About Polly: There are several dimutives for Mary. Mamie, Polly, Molly are extremely common. Just nicknames. When you see Polly, it may be a nickname for Mary, or it may be a given name. (Sally was nickname for Sarah, and became a common given name.) --Ed __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Perhaps there was more than one Mary and they nicknamed the other one Polly? With the Scots, they had a naming pattern, with the first son being named for the fathers father, the second for the mother's father etc. Their middle names were usually the maiden names of the mother and her family, then close friends. Most of them were called by their middle names instead of the first just to tell them apart. JO
I have noticed that almost every woman in the 1800s who was named Mary is nicknamed Polly. It doesn't matter where they lived or what. I am wondering if this is a common thing, or I'm just crazy. Does anyone else notice this besides me and have any idea why? Mindy L
Mindy, You are correct and many of them lived in Kentucky, Tennessee, Illinois and Missouri!!! Hi everyone, I am looking for information on a Watson family from Barrow-in-Furness, Lancashire, England. Charles Watson, born 1846 in England and died 5 February 1936 in New York. Charles married Mary Ann Stokesy 29 January 1868 in England. They had six children, I think four of which immigrated to the United States along with Charles and Mary Ann, but not all at the same time. Their children's names were James, Emily, Elizabeth, Jane, Ada, and Rhoda. James married Ella Jane Sauer in New York on 18 June 1910. I have a lot of information on Charles and Mary Ann's children, just not much about them. Who their parents were, etc. Any information on anyone in this family is greatly appreciated and I would be happy to share everything I have on the rest of the family. Thank you, Jennifer Eklund
I learned today that my g-uncles mother was from Jackson County. Her name was Anna BLEAKLEY. She married Robert T. KENNEDY who was born in Ohio. They had 2 sons that I'm aware of, Ralph B. Kennedy born August 8, 1890 and Roy Kennedy who in 1945 was living in Central City, Iowa. Ralph married Laura WATSON from Maquoketa, daughter of Frank and Jennie ROBERTS WATSON. Ralph died January 3, 1945 in Cedar Rapids, Linn County Iowa. I was wondering if anyone knew of the Bleakley family. Thanks. Donna

Hi, Have my line back to Bucks (early 1700's). Perhaps we should compare notes and see if perhaps there may be a link somewhere. Have traced one line down through the generations but there are still lots of others that I have not explored. Chris, at least one of my branches was in your parts. Regards Stew WATSON King Country - New Zealand

My Great-great grandfather was John Watson. I know little about him and would like to learn more. He was married to Mary Mahoney in New England and the father of my great grandmother, Mary Elizabeth Frances Watson born in 1836 and married Emanuel Bushnell in 1855.
