Greetings All. After a great deal of work I have finished updating (temporarily) the Scoreboards for Members of Parliament and Senators. The files have been sent and should be loaded sometime Monday. Current totals are: Members of Parliament FOR 141 AGAINST 6 NON-COMMITTAL 64 NO RESPONSE 85 Senators FOR 26 AGAINST 3 NON-COMMITTAL 11 NO RESPONSE 56 There are currently five vacancies in the House of Commons and nine in the Senate. Please check the Scoreboards and if you have received a response from an MP or Senator that is not reflected on the Scoreboards, please forward it to me so that it can be added to their correspondence logs. Happy Hunting. Gordon A. Watts [email protected] Co-Chair, Canada Census Committee Port Coquitlam, BC http://globalgenealogy.com/Census en français http://globalgenealogy.com/Census/Index_f.htm
Seeking contact with descendants and or researchers of your family that resided in that part of Montgomery Co NC, which later became Stanly Co NC. We are doing a publishing a book and would like to include your Stanly [formerly Montgomery] Co NC Ancestors. Sam West Lumberton, NC
Greetings All. With everything else that has been happening, I have gotten somewhat behind in updating of the Scoreboards for Members of Parliament and Senators. For the past few days I have been working to change that and so far the following changes have been made and should be on-line early in the week. I am continuing to update files and expect more changes to be made within the next day or two. >From ?? to non-committal response MPs Sue Barnes (ON) and Brian Pallister (MB) >From X to non-committal response MP David Pratt (ON) >From non-committal response to gold tick MPs David Kilgour (AB), Robert Thibault (NS), Gurbal Singh Malhi (ON) >From ?? to gold tick Senators Rose-Marie Cool (NB), Michael Kirby (NS) With the change of Robert Thibault (NS) to a gold tick, Nova Scotia has become the first, and only, province to become SOLID GOLD, with all Members of Parliament being supportive of access to Post 1901 Census Records. We look forward to other provinces matching this record. In order for this to happen we must keep writing our letters seeking support for access. Please forward any responses received to me for posting to the correspondence logs. Happy Hunting. Gordon A. I am fairly new to this list (amongst others) and have been lurking in the background to see what is happening. I thought I might post my interests now. MAIN (possibly known as TREMAIN) - Ashington, Cramlington. They moved up from Calstock, Cornwall during the 1860's. Anyone who knew Ashington from 1920 - 1970 (at least) will know of Main's of Ashington cycle and motorbike shops - that my Dads maternal line. TIPPET - Cramlington. They also moved up from Calstock, Cornwall but my great Grandma is down as coming from Tavistock, Devon on the 1881 Census. MURRAY - Ashington, Longhirst Station, Blyth, Heworth, Elsdon, Otterburn - Dad's paternal line. Possibility of links with Hawick but unconfirmed. LUMSDEN - Forest Hall (paternal great Grandma's sister married a George Lumsden from Forest Hall. The Lumsden's owned a fairly sizeable garage from what my Dad remembers. If I can trace them I might just get my Dad's Grandma's maiden name. WOOD - West Sleekburn, Durham, Chester-le-Street,Stakeford LEATHARD - West Sleekburn WATTS - Coventry - Mum's maternal line NORTON - London (not sure which part yet), Nottingham, Coventry - Mum's paternal line GLENN & PAYNE - Coventry - Mum's great great and great, great, great MORGAN, WALTERS, SAT(T)IN, LANCEY, HINKS & BRITCHER - Glamorgan and Monmouthshire Lesley Morgan (nee Murray) Member of Cornwall FHS Member of Northumberland & Durham FHS Member of Coventry FHS
