts. Next email I'll do John Watts. (I hope this comes through okay, I'm not an expert at trying to past from FTM). Thank you all so much! I really enjoyed reading your family information! And, I will be saving it so, if I run across anything that would fit with your lines, I'll be able to contact you. Best regards, Judy Lee Watts 1. Looking for a Fred Watts Jr. who was married to a McMillion in Florida Sept 2, 1939. Freds parents were Fred C. Watts Sr. and Eunice V. ??? they lived in Tampa Florida from 1927 to 1942 as I found them in the city directories. Supposedly Fred Jr. went into the Army in 1940 at McDeal Air Force Base and later deserted. Supposedly he was born in Paducah Kentucky in 1919. I cant find this family anywhere except for the Tampa Florida directories. Any information on this family would be greatly appreciated. Leslie (Watts) Banister

Judy, Did you ever post that list of James' and John's children--if so, I missed it. I guess if you put all my Watt family members together you get WATTS (just joking--I know the list is for both). I am seeking to identify the parents of my grandfather, John WATT, who was born on 23 Nov. 1869, in TN (likely in Gibson County or one of the adjacent counties, but not proven). I have no knowledge of either of John WATT's parents-our oral family history has always reported that he was orphaned fairly early, probably before the age of 10 years old. I have recently uncovered some records that might indicate that this was true. Through the new LDS 1880 US Census transcriptions and index, I have finally managed to located John WATT on that census. The 1880 census places him in a household in Heaths, Gibson County, TN [listed on the census as "1st mail district"]; the head of the household is Joseph PARRISH, whose wife is Adline (Adaline). Unfortunately the "Relationship" column for John WATT contains no entry, so no help there. There are a number of other individuals residing in this household, including one Samuel WATT, who is listed as a "Boarder" and is 23 years old. Samuel Watt married a Mary F. Foster in 1881, in Gibson Cnty, TN; Mary Foster Watt is supposed to have died in 1888. The relationship of Samuel to John WATT is not known. The full listing for this household is below: Census Place: Heaths, Gibson, Tennessee Source: FHL Film 1255254 National Archives Film T9-1254 Page 201C Relation Sex Marr Race Age Birthplace Joseph PARRISH Self M M W 45 NC Adline PARRISH Wife F M W 43 TENN John WATT M S W 11 TENN Sarah FOSTER Sister F W W 36 NC Addie FOSTER Niece F S W 4 TENN Elbert FOSTER Nephew M S W 2 TENN Paten JOHNSON Hirelng M S B 16 TENN Albert HOUSE Boarder M S W 23 TENN Samuel WATT Boarder M S W 23 TENN William RODGERS Boarder M S W 28 TENN John FLY Boarder M W W 34 TENN Joseph MASSEY Boarder M S W 23 TENN [NOTE: While the LDS copy of this census shows this "group" as a separate family, the National Archives Film does NOT show a "Family Number" in the column adjacent to Joseph Parrish. The NAF film shows a family number (146) in front of the preceding family, the family of James Mourning; there is NO family number adjacent to the Parrish family. The next family number, 147, belongs to the Cunningham family that begins immediately following Joseph Massey. This section of the census does NOT contain ANY "Dwelling Numbers." This record was copied from the LDS CD-ROM, but has been annotated/corrected with information from the NAF images.] I have established through marriage and cemetery records that Sarah FOSTER is in fact Joseph PARRISH's sister and that she is probably NOT John WATT's mother. It appears that Adline (Adaline) PARRISH's name when she married Joseph PARRISH was Adaline HOUSE, but it also appears that this may have been her first husband's name, NOT her maiden name (I am not absolutely positive on this aspect-still tracking down records). Besides the record of Samuel WATT in this household , the presence of Albert HOUSE also may be of significance (beside the potential relationship to Adaline). There is an oral record in my family of John WATT having a half-brother who was known to my mother and her sisters as "Uncle Bert." They remembered his visiting when they were children and that he was blind. I would deeply appreciate hearing from anyone who might have ANY information that would help me identify the family of John WATT, or that could assist in sorting out the relationships of the various individuals in this household on the 1880 census. Thank you, Bob Strong [email protected] Robert W. Strong <><><>"Things are more like they are right now [email protected]<><><><>than they have ever been."
