Hello! The following obit was in my family bible. J. L. Watson is the brother of my great grandfather William Russell Watson. His family must have sent the obit to our family in Tennessee when he died. Thought someone might make a connection. Pertinent Info taken from family bible: James L. (probably Lemuel) Watson b. Nov. 1, 1846 Hardin County, TN d. Dec. 25, 1917 Hamlin, Jonas County, TX married to M. M. Akin on September 12, 1869 Jane Watson Helvering Obituary from unknown newspaper J. L. Watson Hamlin, Jonas County, Texas On Christmas night at seven o'clock Grandpa Watson answered the call of death and passed over the river to join the hosts of other old Ex-confederates who long ago heard the great command. The deceased was born in Hardin County, Tennessee, on Nov. 1, 1846, making his age at death a few weeks past 72 years. He came to Texas in 1870 and first settled in Titus county. For about 28 years he had been engaged in the hotel business. Before coming to Hamlin some seven years ago he was in the same business in Chillicothe. Those of his immediate family to mourn his death, is a wife and three children, two sons, John S. Watson, of Globe, AZ and Sam J. Watson, Chillicothe, and Mrs. Louise Lee of Hamlin. The deceased was a soldier in the war of 1860-64 and often wore his dress uniform of the Southern Gray, in which he was laid to rest. The funeral was held at the Methodist church, of which he was a member. The pall bearers were six of our lately drilled soldiers namely, W. E. Routh, Marcy Allen, F. J. Brown, George H. McGee, John Walt, and W. L. Fletcher. These young men marched by the hearse as a guard of honor to the old soldier of a generation ago. After the funeral services, befitting the life of a quite good citizen, the body was laid to rest in the East Cemetery. Like many other good old men his familiar presence on our streets will be missed, but the three score and ten years for him had been more than passed, which was a testimony of energy upright life and fortitude. ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com

Hi all -- I have just gotten with you and have been reading the queries for the past few days. My WATSON family comes from Old Somerset Co. and Wicomico Co. MD. I am at a brick wall with my great- grandfather WILLIAM S. WATSON even though there were Watson's in that area of MD from the early 1600's William is listed in the 1870 Census of Wicomico Co as living in the Tyaskin Election District. William Watson 45 Nancy R. 35 Sarah V. 19 Georgia 15 Margaret 12 Mary C. 6 William H. 16 James S. 10 (my grandfather, James Squire Watson) John W. 9 Thomas A. 4 This Watson family is not listed in that area in the 1860 Census. I wonder if anyone recognizes any of these Watsons? One thing that fascinates me is the people's ages in the list. Could it be two families of children? William S. second marriage? Another family taken in because they were orphaned? Or maybe I'm reading things that aren't there and it's all one family from one marriage. Any help would be appreciated. Jeanne Scott

Thanks Jean for checking for me :) Carol
Hi Carol, My William Watson was born in Preston, Lancs, England in 1828. I believe his father's name was George, his mother's Mary. William married in Cockerham, Lancs, England in 1852. He brought his family to America in 1866, settling in the Missouri Valley for about 20 years before coming west to Washington State. I know nothing further back than George, born about 1802. None of this line went to VA. Thanks for writing, and Good luck on your research. ----- Original Message ----- From: Carol Meier To: Jean C Gobel Cc: [email protected] Sent: Wednesday, 03 November, 1999 2:39 AM Subject: Re: WATSONs of Texas 1800's Hi Jean, I'm looking for a Benjamin, William or Thomas Watson from England or Scotland, but around the time period of 1770-1800. Re: Marilou Watson Jacob's query of 29 Oct, list #205, 29 Oct 1999: "Jesse Watson, ggrandfather, married Susan (or Susanne) McEuin about 1843 in VA and moved to Carroll Cty, TN about 1850. I have death information on both in Gibson Cty, TN about 1875. Family stories say Jesse owned land in or near Petersburg, VA in the 1840s." There is a Thomas D. Watson, b c1791, living in 1830 Prince George Co. VA & 1840-1860 Petersburg VA. In 1850 he is living alone. In 1870 he is not there, but there is a deed in Bastrop Co. TX dated 1883 that names three boys, William Henry Watson, Thomas D. Watson & James B. Watson, as heirs of a Thomas D. Watson, deceased, "late of Petersburg VA." In the 1871 tax rolls of Bastrop co. there are four boys owning land with the notation "J.D. Watson, agent": William Henry, Thomas D., John T. Jr., & James B. I have not been able to turn up anything further on the elder Thomas D. to determine how he is related to the boys. There is no probate record for him in Bastrop co. They are the sons of a John T. Watson b Sept 1812 (or 1814) VA, d 1902 in Bastrop Co. TX. He came to TX from TN in 1849 (missing from 1850 census). His son Thomas D. was b in Gibson Co. TN in Oct 1835. I have a mountain of info on this family. A descendant is planning a trip to Petersburg in January in hopes of turning up documents. I would appreciate knowing anything about this family. Stew, I have a William J. Watson born Feb. 1869, married June 27, 1892 Violetta Patten born March 1876. His father was Thomas Green Watson born March 12 1843, Thomas's father was Jeptha P. Watson born July 18, 1819 in Bath Co., Kentucky and we believe Jeptha's father was Thomas Watson, Thomas's father was William and William's father was Benjamin. Family tradition says Thomas's father William died and Thomas was orphaned and raised by his grandfather Benjamin. We also believe he was born in England. Thomas married (we think in Virginia) Susan O'Sullivan (could've been Sullivan) and they had 3 children we know of, Malinda V., Jeptha P. and Samuel Redd DeKalb Watson. My line of Watson's are know for naming their children after relatives. And they had large familes back then. So far for Jeptha's children (who are Thomas Green Watson's siblings), we have: Sarah A., William M., Thomas Green, Riley W., Abby Ellen, John Simp, Matilada V. and Armina J. I'm wondering if yur William James East Watson was Thomas Green Watson's brother? Keep up the search! Good Luck, Carol
