    1. [WATSON] Robert James Watson 1881 & 1891

    3. Good afternoon, This is my first visit to this site. I am researching a great uncle Robert James Watson He was born 7th. February 1876 in Highgate, Middlesex. I believe from his C.V. that his father was o romHartford and his mother from Cornwall, but these are unconfirmed. I cannot find him in my LDS 1881 census however the original 1881 Census gives a James R. Watson age 5 of 14 Cumberland St. Islington, London, whose father was a George Watson, birth place Barkway, Hertford In the 1891 census the son appears as Robert Watson living in Hackney with his parents, so probably the 1881 census contains a typographic error in reversing is Christian names on that occassion. The 1871 Census gives young George (then 19) living at 15 Paul's Alley, St. Giles without Cupplegate, London In 1895 Robert James Watson joined the 2nd. Middlesex Volunteer Artillery. >From the great City of London archives he was then in 1900 a Corporal in the City of London Imperial Volunteers and sailed for South Africa, returning sick later that year. 13th. April 1901 he joined the 24th. Battalion Imp. Yeo. and sailed that month again for the South African campaign. By 1902/3 he was living in India, returning to England in the mid to late 1930s. I would be most interested to know if anyone has come across this family, and assumming that the above George is Robert's father (any suggestions about confirming this other than obtaining birth certificates etc. would be appreciated) Chris retired mariner Norfolk
