    1. Lucy Watson Lovelace Cantrell MD>NC>SC, c1761-18??
    2. Greg Lovelace
    3. Hello, Watson-folk I am new to the list, and am trying to chase down evidence to either prove or refute an oral tradition in my branch of the Lovelace family of Rutherford Co., NC. That tradition states that Barton Lovelace of MD married Lucy Watson and had three sons. Before 1790, Barton supposedly died, and Lucy Watson Lovelace married Abraham Cantrell. Lucy and Abraham and the three Lovelace boys, still young, ended up in the area of Spartanburg Co., SC. The Lovelace boys ended up in Rutherford Co., NC, right across the state line from Spartanburg Co., in the early 1800s and began raising families, which continue there to this day. In support of this tradition, the 1776 census of Montgomery Co., MD shows the family of Samuel and Sary Watson, including their daughter Lucy age 15 only two houses away from the family of Benjamin and Sary Lovlis, including their son Barton, age 19. I also have the marriage returns of one Rev. William Threlkeld which states that he performed the marriage of Bartin Loveless and Lucy Watson on 11 Jun 1778. I am lacking any solid evidence of the death of Barton Lovelace, who is said to have drowned crossing the Potomac River. I also have no solid evidence of the remarriage of Lucy Watson Lovelace to Abraham Cantrell. Cantrell researchers claim that Abraham did marry a Watson woman, his second marriage, and that their first son was born c1790 in Orange Co., NC and named Watson Cantrell. Past the birth of Watson Cantrell, I have nothing at all on Lucy Watson Lovelace Cantrell. Abraham is in the 1790 Spartanburg Co., SC census, and in the early 1800s posted bond for the marriage of Asa Lovelace and Susannah Hardin in Rutherford Co., NC. He also sold land in Rutherford Co. to both Asa and Nathan Lovelace, who were two of the three Lovelace sons of Lucy Watson Lovelace. Abraham reportedly died in SC. No record of Lucy's death. Are any of you familiar with this Watson woman or with the names Cantrell or Lovelace/less? If so, I would dearly like to hear from you. We have been beathing this horse now for 10 years, and it sure would be nice to find SOMETHING! <grin> Thank you in advance for your time. Peace, Part of the Tree, Greg Lovelace Maintainter of the LOVELACE list on RootsWeb