Greetings All. My thanks to Ian Holmes, president of the Alberta Genealogical Society for sending me scans of an article by Duncan Thorne that appeared on page A7 the Edmonton Journal of Sunday 27 January 2002. This is an excellent article of about 1/2 page and makes mention of a number of people that have been active in our campaign to regain access to Historic Census -- Lucy McRae, Ian Holmes and Bill Waiser. For a change, this article does not just quote representatives of StatCan and repeat their non-existant 'promise'. It presents our side of the issue and mentions our upcoming Court action to obtain a writ of mandamus to obtain release of the 1906 Census records. All in all, I would consider it to be a well balanced article. I have not as yet been able to locate the article on the website of the Edmonton Journal, but hope that it will be placed online. We would like to see more articles of this caliber. Happy Hunting. Gordon A. Greetings All. As of this morning the so-called 'Compromise Solution' being pushed by Statistics Canada at the Town Hall meetings is now accessible on the Post 1901 Census Project website located at the URL following my signature. I would encourage all to have a look at it -- particularly those intending to attend one of the Town Hall meetings. The various sections of this document have links to my critiques of those sections. It includes a summary of my assessment of the 'compromise'. The terms of this 'compromise' are so restrictive as to be little better than no access at all. Reports and presentations from those attending the Town Hall meetings are being added as fast as I receive them and am able to prepare the webpages. Ottawa, Halifax and Toronto are up now but I have not received reports from all presenters. Although those attending meetings are advised that the Environics website will be updated within 24 hours of the meetings, that does not appear to be happening. No reports for Montreal or Fredericton have yet been posted. Charlottetown should be posted on their website (http://erg.environics.net/) tomorrow. We shall see. The meeting for St. John's is scheduled for tomorrow. Hopefully the snow storms will be over and done with by the time of the meetings. I look forward to receiving reports on those meetings. Meetings coming up next week are for Winnipeg, Regina, and Edmonton on the 23rd, 25th and 28th respectively. I still have a lot of blanks on my list of those making presentations. If you have not done so already, let me know if you are intending to attend or make a presentation. I look forward to receiving your reports and presentations following each meeting. The Vancouver meeting to be held on 30 January (rescheduled without known notice from 4 February). Along with some that are travelling some distance to attend, I will be making a presentation at the evening session. None of these, however, will have travelled as far as someone from Virginia who travelled 900 miles/km (?) to make a presentation at the meeting in Fredericton, NB. I will be attending both sessions of the Vancouver meeing and look forward to meeting many of those who I have had email correspondence with. For those unable to attend meetings, Statistics Canada has advised that written submissions will be accepted by Environics. Send them to [email protected] . Any such submissions should be received by Environics no later than the end of January. Terms of their contract require their report to be submitted to Statistics Canada by 15 February 2002. With all that is happening at this time I am afraid that my updating of the MP and Senator Scoreboards is taking a back seat. I have a few changes to add at this time and will get at those as soon as I am able. In the meantime, letters to our government representative are still required, asking for their support. Keep your messages polite and respectful. Some may have responded with a positive response that does not yet show up on the Scoreboard. Senator Cools is one of those who have responded with an expression of support yet shown on the Scoreboard. Happy Hunting. Gordon A. Hello Fellow Listers, I am researching the WATTS name. I have Emma WATTS born 21 July 1833 to David WATTS and Elizabeth WATTS (nee TOWERS). Emma was born in Westbury-on-Severn, GLOUCS, England. I have found them on the 1851 Census by Gordon Beavington as follows: East Dean, Section VI WATTS, David, 50, labourer, born Wickwar " , Elizabeth, 50, wife born Westbury " , Emma, 18, dau " " " , James, 16, son " " " , George, 12, son " " " , Mary Ann 9, dau " " Emma WATTS married John Church PYM in High Wycombe, BUCKS on June 8, 1861. Emma and John PYM are my great x3 grandparents. At the time of Emma's marriage her father, David WATTS, was listed as a tailor. Does anyone have any knowledge and/or connection to this WATTS family? Thanks in advance, Carrie Hawkins, Ontario, CANADA