I have kept quiet because I haven't seen too much mail about Watts' in England. If anybody has any from Burbage in Leicestershire and an offshoot that moved to St Pancras London about 1880 then I would be happy to exchange notes. all the best Paul Watts ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Friday, January 11, 2002 3:29 AM Subject: [WATTS-L] Calling all WATTS! > Dear listers, > > No offense but this is the least active list that I belong to. Greetings All. As a result of a request to do so, and for the information of all, I have now placed on the Post 1901 Census Project website, Instructions to Officers and Enumerators of Census for almost every Census of Canada from 1871 to 1941. The only one missing is that for 1881. Access the Post 1901 Census Project website at the URL following my signature. Click 'Home Page' then 'Other sites'. Scroll down and click on the link for the Instructions. I am currently working on pages for reports of those attending the Town Hall meetings and will post a message when the first of these are up and running. On another note -- anyone being contacted to participate in Focus Groups should not admit to being involved in genealogical or historical research, or to belonging to an associated society. One person asked to participate, after attending, admitted to being an amateur genealogist. When responding positively to a question of her membership in a genealogy society she was escorted from the group and advised that she could not participate. So much for assurances from Statistics Canada that there were no restrictive conditions for participation in these endeavours. Happy Hunting. Gordon A. Re: Judy's comment about needing more activity on the Watts rootslist. I agree that there needs to be more activity on this list. I have never received any leads or data on any of my family's Watts family since I began receiving these postings. I have always checked my miscellaneous Watts data base and have tried to help others whenever possible, however. I sure would appreciate it, if you would recheck your data bases for any connections to my enclosed Watts ancestors. My second great grandfather was Allen Watts, b. abt. 1801 somewhere in Maryland. His wifes name was Elizabeth Edwards b. abt. 1810. Allen's death date and location of his death unknown, but have been lead to believe that he did die in either Ohio or possibly in Indiana and likewise no death date or place of death for his wife Elizabeth. He and Elizabeth were married 5 January 1826 somewhere in Muskingum County, Ohio. I have no knowledge of who either of their parents were or who any of their brothers and sist! ers would have been. Allen and Elizabeth Watts had the following children: My great grandfather John Edward Watts, b. 15 Sep 1826 m. Sarah Matilda Waddell; William Allan Watts b. 18 Dec 1833 m. Hannah Matthews; Sarah B. Watts b. abt. 1835 m. Thomas Jackson Losh; Louise Watts b. abt. 1839 d.abt. 1858; Rebecca Watts b. abt. 1840 nothing more known about her; James Ander Watts b. 27 Jul 1843 d. 16 Nov 1908 m. Rebecca Lemon; another son used the name Allen Watts b. 28 Oct 1845 married a woman by the name of Carver and supposedly moved to Greeley, Colorado and have photo's of him, Elizabeth Temperance Watts b. 11 Nov 1848 nothing more known about her; Thomas Watts b. abt. 1849-52 possibly died in Humboldt, Kansas otherwise nothing known about him; Edward Watts b. 18 Jul 1853 and her also married a woman by the name of Carver, and nothing more known about him. I do have a tremendous amount of data on some of these lines up to and encluding the present day descendants of these fami! lies and did publish a tree back in 1981 and have since sold many copies that are computer generated having added more data since 1981. Otherwise, I have been researching and collecting miscellaneous Watts data since the late 50's when I was 12 years old. Much of my data in my data base is data for other Watts families and have built trees from various sources through the years and have shared much of this data with others. I sure would appreciate it now, if subscribers to this posting would check their data bases, too, and see if any of the above data can be found in their records. Thanks. Sincerely, John H. Watts Jr., P.S. Dear listers, No offense but this is the least active list that I belong to. I would like to see family history discussed for a change so, to start the ball rolling, I'm going to list my Watts line again. Won't you join me?? 1. Thomas WATTS b. abt 1775/80 in VA or NC??, and died on 19 Sept 1837 in Robertson Co., TN. He married Elizabeth Betsy JONES 17 Nov 1807 in Davidson Co., TN. She was born abt 1777/80 in NC, and died 10 Jun 1863 in Robertson Co., TN. If anyone has any suggestions at to who Thomas's parents might be, please let me know. Children of Thomas and Elizabeth Jones WATTS, (that lived and had children), are: 1. James WATTS b. 22 Aug 1808 in Davidson Co., TN and died aft. 1870 in Robertson Co., TN. He married (1) Courtney LOVELL 30 Nov 1828 in Robertson Co., TN. She was born abt. 1809, and died abt. 1843 in Robertson Co., TN. He married (2) Elizabeth Jackson MILES 11 Jun 1844 in Davidson Co., TN. She was born abt. 1818 in TN. 2. John W. WATTS b. 11 Jun 1818 in Robertson Co., TN, and died 1 Oct 1900 in Robertson Co., TN. He married Elenor TAYLOR 1 Mar 1838 in Robertson Co., TN. She was born abt. 1820 in NC and died 30 Sept 1901 in Robertson Co., TN. Next email I'll list children of James and John. My WATTS line were primarily in the area of Davidson, Robertson and Cheatham counties of TN. One son of James WATTS, John Washington WATTS, migrated to Jefferson Co., IL. Thomas WATTS was dropped by aliens into Davidson Co., TN by 1805 when he shows up on the tax list for that year. I cannot find any info on him prior to that date. I have traced Elizabeth Betsy JONES'S family a little further back and her parents were Abraham JONES and Keziah, nee unknown. Elizabeth had one full brother that I know of, Shadrack JONES who married Cilla DOWLEN in Davidson Co., TN. She had a half brother, Isaac MAYFIELD, and four half sisters, Annie, Polly, Keziah & Nellie BERRY. Abraham JONES was killed at Fort Nashboro in defense of the fort in 1782/83. I would appreciate any information that would lead me to the parents and siblings of Thomas WATTS!!!! Best regards, Judy Lee Watts
Greetings all. I have had some reports from those who attended the Town Hall Meetings on Monday, with some more to come. A number of those writing me have expressed the opinion that the first two speakers of the afternoon session, who spoke against access, were government 'plants'. I do not yet know their names or positions but at this time I am led to believe that they were employees of a statistical agency of the Nova Scotia Government. I know for a fact that for the Ottawa meetings, a Privacy researcher and consultant was 'invited' to appear and speak. He contacted me before the meeting to advise me of his 'invitation'. It must have been a shock to StatCan to find that this individual did not come out in opposition to access of the 1906 and 1911 Censuses. We will be watching with interest to see how many other meetings have 'invited' participants, particularly those who who work for the various statistical agencies of the governments, either federally or provincially. So much for the stated desire to hear the opinions of 'ordinary' Canadians. Some writers have expressed the opinion that they might like to speak at these meetings but feel others from various academic or historical/genealogical societies can do a better job. To those who might feel this way, my response is to say 'go for it!' Your opinion is just as valid as anyone else's, and as 'ordinary' Canadians, it is your opinion that is sought by the bureaucrats of StatCan. Don't let any of these meetings proceed without sufficient speakers to fill the alloted time slots. Please keep us informed regarding your participation, and what happens at the meetings.
