Mr. Watson was born in Gainsbro, Lincolnshire, England in the year of 1818. At the age of 13 he was apprenticed as to an engineer, and afterwards went to sea for many years. He has had many exciting and dangerous experiences, having been wrecked several times, thrown among tribes who were cannibals, taken part in minor wars, was wounded in the war between Mexico and the United States, lying in a dangerous condition for seven months. At one time he was a member of the Merchant Service of New York and also of the well known Black Ball Line. He spent many years whaling, meeting with exciting experiences. Becoming weary of the sea he came to the colonies in 1850 spending a few years upon the station of Sir Joshua Bell in Queensland known as "Jimbour". He came on to Sydney in 1853 and settled in Balmain, which at that time was little better than a scrub. He became associated with ferry business from its infancy, eventually becoming proprietor of the Bald Rock Ferry which was afterwards formed into the company of John Watson & Co. and sold in 1887 to the Balmain Steam Ferry Company. Under his direction several improvements were effected in ferry steamers construction as he aimed always at comfort, speed and cleanliness. In 1865 Mr. Watson visited England taking 3 months each way; on his return he removed from the point (?) of this suburb and went, as many friends told him, into the bush, by building and taking up his residence, in Smith Street. He at one time took a lively interest in local matters and was an alderman of the Borough Council. He was liberal in his views, generous and kind hearted; those who knew him felt the value of his friendship and his pocket was ever open to those in distress. It might be said of him "Friends he had many, enemies he had none". He was a good master, a loving husband and an indulgent father...."

    3. Looking for any information on who Martha was, or who she was married to. She was born about 1790 somewhere in Maryland, and family moved to Kentucky, believe Washington Co., and then later to Missouri. Here are some of the family on the Pulaski Co. Missouri 1850 Census. There is also a Cornelius Watson, right next door, most likely the son. Later a Richard Watson shows up, and we're trying to determine if that also might be the father's name??? 2. Bryanna Olson
    3. With traffic moving here I'll add two more John Watson's to the mix. My proven is John A WATSON was born 10 Dec 1833 in OH, most likely Monroe or Nobel county depending on when the county lines changed. Johns father is Jacob WATSON b 1808 OH, died Switzerland, Monroe,OH burried in Cameron Cemetery, Adams twp, Monroe, OH . Mother is Hesther __?__. b 1808 OH, died 27 Jan 1888, Petis co MO. There is only one concrete clue to Jacob's parents and that is in a book of genealogical data that was put together by Monroe co Historical when families submitted information. There is an outline on Nathanial that gives his fathers name as John WATSON, purchacing land in Adams twp in 1816, with son Jacob living not far away in Sunfish twp. Other than census records indicating the truth of the above persons living in an area, I have yet to prove kinship. Jacob and Hesther's children are: 1. Jacob S WATSON b 2 May 1828 in Monroe co OH. m Dorcus Marshall, d 1 Nov 1897 in West county WV. ? married twice 2. Mary WATSON b 1830 Monroe co OH 3. George WATSON b 1832 Monroe co OH 4. John Andrew WATSON b 10 Dec 1833 in Monroe co OH. m Matilda ATKINSON, second Martha SHERROD, died in Herington, Dickinson, KS 2 Oct 1920, burried in Clarks Creek Cemetery, Morris co KS. 5. Rebecca WATSON b 1836 Monroe co OH 6. Abigail WATSON b 1838 Monroe co OH 7. Merlinda WATSON b 1840 Monroe co OH 8. David WATSON b 1842 Monroe co OH 9. 2. My Watson great-great-grandmother was born about 1827 or 1832 in Pennsylvania, and, according to Census records, her parents were born in Virginia. She was known as CHRISTINA (or CHRISTIANN) WATSON; I do not know her parents' names. In 1850, she was living with her husband, HENRY MILLER, and baby daughter, MARY JANE, in Bedford County, South Woodbury Township. CHRISTINA and HENRY apparently lived all their lives in the South Woodbury/Martinsburg area. CHRISTINA was still alive in 1911. Her children were: MARY JANE, ELIZABETH, JOHN W., MARTIN W., WESLEY W., AMANDA, and MALINDA. Would appreciate anything regarding CHRISTINA and her parents, grandparents or siblings. Thanks very much. 2. Rebecca Walker
    3. Just thought I'd pass this along... did you know you can find Land Patents online ? The government has a site, http://www.glorecords.blm.gov This site allows you to search by exact name or just the surname. It will search all states, or you can narrow it down to a particular state.. a particular county.... or a particular township. It will show you a listing of matching names, the county the land patent was filed in, and the land office which recorded the patent as well as the date it was recorded (or filed). Many, if not most, have actual images of the original patents and sometimes those will show other names listed as a warrantee to the patent or as heirs to the patent. I've also found that sometimes, such as in the case of one Watson, it will show the individual 's place of residence as being different from the state and county of the purchased land (he resided in Ohio but purchased land in a neighboring state). Anyway, just thought I'd pass this along in case you were unfamiliar with it. Reb