Really! Use to be just one list--when did the WATT list start? Doesn't seem like a very good idea, considering the cross over of the two spellings in many families. Oh well, just Watt I need--another listserv to have to wade thru!!! Thanks Dick for letting me know. Greetings All I have been living on my computer since my return from Calgary Wednesday night. I have just sent files to add pages to the Post 1901 Census Project website (located at the URL following my signature) that contain reports and presentations of those attending and/or making presentations at the Town Hall meetings being held by Statistics Canada. I expect that they will be loaded to the server sometime Monday. The files sent contain all reports that I have received for the meetings in Ottawa, Halifax, and Toronto. I would suggest that anyone intending to participate in, or observe, the upcoming meetings in other location, should read the reports on these pages to get an idea of what to expect when attending. There are a number of particpants that have not yet sent me a report, or copy of their presentations, and I would request that they do so, so that they may be added to the website and complete the picture of what is going on. My list of projected particpants for the upcoming meetings has a lot of empty space. If you are scheduled to speak at a meeting and have not already done so, please let me know at what meetings you will participate. The tender for contract for these meetings called for seating for up to 100 spectators. Attendance at meetings held to date have had far less than full attendance. As I have observed before, the worst thing that we can do is to have empty slots for presenters and empty seats for observers. I would encourage anyone that is able to attend these meetings and show our interest in regaining public access to Historic Census records. Meetings held so far have all had time for brief comments by members of the audience. You may not feel like making a full presentation but this may give you a chance to express your support in a few short sentences. Presenters should make mention of the following points. -- knowledge of access after 92 years will not lessen participation in Census or trust in Statistics Canada, but withholding of these records might. -- the 'compromise solution' or 'third option' is not acceptable in any way, shape or form. -- thirty years of discussion is enough -- the time has come to act. Either accept Bill S-12 as a government Bill and see it passed into law, or take steps to act on the recommendations of the Report of the Expert Panel on Access to Historic Census Records. Meetings coming up this week are at Fredericton, Charlottetown, and St. John's on the 14th, 16th, and 18th respectively. Lets do our best to fill up all speakers slots and have a full house in the audience. Happy Hunting. Gordon A. My GGgrandfather Thomas Henry Watts, s/o Thos Watts and Lavinia Huntley, was b 1805 in Anson Co, NC. When he was 54 years old, he married Ida Rose Helton/Hilton in Union Co, NC. They lived and raised a family in Mt Croghan, Chesterfield Co, SC, which is just across the state line from Union Co, NC. His age is verified by multiple census records, and I have a copy of the marriage record. Is anyone missing a Thos H Watts? I am wondering if he had another family before his marriage to Rosa. Also, is anyone else researching the Watts/Huntley line of Anson/Union Co, NC and Chesterfield Co, SC? I would love to share and compare info, as I have been working on this family for a number of years. chp Name: Thomas Henry WATTS Birth: 23 Jun 1805 Death: 8 Aug 1879 Occupation: Farmer Religion: Baptist Father: Thomas WATTS ( b ca1763 prob VA - d1841 NC) Mother: Lavina "Vinney" HUNTLEY (1770->1850) Marriage: 28 Feb 1859 Union Co, NC Spouse: Rosa Ida HELTON Birth: 18 Jun 1838 Chesterfield Co, SC Father: HELTON Children 1 M: John Dudley WATTS Birth: 8 Oct 1859 2 F: Mary Elizabeth "Mollie" WATTS Birth: 25 Jun 1860 Pageland, Chesterfield Co, SC 3 M: N Thomas WATTS Birth: ca 1863 4 F: Annie Lillian WATTS Birth: 8 Jun 1864 5 M: Townly Blair "Town" WATTS Birth: 18 Mar 1869 6 M: Gary Henry WATTS Birth: 15 Aug 1875 7 M: Douglas WATTS 8 M: Jerome Darrow "Rome" WATTS Birth: 20 Feb 1870 Chesterfield Co, SC Notes for Thomas Henry WATTS There is such a disparity in the ages of Thomas and Rosa that I believe he may have been married to someone else first. He could in fact have another grown family. We may never have proof of this, however.
