    3. Hi again I have the Campbell Co VA Wills and Inventories for 1782-1847 and no James Winston Watts listed. Annette Thomas Markham wrote: > Who on the list has information or has done family research on the Watts of Lynchburg, Virginia, and Campbell County. Col. James Winston Watts moved from Bedford County, Virginia to Lynchburg in 1868, a very influential citizen of that community and quite wealthy. Does anyone have any information on this Watts Family, as I am trying to complete this portion of my Watts Family File? He was a Business Partner of my Great- grandfather Benjamin R. Markham of Bedford County, and was a cousin to my Great-grandmother Jane C. Lee Markham who was the daughter of Thomas Newell Lee. of Bedford County, Virginia. 3. If no one answered you, I found a copy both at our State Historical Society Library, WI State Historical Society Library and our local college library. With Library of Congress library numbers check the CS section. Most of that is genealogical related books. Also there is a large write up in the books on the Valentine Papers on the Watts family and Winston family. 3. I have a Benjamin Franklin Watts born 11 Dec 1823 in TN possibly in the area of Maury or Giles County. I have reason to believe that his father may have been a Lewis Watts born ca1798 VA. Lewis and Benjamin F. Watts are both found listed in Giles County 1850 census. Benjamin F. married first Nancy E. Robinson 1850 Maury Co, TN. By 1856 Benjamin F. was in Weakley Co where his son Benjamin F. Watts Jr was born. Benjamin F. Sr married 2nd Elizabeth Rhoda Miller in 1859 in Weakley Co, TN. Sometime between 1873 and 1884 the family moved to Ozark Co, MO. My Benjamin Franklin Watts, Sr had sons Benjamin F. Jr, Robert E. Lee, and Thomas Jefferson Watts also 4 daughters Cora, Sarah, Mary Ellen, and Mary Susan. (a Mary by each wife). I would appreciate corresponding with anyone who knows anything about this family. 1. [WATTS-L] Deadline for Post 1901 Census Petitions Extended -- Volunteers Requested
    2. Gordon A. WATTS
    3. Greetings listers In view of the prorogation of Parliament, and the fact that during October there are a number of activities that offer the opportunity for gathering more signatures on petitions, it has been decided to extend the present deadline for getting petitions in until 31 October 1999. One of the activities that can offer an opportunity for gathering signature is the Global Family History Fair '99 to be held in Milton, Ontario, October 16/17 1999. If you are hearing about Global Family History Fair for the first time, check out the official web site at << http://globalgenealogy.com/genfair >> Lots of great family history research workshops, vendor area, thirty buildings and exhibits with costumed interpreters, War of 1812 re-enactors, world class quilt exhibition and more... Rick Roberts has offered to donate table space for a CENSUS CAMPAIGN table. However with his other responsibilities regarding the two day fair, he is unable to supply the people to man the table and collect petition signatures. We are therefore looking for a handful of local volunteers to look after this. Responsibilities would be to prepare some basic signage and to provide copies of the petitions to be signed. As always the petitions are downloadable from the Post 1901 Census Project page. Volunteers would have access to the site, parking, etc. (not the workshops) free of charge. If you are willing to volunteer for this please contact me as soon as possible. The first emailer who indicates their willingness to do so will be given the task of co-ordinating the others re: times for duty, making signs etc. I will put you in contact with each other and let you know how to contact Rick for site access. As always, thanks to everyone for their support. Happy Hunting. Gordon A. 2. Gordon A. WATTS
    3. Greetings listers Subsequent to my announcement that the House of Commons would be starting up on 20 September 1991, the following was copied from a Government of Canada web site. "The Governor General informed the Speaker of the House of Commons that the 1st Session of the 36th Parliament will prorogue as of September 18, 1999. The Throne Speech, which will open the 2nd Session of the 36th Parliament will be on Tuesday, October 12, 1999 at 2:30 p.m. Prorogation is the ceremonial ending of a parliamentary session. All pending business before the two Houses is abolished and all committee work is halted between the announcement of the prorogation and the commencement of the new session." 1. [WATTS-L] Fw: The Hill Times, Ottawa, Canada -- A Reprint
    2. Gordon A. WATTS