    1. [WATSON] James Watson Brick Wall
    2. Hi, I also have a James Watson brick wall. Deborah Mangen lists a ton of Watsons that ended up in Indiana, where mine did also. So, it is worth another try. James M. Watson was born about 1807 somewhere in PA, as was his wife Rebecca (?) born in about 1810. While there are at least three James Watsons in Indiana regiments in the War, (17th, 117th, and 79th) I have no proof any of these are mine. My James M. first pops up in Indianapolis, IN in the census of 1870, age 63, occupation "engine builder" (presumably railroad) living with Rebecca near son Elmer (wife Jennie Rose), a railroader. The other known child (Rebecca b. 1846) appears to have married Charles Calvert (b. 1841) Interestingly, while James M. was buried in huge Crown Hill cemetery in Indianapolis in 1886, there is no Rebecca buried there. However there are several other Watsons buried in the same lot and section: Ruth, 1906; Minnie, 1919; Martha J., 1927, and Charles C., 1935. This makes it probable but not certain that these Watsons were all related. The period between birth in PA and life in IN in 1870 leaves a large void of no information. Hopefully, someone will spot a link with one of theirs. Dick in Las Vegas

    1. [WATSON] Watson Family from England to Virginia circa 1750
    2. Mark Watson
    3. John (b. abt 1728) and Margaret "Peggy" WATSON said to have come from London, England (according to 1880 account written by great-grandson) and they settled in Virginia. Are first documented 1779 in Albemarle VA, but RW pension accounts place John and Margaret in Albemarle VA as early as 1759. Perhaps he is the John WATSON listed in nearby Orange Co., VA Tax Lists during this time... Eldest son John "Hightop" WATSON remained in Albemarle VA until his death in 1833, while most of the family appears to have migrated to Madison Co., KY by 1792. John and Margaret died in Madison Co., KY after 1805; likely before 1807. John and Margaret WATSON had the following children: John (m. Frances? Alice BIRD), Mary (m. John NICKERSON), Joseph (m. Nancy ?), Evan Thomas (m. Lucy COLEMAN), Jesse (m. Milley BALLARD) and Anne (m. William BRYANT). They were also probably the parents of Judith WATSON m. John GARDINER, David WATSON m. (1) Mary HARRIS (2) Elizabeth MAUPIN, and Elizabeth WATSON m. Samuel YEATS/YATES. Two of John "Hightop" WATSON's sons, Joab and James Bird, migrated to Madison Co., AL and later Phillips Co., AR; where I lose track of there heirs - both Joab and James Bird WATSON died in Phillips Co., AR, but I cannot locate any deed or probate records through the County Clerk concerning their wills or heirs, though I do have many of their childrens family charts from census records. John's son William is said to have married Catherine ROGERS (dau of Achilles ROGERS and Mary GEORGE), but I do not know where they were circa 1830 or later. Williams' dau Frances Ann Temple WATSON married in KY, and migrated to Missouri. Would like to know more of their other children William Booker, Mary George, and John. Mary George WATSON is said to have married a BAIRD/BIRD. Evan Thomas WATSON is my line, and I have quite a bit on information on his line, but not the original source document for the birthdates of his family which were published in a book on the COLEMAN family without citing the source. I would love to know where that information came from. Evan left Madison Co., KY about 1817 and is next found in Warren Co., KY in 1819. He moved to Texas in 1833 and died there. Jesse WATSON died 1790 in Madison Co., KY. Joseph WATSON died abt 1841 in Madison Co., KY. His wife's name was Nancy, and he had 7 children survive him, and possibly a son who died prior to 1841. I have quite a bit of information on this family, and have yet to find a single descendant researching this line. Joseph was a RW soldier. These children mostly stayed in and around Madison Co., KY beyond 1870. I am particularly interested in this branch because it was Joseph who still had the family bible of his parents in 1833 (according to Evan's RW pension). Therefore, this bible was probably in Madison Co., KY as late as the 1870's when Joseph's oldest son, John, was still living; he died in 1874. I would love to know if this ancient bible has survived. Email me if you would like further information on any of these lines. Also, I would love to add more information to fill in some gaps if anyone has some good documentation on any of the above persons. Mark

