I'm a first-timer, so be gentle. My gggrandmother was Ursulena Lewick; I do not know her maiden name. She was born in 1822, died 1883. Married John Lewick c 1845, probably in Virginia. He died in Pennsylvania perhaps 10 years later, and she remarried a man named WATTS. She had at least two children with her second husband, Frank and Sarah. Sarah apparently joined the Sisters of Charity in Chicago and was known there as Sister Eulalia. I believe she was Catholic, although I couldn't say for sure. Obviously, I know very little about this person. Does any of this ring a bell with anyone?
Chuck, I dont know who these people are in this marriage, but I live in Iowa, and can research this further if needed. Let me know! Hey ALL you WATTS Researchers, It is interesting to me that I do not see any of you uploading your WATTS GEDCOMs!!!??? I bet some of you have information that I and other could use! Why not give it a try? Take out the living! Don't know how? Maybe I can help you! Waymon Griffin Findmykin@aol.com
My line is Watts or Watt. I see both in family name but only list one to make family tree happy. To be honest after looking at Hogg, Houge, Hoggue, Hogan, Hogue, Ponsby, Poinsby, Pounsby, Ponsbuy ect in a line the s just sliped my mind. The spelling get worst when I hit Germans. When I first started I miss a generation because I did not look a different spelling. They are not alway the same line but sometime they are. Census takers, ect. where not always the best speller. I found my grandfather Thomas listed as Fay. His nick name was Tay. You have to look at the big picture. Kathy

WATT could definitely be a variation of WATTS. In my case, my last name is WATTS and I am descended from WATT. The "s" was added to our name in the U.S. in the early 19th Century by my Scottish great-great-grandfather Hugh Stuart WATT. Family legend has it that Hugh was trying to distance himself from the Scottish (who, supposedly, were not highly regarded in this country) and added the "s", which was more English. In fact, in my great-grand aunt's diary, she says that Hugh's father "admonished him thus: 'dinna come hame with an "s" on your name." Sounds a bit too conveniently poetic to be real, but my family swears by it. By the way, Don, I noticed your ancestor's names, James and John WATT. I also have those names in my family. But we are pure Scottish all the way. Can you trace any of your roots to James WATT, the Scottish inventor? I am supposedly related to him, and I have been trying to find connections from him to the aforementioned Hugh Stuart WATT. Thanks Andrew Watts New York City, NY
I seek info on Cynthia A. Watts, born 1830 in KY, married William Asbury. Her mother's name may have been Jane, born 1802 in VA. I got siblings' names from somewhere, but I haven't seen that scrap of paper in a while, so I don't know how dependable they are---Leonard born 1836; Washington, b. 1842; Meerion, b. 1844. I seem to remember seeing these names on a census record for 1850, but I have to go look that up again. That's it. I hope that strikes a chord with someone.. Thanks in advance for the help. James A. I have long been trying to identify the family of my grandfather, John WATT (no "S"), whose father was probably named James (not proven yet). My John Watt was born in TN on 23 Nov 1869--any of your Watt family get down in that area by that time? Any and all help appreciated. Bob Robert W. Strong "WHERE DO WE GO WHEN WE DIE? This is from Collins Pocket Reference: Walter/Walters Not by origin Scottish, but the basis of several Scottish names. Walter is a Germanic forename consisting of the elements wald (`rule') and heri ('army'). The Normans brought the name to these islands, and usually elided the ' l ', giving the abbreviation Wat. Patrick Walter is recorded in Kirkcudbright in 1376, but thereafter the name is fairly thin on the ground. Walterson is found on Orkney and Shetland. Watson By far the commonest of the Walter derivatives, this surname is among Scotland's top twenty; in England it has to share the honors with Watts, Watkins and Watkinson, forms not native to this country. John Watson was a citizen of Edinburgd in the late 14th century; Robert Watsoun appears in Aberdeen in 1402, Thomas Watson in Dunipace in 1426, and Sir Donald Watsone in Moray in 1493. By the 16th century the name was becoming very common in the Lowlands and in the Northeast. George Watson, born in Edinburgh in 1654 , made a fortune as a merchant banker; he endowed a hospital (orphanage) for children, which became George Watson's College in 1870. Watt Another of the Walter-derivatives this surname is common throughout Scotland but particularly in the Northeast where in some rural districts it used to flourish almost to the exclusion of all others. It was also common to Ulster, and may have been re-imported thence in recent years. Alexander Wat is recorded in Panmure in Angus in 1512, Walter Wat was in Brechin in 1586, and Pactrick Watt in Turriff in 1609. The double-diminutive version Wattie is still current in Aberdeen. James Watt, engineer, inventor and pioneer of steam power, was born in Greenock in 1736: the unit of power known as the watt was named after him. Sir Robert Watson-Watt, born in Brechin in 1892, played a major part in the development of rader. > -----Original Message----- > From: Duckettgen@aol.com [mailto:Duckettgen@aol.com] > Sent: Friday, August 07, 1998 1:09 PM > To: WATTS-L@rootsweb.com > Subject: [WATTS-L] Just WATT? > > > I know this is the WATTS mailing list but I expected to see more > WATT entrys. > After all, WATT is just a variation of WATTS.
