Rhonda - The Watts family history as compiled by Fred Rutledge has a section on Vincent, the son of Thomas Watts Jr. Vincent moved to TN and his descendants have Cherokee blood. If you'll send me your address, I'll mail a copy to you. It contains an interesting account of John Watts II (Young Tassel) who signed the "Removal Treaty". Drs. Clarence and Katala Williams furnished that material. Their e-mail address is - or was - CWilli2569@aol.com. They would have a good bit of info. Carolyn
I am researching my line of Watts' from South Carolina. George Washington Watts, my grandfather was said to have been from Laurens, SC born about 1858-60? He had three brothers, William John (Bill) born about 1859?, Gus born ??? and James born about 1880-81? George "Wash" Watts married Margaret Moreland in Paulding County, GA in 1894 and had 13 children, of which eleven survived to adulthood. My father, James Curtis Watts, was the twelfth child. Bill Watts married Emily or Emma Austin circa 1889-1892 and had ten children. The one of the eldest boys Bogan Watts were born in Ora, SC. in 1890. Gus Watts (half-brother) married Caroline and had six children. James Watts was born in Lawrence, SC. He married three times and had one son, Emerson Watts. George Watts died in 1932 in Los Angeles, CA, William (Bill) died in 1935 in GA, Gus died ????? in GA and James died in 1962 in Chicago, Ill. I don't have any hard evidence, other than the SS application of Bogan that places anyone in SC. On the 1900 - 1920 census the brothers are listed as Black or Mulatto. Has anyone researching the Watts line from this area come across any papers from your ancestors that possibly list these brothers in property records, wills, deeds or bills of sale? Does anyone have any information on the Watts Mill area or the plantation that was there? Is anyone else researching a Black line of Watts' from SC? I am greatly interested in sharing information but this is as far back as I can go at the present. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Easy Skier@aol.com

I've posted information from Freda, the off list cousin, before. Here's more. Chuck On the 1870 San Joaquin County census in Dents Township, Page 18, FHC Film 545,585, there is listed at House #31/31 Clint Garrison 28 male white Farmer 6000 4000 born TN Augusta 17 female white Keeps house born MO (Augusta is Isaac's and Zelpha Jane Kenedy's daughter) (Clint & Augusta m Oct 1867) at House #32/32 is I. V. Watts 43 male white Farmer Born Ohio Elmira 32 female white Keeping house 2000 1000 Born VA Maggie 4 female white born Cal Helen 16 female white born MO Cora 14 female white born MO two males also in household Marion(?) Grainger 25 a farmer with $500 pers. prop. born Tenn James Baker 22 Miner with $2000. pers. prop. born Ill This has to be Isaac B. Watts. Wonder if we can find anything on Helen and Cora. Maggie is believed to be the daughter of Clint and Augusta. Isaac's son John Kenedy Watts was not near these two in 1870. However, he got married there in Aug 1870 and the above census record was dated 8 Jul 1870. Next time down I will check for the location of the Meekers (his first wife's name) and he may be located near them. May just have to read the whole Stanislaus census. What is frustrating is that William Watts is not there. I am running out of clues. Rufus Clark and Lucinda are not there either. John Kenedy Watts is on the 1880 census record of Tulare Co., CA. FHC Film 1254085. He is in ED 99 Page 17. He is 31 years old married, a farmer, and sick with the Fever ______(?) to the extent that he cannot carry on ordinary business. He was born in Missouri, his father born in Ohio, his mother in PA. His wife is Sarah E., she is 33, born in Ark, father born in TN, mother born in TN. He has a son named Marion. He is 9 in 1880, (born in 1871, has to be the son of his first wife), father b in Missouri, mother born in Arkansas. He has a daughter listed. Her name is Della A. and she is age 3. She was born in CA, father b in MO, mother b in AR. John Kenedy Watts is NOT on the 1900 census but Sarah E. Watts is. She is in Fresno Co., CA. FHC Film 1240086, ED 12, Sheet 14, Township 5. Sarah is in house 305. Sarah is 53, b Mar 1847, a widow who born 2 children and only 1 still living. Now she is not the mother of Marion, so she and Isaac must have had another child that did not survive. Maybe cemetery records will show something. She is engaged in Farming and she owns with a mortgage, 270 acres. Now need to check to see if John K died in Tulare or Fresno. Might be that county line changed and they were in the same spot. Anyway in her house hold is her daughter Della A. She is 23, b Jan 1877 and has been married for 2 years to Fred C Scott who is 25 born in 1875. Fred is listed as a Salesman (Pianos). They have one son Allen G. Scott born Mar 1899 in CA. Sarah's niece Sarah A. Reynolds born Jan 1884 now 16 years old is living or at least visiting her on census day. She also has a Servant named Samuel Ransom(?) age 51, divorced, living in the household. He was born in Oregon, and is listed as a Farm Laborer. Will carry this Scott on down to 1920 and see what materializes. Just might be a current generation our there that has some answers. On the Stanislaus Co., CA 1880 census, FHC Film 445465, ED 94, Sheet 3, Clinton G. Garrison is 38, born in TN with wife Augusta 25 born in MO, daughter Maggie D. age 14 b in CA and sons Wm H. age 5 and E. W. age 3 with 3 servants. (E. W. is listed as Walter E. later in life). It appears that the Maggie D listed in Isaac's household in 1870 is the daughter of Augusta and the granddaughter of Isaac B. Maggie D. must have died prior to 1893 however, as she is not listed in the obituary of Augusta, only the husband and two grown sons. I thought this very odd. In the same township in Tulare Co in 1880, on page 27 is a Cleon B. Watts, age 46 b. in KY. Isaac Watts and Sarah Almira is listed on the IGI, listing film 178045, Pg 2, Ord. # 23677, Temple Logan. Don't know if I can see this film or not. Will work on that next time. In the Ancestral File I found Elizabeth Longley b ca 1780 Baltimore, MD m. to Charles Watts. Also the records that Charles Watts b 30 Jun 1780 Baltimore, Baltimore MD chr 31 Oct 1786 at Baltimore, Baltimore MD at Gay Street and Court House Plaza Zion German Lutheran Church, that Charles is the son of Richard Watts and Elizabeth (maiden name unknown). This Richard Watts died before 15 Apr 1807 in Baltimore, MD. Besides Charles they had a son named William Watts born 15 Jun 1782 in Baltimore, MD. Carolyn and Catherine, I am researching the WATTS family too and some of you names are in my WATTS family. James Watts married Mary Perkins of Maryland abt 1760. They were in Greenbrier, VA abt 1769. Their daughter Mary Watts married William Williams who was born 1757 in Fairfax, VA. Mary and William were married 1795 in Greenbrier, Va. I believe The Williams were Quakers and the Watts family was involved with the early Methodist Church in Maryland. James Watts son James Watts, Jr was a Methodist circuit preacher from 1804 until he died in 1857. I also have Boggs marying into my Williams family. I have not been able to go back any further. I was wondering if you have heard of any of these people? I can only carry the line back to my grandfather, John Watt, b. 23 Nov 1869, in TN. He died 18 Jan 1919 in Fostoria, TX. Know little about him other than that he was suppose to have been orphaned as a child (around 10 or so) and had a brother/half-brother named "Bert" who was blind. I have inferred that his father's name was James, based solely on a naming idiosyncrocy of John's own children: he gave all of his children only ONE given name, EXCEPT his oldest son, James Francis Watt. "Francis" was the first name John's father-in-law, so I am "leaping" to the conclusion that the eldest son was named after the two grandfathers. If you know of any possible connections, I would really appreciate knowing about them. Many thanks, Bob Robert W.
