    1. Border Reiver DNA Project
    2. John Carr
    3. Thank you for your effort with this DNA project. I just returned from my first (short unfortunately) visit to the border region of Scotland and England. Particularly I visited Kelso and Jedburgh locals, which are noted as Kerr family locations. I was delighted to see faces that could easily pass as my family members. I was surprised however to note the small number of Kerr surnames in the local phone directories and in the few cemeteries I visited. Based on the habit of referring to specific regions as the seat of a given surname, I expected to see a fair portion of the local population with Kerr derivative surnames. Instead, I found perhaps 40 Kerr listings, 2 Carr listings and few other Kerr derivatives in the directories and only two Kerr family gravestones, both from the 1800's. There were however many many other names of the ancient Border Reiver families listed in the directories and headstones. This, to me points out the importance of a broader DNA search than just a single surname. So, thanks again for under taking this effort. I will support it with my DNA and I hope many others will as well. While surnames may change between generations for various reasons, DNA can be altered only by God, what better evidence of lineage can be had. 1. London Watsons
    2. Chris Woods
    3. Dear Mark, Unfortunately I do not know much about my London Watson's ancestors however here is what is known: My gt. uncle was Robert James Watson, born 7th. February 1876 Highgate, Middlesex (i.e. London) He was always interested in the military and joined the Volunteers (reservists, for home defence only) in 1895: 2nd. Middlesex Volunteer Artillery. As the Boer War went on longer than expected he volunteered to go out to South Africa but had to join another unit to be able to travel abroard, the rather flamboyant and upmarket City of London Imperial Volunteers in 1900, which gave him the Freedom of the City. He was in their Mounted Infantry. After several months in South Africa chasing Boers he had to return home with enteric fever. By the time he had recovered the C.I.V. no longer existed so he joined the 24 Batt. Imperial Yeomanry - the Metrolpolitan Mounted Rifles (now known as the Westminster Dragoons and recently active in the Gulf), and went back to S.A. in 1901 where he remained to the end of the Boer War. After that he moved to India (Calcutta) where he joined the 2nd. Battalion (Presidency) Calcutta Volunteer Rifles and where he married an Amy Jewel. Not much known of this family. He also rose high in the Indian Civil Service. Around 1918 while on 1 year military leave he was for a time vice-consul in San Francisco (would like to find out more about that) and also applied to the U.S. War Dept. (Washington) for temporary military attachment, and for which I have his C.V. which makes for interesting reading. He returned to India about March 1919 living in Calcutta still in the Civil Service but later manager of Grand Hotel there. He and his wife were also somehow involved in the Remington typewriter company and also importing American cars (Cryslers I think) to India. They eventually retired back to the UK Merseyside around 1930s. His (still) unconfirmed parents where George Watson b. abt. 1852 Barking, Hartfordshire, and his wife Jane Ambrose Cory b. abt. 1855 in Islington, Middlesex. 1881 census living at 14 Cumberland St. Islington. If you have not already used them, two excellent sites for London family research are: London-L@rootsweb.com and Middlesex_County_UK-L@rootsweb.com and there are plenty of Watsons there, but be warned: expect a mass of messages. 2. Thank you Chris! This will keep me busy. I will be visiting friends outside of London, and then go up to Scotland for a look. There are a branch of the Watson clan in the U.S. with relationships to President James Buchanan. While visiting up in Donegal, Ireland I was told I had relatives up there, but that was over 30 years before I got into this. That line goes to Donegal and then Scotland. The lineage is almost overwhelming through Mary Stewart, Bruce Wallace, and into England and France. It is really Alexander Watson that I am after now. Thank you for you help! Ingrid G. Family lore says he died on his way home after being released from prison during the Civil War. He was starving, came upon a field a green corn, over ate and died. Rhoda went on to have Sarah A who married Peter (Tiny) Grubb, Amanda, born around 1868 and married Anderson Milburn on Jan. 12, 1885. She also had a daughter, Frances and I know nothing about her. I don't know who the father of these girls would be. Rhoda did go on to marry again, but the daughters were born before this marriage to Johnson Suit. 1. [Watson] Watson in the Calloway Co., KY Area
    2. Justin Richardson
    3. I am searching for the family of my 4th great grandmother-Nancy Watson Fields. She married in 1828 in Calloway (now Marshall) County to John Fields. Proof of her age was James Watson, because she she was 19 when she married. Also in Calloway Co., KY in 1840, a Mary Ann Watson married Ezekiel Beavers. Proof of Mary Ann's age was also James Watson. There was also a Lurany Watson in the area. The reason I believe that all these people could be related is: Nancy and Mary Ann were both in Calloway Co., KY at one time. Also, all three ladies, Lurany, Nancy, and Mary Ann, had the name Lurany connected to them. Of course, one was named Lurany, but both Nancy and Mary Ann had daughters named Lurany. If there is anyone out there that recognizes these names, PLEASE let me know. Dwight Beaver, if you are still subscribed to the list-PLEASE contact me. Thank you, Justin Richardson ===== Justin L.
