    1. [WAT] Dungarvan Museum News - The Fenian Rebellion
    2. William Whelan
    3. Hi to all. We have added two very interesting articles to the museum site www.dungarvanmuseum.org this week. Both cover the same subject matter. The articles deal with the trial of the Fenian crew of the Jacmel (Erins Hope) who landed at Helvic (outside Dungarvan) in an abortive attempt to stage a rebellion against British rule. A possible interesting postscript: At the moment we are researching whether Augustine E. Costello one of the leading (and most impressive) Fenians in the company is the same Augustine E. Costello who wrote Our Firemen: A History of the New York Fire Departments, Volunteer and Paid, from 1609 to 1887. This book went back into print last year in the wake of the 9/11 tragedy as a memorial to the fireman of NY. Both articles can be found at http://www.dungarvanmuseum.org/index.cgi?cat_id=2 If you have difficulty using the link click on exhibitions at the top of the home page and then click on historical articles. Apologies for some of the navigational problems on the site at the moment. We are in the middle of reorganising the site. We will tidy up these navigational glitches as soon as we can. If anyone has a historical /genealogical web site and they want to have a link between our site and theirs please get in touch. Yours Willie and Martin Whelan 1. Changing / Removing your email address for this mailing list ============================================== 1. New Website Articles ============================================== The first article is by Sylvester Murray and tells the story of the American Fenian landing at Helvic, near Dungarvan in 1867, it was first published in Decies No. 9, The Journal Of The Old Waterford Society, September 1978. The second article is called 'The Cruise Of The Jacknell' A reproduction of an article published by Fenian sympathisers in 1868. The article deals with the trial of the Fenian crew of the Jacmel (Erins Hope) who landed at Helvic in an abortive attempt to stage a rebellion against British rule. Both articles can be found at http://www.dungarvanmuseum.org/index.cgi?cat_id=2 If you have difficulty using the link click on exhibitions at the top of the home page and then click on historical articles. The crew of the ship were Irish Americans many of whom had served in the American Civil War. At the trial the men used an interesting defence against the charge of treason felony levelled against them. They stated that as citizens of a foreign country (America) they could not be guilty of treason to the Crown. ============================================== 2. Dungarvan Museum Shop ============================================== With the cooperation of Powers bookshop we have put up a selection of Local history books for sale on the site. The titles include 'The Waterford Rebels of 1849', 'A History of Dungarvan Town and District', 'Them Golden Fields I Trod', 'History of Waterford City and County', 'Walking the Holy Ground in Ardmore and Lismore' and 'Waterford People - A Biographical Dictionary'. We can accept personal cheques drawn on major banks, postal orders and International money orders. Unfortunately we cannot accept Credit Card payments. All proceeds from books sold on the site go towards the maintenance of Dungarvan Museum Society a non-profit organisation. We also have a special offer that allows you to make a considerable saving on the shipping costs if you order all six books available for sale on the site at the same time. http://www.dungarvanmuseum.org/index.cgi?cat_id=14 ============================================== 3. Dungarvan Museum Reproduction Postcards ============================================== To mark the launch of our summer exhibition 'Postcards Of County Waterford' featuring postcards from most of the major villages and towns of Waterford we have decided to publish the next in a series of limited edition postcards.