    3. It appears that there are a lot of John WATSON's and they all seem to be leading to a brick wall. My John WATSON was born about 1827 and I'm not sure where. I believe him to have come to Tennessee from Virginia or NC. He married in Rutherford County, Tennessee on February 21, 1953 to a Mary A. Haynes. His daughter Susan Elizabeth (Lizzie) WATSON is my ggrandmother. Lizzie was born in 1854 in Rutherford County, TN and married March 27, 1870 in Rutherford County, TN to John W. Windrow. She died after 1910. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Wanda ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------

    3. More brick walls.... and a bit of confusion for me. My Watson's seem to have all been known by their middle names... William HENRY Watson dob 6January 1860/62 Crawford, MO his death certificate listed Phillip Watson (VA) & Sarah Ellen Cooksey (VA) as parents. A letter of 1888 from Portland, Oregon places Wm. Henry in Elk City KS .. he's refered to as "brother" and the letter is signed by Minnie A Watson ( who refers to herself as his "true sister") and Thomas Melvin Watson. Thomas MELVIN Watson was born in MO 1863. According to ORegon records, he married Minnie A Crisler, daughter of Jacob Crisler. So... based on the letter, names in the letter, and the above, I figured Melvin and Henry were brothers.... ...until I received Melvin's death certificate which states his father is John E Watson of VA and Mary Donald of MD. Needless to say, I'm confused. Does anyone have any connection to these names.... or perhaps can offer some possible explanation.. or point me in the right (or any) direction ? Thank you for your time and assistance.................. and Happy Holidays to you all. Rebecca nightnite@juno.com

    3. My brick wall is John T. Watson, b abt 1806 in KY, according to the only census on which I can find him, 1860 Bastrop Co. TX. On 06 Sep 1838 he applied for grant of 1280 acres (as married man) Red River Co. TX, with Coleman Watson as a witness. Coleman is a son of Evan Thomas Watson but apparently Evan's son John died before my John T. On 08 Sep 1841 John T. was issued a final land grant in Bowie Co., TX & sold it soon after to W. W. WOOTON. He appears on the 1845 tax list of Sevier Co. AR but I cannot locate him in 1850. 1860 Bastrop Co. TX census, 634-590, p281B, prec 10, Bastrop P.O.: John T. Watson, 54, Farmer, $500, $1530, KY Elizabeth K. Watson 18, AR [m Wm. F. Yates, Bastrop Co. 15 Jul 1869] [NOTE: "18" might just as easily read "28"] Hulda A. Watson 15, AR [Angeline Watson m Levi Madison BARNARD 15 Jul 1869 - same day as Elizabeth m Wm F. YATES] W. H. Watson, 20 TX ["Bud" m Mary SHEPARD, Bastrop Co. 1 Apr 1866] Mary W. Watson 10, AR [m Joseph WHITE, Bastrop Co. 22 Feb 1872] Eliza A. Watson 7, TX [m James C. SHARP, 17 Oct 1872; m Joseph Toliver "Tol" CLARK 11 Feb 1891] Eliza Watson's family history says that John T. disappeared during the Civil War on a cotton-trading trip to Brownsville, TX and that she, being only about 10, was raised by relatives of Edna HOCKER, who later married Eliza & Joseph's son, Alva CLARK. I do not know who those relatives are. Eliza's death cert. reported that her mother was a "Miss Birkhana," probably a corruption of the surname BUCKHANNON & BUCHANAN. Whether this is also the mother of the other children is uncertain. There is no probate in Bastrop Co. TX & no land transfers. He probably owned the land reported in 1860 by virtue of a deed with the owner holding the mortgage. Other records of Bastrop Co. indicate that such deeds are not registered until the mortgage is paid. If it is never paid, the land reverts to the owner with no paperwork to indicate there ever was a sale. The 1870 census of Bastrop Co. records no inhabitants of the community called Red Rock, suggesting it was missed, lost or the entire community upped and moved away on or after 15 Jul 1869 (when Elizabeth married William Yates & Hulda Angeline m Levi Barnard), to return by 22 Feb 1872 (when Mary W. married Joseph White). John's first identified child (though there could be earlier ones) was Sarah Jane Watson, b Jan 1836 in AR, who married Franklin SHEPARD. His next identified child is William H. "Bud" Watson (who married Franklin's sister Mary SHEPARD), b 07 Jun 1840 in Bowie Co. TX. John is not listed on the 1840 "census" of TX but it is not a census but a land-owner's tax list. Since his land grant was not finalized, he might not have been listed. You can see my Watson chart at http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?db=dwbender I believe he is related to the WATSONs of Logan & Lincoln Co. KY but I have found no proof. There is another WATSON family, including a John T. and a William H. in Bastrop Co. TX in the same time frame, but I cannot tie them to mine despite many tempting coincidences. I have worked on this line since 1991 with little to show for it. Diane Bender POB 178 Washington Grove MD 20880