    3. ----- Original Message ----- From: Muriel M. Davidson Sent: Tuesday, 21 September, 1999 3:51 AM Subject: The Hill Times, Ottawa, Canada -- A Reprint (May be forwarded to newspapers or lists) The following reprint from The Hill Times was forwarded by The Honourable Lorna Milne, Senate of Canada. The writer is unknown. The first paragraph seems misleading -- we are hoping to have the 1911 census records released in 2003, but to date there has not been any vote. It was the Statistics Canada 1998-99 "Annual Report on Access to Information and Privacy" which was released in August, 1999. Muriel M. Davidson, 25 Crestview Ave., Brampton, ON L6W 2R8 <Farquhar@netcom.ca> ============================================================ MPS AND SENATORS KEEP UP THE FIGHT TO SEE 1911 CENSUS RESULTS From: The Hill Times, Ottawa August 30, 1999 1911 was a good year ... Well. it might have been, but it's hard to know if we can't get our hands on the census from that year. According to the Statistics Canada 1998-99 Annual Report on Access to Information and Privacy, which was released last week, the stats gurus can't release census reports to the general public until 92 years after the fact. This is in keeping with the Privacy Act and means anyone wanting to see the 1911 census will have to wait another four years, which some Members of Parliament and Senators find unreasonable. A major letter-writing campaign has been going strong since the spring of 1998, followed by a motion by Ontario Liberal Senator Lorna Milne last November. Senator Milne is continuing to work on a private member's bill that she hopes will be brought forward this year. Among the supporters in the Commons to open up census reports are Ontario Liberal MP Murray Calder, Nova Scotia Tory MP Gerald Keddy, and Alberta Reform MP Jason Kenney. Mr. Keddy is still in the drafting stage of a private member's bill dealing with the issue and Mr. Kenney put a motion forward on Feb. 11, known as Motion 571. The minister responsible for Statistics Canada, Industry Minister John Manley, has brought forward two options to allow for easier access. The first would be to amend the Statistics Act, to allow for the release and transfer of the 2001 Census to the National Archives. The second option would be to alter the confidentiality provisions of the act so that all censuses taken from 1911 to now would be placed within public reach. Supporters of better access say it's imperative that the public has access to the information for reasons of historical significance. Not having access to this sort of documentation would prevent individuals from easily researching their family tree or completing biographical works. The last census records to be released and transferred to the National Archives took place in 1993 for the year 1901. ============================================================

    2. Gordon A. WATTS
    3. Greetings listers. Well, my telephone interview with Peter Warren is just over and all things considered I think that it went fairly well. We got a message out from Coast to Coast and I hope that it might trigger some more activity in our Census campaign. I had a couple of stumbles but I think the end result was satisfactory. Peter finished by saying he would keep track of how things were going in the months to come so I will make a point of keeping him informed. The first caller accepted was Elizabeth Taylor from Ottawa and I think her call was just what was needed to accent the situation. She sounded far less nervous than what I did. Thanks Elizabeth. By the way - her call was not prearranged, she emailed me when the interview was over. Happy Hunting Gordon A. 1. [WATTS-L] Peter Warren Talk Show interview
    2. Gordon A. WATTS
    3. Greetings Listers As a result of information packages that I made up and distributed to various major newspapers, television stations, and radio talk show hosts in the Vancouver area yesterday, I have just received a phone call from the producer of the Peter Warren talk show. She asked if I would be available for a 15 minute telephone interview about Post 1901 Census tomorrow (Sunday) at 3:30 PM PDT. Peter Warren's talk show is on the WIC network (CKNW locally) and if it is not carried nationally, it covers at least the Western provinces. CKNW does broadcast over the net using RealAudio but I am unsure to what extent. I am currently listening to the Saturday Peter Warren show over the net so I assume the show will be available Sunday as well. The URL to access CKNW is http://www.cknw.com While the producer of the show did not specifically say so, I am hopeful that Peter will accept calls on the subject following my interview. I only hope that I do not make a complete ass of myself and do more harm to the cause than good. Will have to prepare some notes to help me put things across in a positive way. Happy Hunting.
